The Year 6 Class
L. Warner
I have been the Year 6 teacher at All Saints for 4 years, and have enjoyed teaching the older children.
Mrs Baggott, who also works in Class 6, is invaluable, and always brings out the best in the children.
During Year 6 the children have to take their SATs tests and whilst we do work hard helping the children we always ensure their last year at primary school is memorable by providing an enriched curriculum. As well as going on a residential trip to Robinwood in the middle of the year, we also spend a day in Edale doing outdoor activities. We have also visited The Beatles Story in Liverpool and the Tate Art Gallery.
The learning in our class is more ‘research based’ as the children are encouraged to develop skills where they can find out for themselves; which is essential for their future learning in secondary school. This year I have introduced ‘thinking skills’ lessons where the children are encouraged to consider and discuss topical and relevant issues, and look for different ways to solve problems. This has allowed the children to understand that there is more than one way to approach a problem, and they should use more lateral thinking. I have high expectations of all the children in the class to work to the very best of their abilities, whatever level they may be at. Each day we have a ‘Try of the Day’ where the child who has tried something new, with the risk of failing, has been rewarded. We also have a weekly ‘circle time’ where the children give rewards to each other for achievements they have recognised.
We all aim high in Year 6 and have had some fantastic successes. When children leave All Saints they leave as good citizens, which is recognised by people in the local community as well as the school.
