Class 1 Public community Blog
  • Friday 24th July (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Hello Everyone!

We have reached the end of term....and what a strange term it has been!

Thank you so much for all the kind messages, cards and gifts that you have sent in for us this week; it was so kind of you all, it made us all feel quite emotional! We know that the children will love Year 2, and we can't wait to see them back at school in September. It's been a privilege to be their teachers this year.

I am sorry that I didn't get to see everyone at the Goodbye to Year 1 session. I would have loved to have seen everyone before the summer, but I sadly had no one to look after my own children - otherwise I would have been there to wish everyone a wonderful summer and the best of luck for Year 2!

Thank you for your support during this period of distance learning. Whilst we have tried to make sure that we have provided you with all the support you need, remote teaching is not something we have ever had to think about previously, it's not something you cover when you train to be a teacher, and it has been unknown territory for us all! We have been learning as we go and really appreciate your honest feedback, support and patience.

We hope you have a restful summer, free from the frustrations of home schooling while working from home. It has been hard for you all: you have been providing your child's education in the place of us for over 4 months now, you deserve a break!

On a personal note, and as parents ourselves, we understand the concerns and frustrations of home schooling. As parents, we've often felt like we're not doing enough, or that we might be expecting too much from our children when they have been reluctant to do "school" at "home" and when they miss their friends. Finding the balance as a parent has been incredibly hard. But, please be reassured: you have all done an absolutely incredible job. The children's happiness is what comes above everything else, and as this time draws to a close, we hope that you and your children have been able to enjoy some (if not all!) of it. I for one feel like I understand how my own children learn so much better now.

I will say it again....THANK YOU for being such a wonderful class. We will miss you all and wish you the very best for Year 2!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond

  • Friday 17th July (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Hello Everyone!

This week we have absolutely loved reading your memories from Year 1. Even with the long break from school, it's so good to see that you all had lots of lovely times in Year 1. The nativity, the trip to Staircase House, learning about The Great Fire of London, den building with our friends, the continents song!

And we just have to mention all of your amazing achievements in your learning too....I don't think I have EVER awarded so many Mathletics certificates! This year as a class you achieved 318 bronze, 48 silver and 8 gold certificates - wow! You are all superstars!

From your love of stories and reading, to the amazing progress everyone has made with their handwriting....you are incredible and should be so proud of all you have done this year!

This week in Mathletics Amelie, Harry, Brody and Jack all achieved bronze certificates! Well done!

Next week is the last week of term. We will continue to post activities and work next week, and if you would like us to send you any resources to use over the summer please do just let us know on Tapestry.

    Have a lovely, sunny, weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 10th July (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Hello Class 1

We hope that everyone is happy and looking forward to the end of term coming. The teachers have been having a busy week in school with the children in our bubbles, keeping in touch with you on Tapestry and preparing for the new school year. We hope that you are looking forward to Class 2 with Mrs Noble, but we also know that we are going to miss all of you so much!

This week on Mathletics Poppy and Jack achieved their Silver certificates. Well done Poppy and Jack! Bronze certificates go to Poppy, Oliver, Harry, Ralphie, Brody and Jack. Well done everyone!

You should by now have received a Ping from school telling you about the Mathletics challenge booklets that we are able to distribute electronically. I have attached them to a copy of this blog on Tapestry. I have attached both the Year 1 challenge and the Year 2 challenge, in case you would like to see what the difference is between the two and select which (if any) you would like to give to your child.

We hope you have a fabulous weekend, and we look forward to seeing the children again in school very soon.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 3rd July (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Happy Friday Class 1!

We hope you have had a good week.

Thank you to everyone who managed to record the Rainbow Song this week - it's going to look amazing when it is done and we hope everyone will enjoy watching it. Thank you as well to everyone who has continued to keep in touch with us via Tapestry; it really does help us as we begin to prepare for transition to Year 2 if we can see some recent work done by the children. Each week we try to make sure that we have kept in touch with every child in the class, and for this reason too, your communications via Tapestry really are appreciated.

This week, Eleanor, Ralphie Brody and Harry all achieved bronze certificates on Mathletics- well done!

Just as a reminder, Mrs Manning and myself would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that the learning ideas we post on Tapestry are meant to be ideas only, and are there to support our Class 1 families as much, or as little, as you need. There is no expectation from us that your child must complete every activity that we post. Please use the resources we post in a way that suits your family.

    Have a wonderful weekend

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond

  • Friday 26th June (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Hello Class 1

We hope you have a great week!

Have you been practicing your Rainbow Song? We can't wait to see your videos! Don't forget to send them in!

This week we have seen some wonderful seasons work! We hope you are enjoying having some time to reflect on what you have learned about the seasons during lockdown. We also hope that you are getting used to reading clocks and telling the time. We have seen that lots of you are using the Bitesize Daily and Oak Academy lessons to support you in your home learning; this is wonderful! Please do keep using whatever resources suit you to continue with learning, we are almost there now, just a few more weeks to go until the Summer Holidays! And, as always, if there is something that you need particular advice about, or if you would like to talk about the resources and support we are providing, please do send us a quick message on Tapestry - we are always happy to help in whatever way we can.

Now that everyone knows what teacher they are going to have next year, we are busy planning how to make sure that you have an oportunity to get to know your new teacher before term begins again in September - watch this space!

On Mathletics this week, Eleanor achieved a silver and a bronze certificate - well done Eleanor! Oliver, Harry, Ralphie and Jack achieved bronze certificates. Well done!!

Please keep sending us your messages and updates on Tapestry. We love receiving them and knowing that you are all happy and enjoying this special time at home.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 19th June (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Hello Everyone!

Well, what a shame it is about this terrible weather.....although the thunder and lightening was exciting! We hope everyone has been enjoying seeing a little more of their friends and family, while social distancing, as the lockdown restrictions are lifted slightly.

It has been great to have some more of teh Year 1 children in this week in our Key Worker bubble, although we are still very sad that we don't get to see everyone yet.

This week on Tapestry we have seen some AMAZING coin work as the children have fully embraced this week's maths topic looking at money. We've seen some lovely pictures of people exploring nature and going for walks, and some beautiful art work too. We've been amazed by all the great work on Reading Eggs as well.

This week on Mathletics Zach and Harry both achieved silver certificates - well done!! Bronze Certificates on Mathletics go to Eleanor, Isaac, Harry, Ralphie and Zach. Well done everyone! If your child enjoys Mathletics, why not try Karate Cat on BBC Bitesize too? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjkphbk/articles/zf4sscw

Please do keep sharing your news and pictures of the work your child is doing on Tapestry. We have seen a sharp decrease in interraction on Tapestry over the last two weeks and we really do love to see what the children are up to as it gives us an invaluable guide when we are preparing home learning.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Hammond and Mrs Burney.

  • Friday 12th June (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Welcome back!

We hope that everyone had a great half term and has eased gently back into the routine of home learning with not too much difficulty. Mrs Manning and I are checking Tapestry daily and will continue to post worksheets and learning ideas, and video clips, on there going forward.

Going forward, you may find that we are available less on Tapestry, and it may take us a little bit longer to respond to your posts. We will be focussing our input on specific days (Tuesdays for Mrs Mylrea and Wednesdays for Mrs Manning), as we will be on-site in school more going forward. However, we will still be checking Tapestry and are still committed to ensuring that we are available to support all the children in Class 1. We will continue to provide home learning for you to use with your children.

You will all have now seen the message from the school today about the return of Year 1. We are very sad that we won't be seeing you all, but we are looking forward to seeing the children's smiling faces and wonderful home learning on Tapestry, and can't wait until the time when we are all finally back in school with our All Saints' family.

Thank you to everyone who has posted updates about the children's learning this week. We have seen lots of use of the worksheets that we have been setting, which is really positive.

We are keeping our fingers crossed for the return of the sunshine next week, and we hope everyone has a lovely, restful weekend.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Hammond and Mrs Burney.

  • Friday 22nd May (Mrs E Mylrea)

We made it to half term! It's been a strange term so-far, but we have been absolutely overwhelmed by the amazing activities and learning that you are all doing at home, and also by the lovely messages of support that you have been sending us. Thank you so much.

As most families have (quite rightly!!!!) been making the most of the sun and have moved focus from inside learning to outside activities, we have decided not to share everyone's Celebration Thursday learning ideas this week as they are so unique to the outside space and resources that each family has. We have absolutely loved seeing so many happy smiling faces on Tapestry and lots of wonderful learning though, and were so pleased that we had a chance to speak to you all this week too.

We have lots of Mathletics achievements to celebrate this week! Jack earned Bronze, Silver and Gold this week - well done Jack! Eleanor and Cooper both earned Bronze and Silver! And, Poppy, George, Grace D, Harry, Ralphie, Zach and Brody all achieved Bronze certificates this week! Well done everyone!

Well done to everyone for your work on Reading Eggs too - you are all amazing!

We know that lots of you are using the worksheet resources that we have been posting on Tapestry too, and we want to make sure that everyone gets the praise they deserve, even if their focus wasn't on Mathletics or Reading Eggs. There is an editable certificate in the documents tab for you to use if you would like to reward your child for anything special that they have achieved this week.

Although we are all at home, with very little change of scenery at the moment, the children really do know the difference between home-for-school, and home-for-the-holidays, and we hope that everyone finds a way to enjoy the next two weeks half term with a break to the home-school routine. If you feel like your child has lost some of their enthusiasm for learning this week, please don't feel despondent; we are at the end of a long half term, all the children are ready for a break, and you are not alone.

If you do choose to continue with home learning to maintain some routine through lockdown, we hope that the resources we have posted and signposted you to on Tapestry continue to be helpful.

Have a wonderful two week break,

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 15th May (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Hello Everyone!

We hope everyone is keeping well and enjoying the good weather. Thank you to everyone for keeping in touch with us during this strange time, it really does mean so much to us when we get to share your lockdown learning and fun experiences, even in a small way by going on Tapestry. Mrs Hammond and Mrs Burney are loving all the messages on DB Primary too, thank you so much!

You should all have received a Ping this week containing a questionnaire about how you feel about the school potentially reopening for a small proportion of children at the start of June, and a phased return thereafter. If you haven’t yet responded, please do make time to do this; even if you are undecided about some of the questions we are asking, that feedback in itself is really valuable as we try to plan as much as we can for the weeks and months ahead.

From Mrs Manning’s time capsule challenge, to videos of you all reading, to seeing those Mathletics scores rise every day, to sharing your Celebration Thursday successes – we have loved seeing all of your updates this week!

So, our Celebration Thursday Hall of Fame this week includes:

Isaac and his Pokemon inspired writing

Cooper and his AMAZING maths and super woodwork

Jamie’s awesome spelling and wonderful handwriting

    Zach’s spider fact file

Amelie’s science and tally chart for recording trees and plants in our local area

Lois’ marvellous maths sheets, fraction cupcakes and growing plants

Robyn’s super White Rose Maths and family facts about herself

Harry’s family topic on dinosaurs and acrostic poem

    Eliza’s beautiful bake-off writing

Oliver’s amazing reading, which is sister loves

Brody’s perfect day plan for after the lockdown

Eleanor’s diary of her no-screen Saturday

George’s Reading Eggs and Mathletics success, and his puppet show

    Jack’s hilarious poem

    Poppy’s time capsule work

    Gabriel’s Harry Potter work.

Wow!!! How amazing! By sharing these celebrations, we are helping each other to see what activities have proved popular with the children. I for one will be stealing a few of these ideas to try with my own children!

I’m sorry if I’ve missed anyone out…I know you are ALL doing an absolutely incredible job of learning at home, and whether you managed to send something to us for Celebration Thursday or not, we want to let you know how wonderful we think you ALL are for carrying on your learning at home. If we have missed anyone, we can correct the list, so please do let us know.

We have some Mathletics successes to celebrate too! Poppy, George, Eleanor, Oliver, Harry, Ralphie, Zach, Brody and Jack all earned Bronze certificates (please remember that points run Sunday to Sunday, so these certificates will relate to last week’s points). On Live Mathletics we have seen lots of really high scores this week: Poppy, Isaac, Brody and Jack – well done for achieving over 100 points! We know that more and more children are favouring worksheets and written maths at the moment, so we want to celebrate that as well. If your child would like a certificate for the amazing work that they are doing which isn’t on Mathletics, you can download an editable certificate from the documents tab on Tapestry to print off for them.

We have so much to celebrate, but we also know that this is a very difficult and strange time for a lot of our families. Please keep in touch with us and let us know if there is anything we can do to help support you and your child’s learning in any way.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond

  • Friday 8th May (Mrs E Mylrea)

Hello everyone, we hope that you are staying safe and well.

Well done everyone for all your wonderful work home schooling this week! We have been absolutely delighted to see your posts on Tapestry. This Celebration Thursday we saw:

Isaac's amazing home made pizza with written instructions
Hallie, Calla and Eliza working super hard on their maths sheets
Zach wrote some great book reviews and a Butterfly life cycle
Amelie wrote a very creative Pobble-inspired story
Jack wrote a beautiful letter to his grandparents
Cooper shared his fabulous spelling story with us
Poppy read us a gorgeous story
Harry is looking after some caterpillars and is writing a diary about it
Eleanor has been researching VE Day and wrote a lovely piece about it
Lois investigated fractions and made some beautiful cards
Robyn has been brushing up on her geography and impressed her family in a quiz
Oliver wrote a Jack and the Beanstalk story
Brody wrote a beautiful collection of memories for his family time capsule
George read to us and sent us his wonderful spelling test score.

Harry received his GOLD Mathletics certificate this week, and George achieved his SILVER. Well done George and Harry! Eleanor, Grace D, Harry, Brody and Jack all achieved BRONZE this week. We also saw lots of really high scores on Live Play, which is AMAZING! Well done everyone!

We hope we haven't missed anyone from our celebrations this week! Well done to everyone who took part, we appreciate that it isn't always easy, especially when you are working full time and have other children to look after as well. Hopefully, by sharing our celebrations we can be sharing ideas for successful activities to do at home, and motivating the children to do an extra special piece of work that they know will be shared (motivation certainly seems to be the hardest thing to muster with a lot of children at the moment - it is certainly our exprience with our own little people......home learning is no easier when you are a teacher, believe us!). It is all worth it in the end, when you can see the pride on your child's face when they have learned something new, enjoyed an investigation, or produced a piece of work that they can celebrate with their grown ups. You are all doing an amazing job.

If you didn't manage to share a Celebration Thursday post with us this week, please don't worry - we will do the same next week. Please keep sharing with us, it really does help us to prepare for the future when we can have an idea of what the children are doing at home. It is also wonderful to keep a dialogue going so that we know if and how we can support you more.

If you need any more worksheets or ideas beyond what we post daily on Tapestry, don't ever hesitate to ask. We are all missing the children more than you can imagine and will do anything we can to support your families as you continue to keep their education ticking over at home.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond

  • Friday 1st May (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Dear All Class 1 Families

We made it to the end of another week of home learning! I don't know about you.....but it is quite exhausting! I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has been engaging with us on DB Primary, and most importantly on Tapestry. Please do keep checking in. We post little tasks and ideas every day - all of which are optional of course. We are so impressed with what people have been doing to keep on top of home learning in a way that works for their family.

As well as Mathletics, DB Primary and Reading Eggs, here are some of the great things that Class 1 families have been sharing with Mrs Manning and myself on Tapestry:

    • We have seen that lots of you are using CGP workbooks and Abacus workbooks (both available to buy on line) - these are fabulous quality resources;
    • Use of BBC Bitesize (available free on line - please look out for the ones suitable to 5-7 year olds and Year 1);
    • Practical learning through games and exploration (particularly science, with lots of plant growing and nature investigations);
    • Writing to relatives and local residents of Marple;
    • Book reviews (whether written or by video clip);
    • Entering competitions;
    • Twinkl resources (free at the moment);
    • White Rose Maths Home Learning (free online) - another fabulous free resource.

You clearly all have lots of great ideas and are getting to grips with what works best for you.

If, however, as time goes on you are stuck for something and need more help, please let us know. And please do keep checking out our daily challenges posted on Tapestry. We have also added some maths worksheets on the 'Documents' part of Tapestry in a folder called Year 1 Summer Maths which are all geared towards what we would be doing in class.

Well done everyone for your work on Mathletics this week! The following children achieved certificates over the last two week (some more than one certificate, and some achieving silver!): Oliver, Isaac, Poppy, Zach, Eleanor, Jamie, Eliza, Harry, Brody, Jack, Cooper and Amelie.

I want to say a HUGE well done to Jack, Harry, Jamie, Eleanor and Poppy who all achieved over 100 points this week on Live Mathletics. WOW! Live Play is really challenging and I am SUPER PROUD of you all for getting such high scores! We have had a lot more people playing live this week - well done to everyone!!!

Well done everyone as well for your work on Reading Eggs. The feedback from everyone has been great and we are so glad that you are enjoying this resource.

Finally, you should have received a Ping today regarding 'Celebration Thursday'. Going forward, we hope that everyone in Class 1 will message myself and Mrs Manning on Tapestry to share the piece of work that you are most proud of that week. We will share our celebrations on here and on Tapestry. There is more information about this on Tapestry.

If, for any reason, you are struggling to log on to Tapestry and DB Primary, please email the Headteacher email account and your message will get back to us so that we can sort this out for you.

Have a wonderful weekend, and let's keep our fingers crossed for sun!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 24th April (Mrs E Mylrea)

Welcome to our Summer Term! We hope that you had a lovely Easter break despite the challenging times that we are all facing.

This week on Tapestry we have seen so many smiling, happy Year 1 faces, it has really been so wonderful to catch up with you again. If you haven't been on Tapestry in a while, please do log on; it is a fabulous way for us to keep in touch, but it is also another source of learning, and both myself and Mrs Manning post learning challenges and ideas on there daily.

You will hopefully have seen Mrs Noble's English learning task this week too on the All Saints' website! It is set to inspire all the inventors we have in our school. Please do check it out if you haven't already had a go. We are reading everyone's responses and contributions carefully and have loved seeing all the ideas that the All Saints' children have come up with.

Please do also check DB Primary. Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond have done a fabulous job this week of tidying up our account so that the Class 1 area is far more user friendly. Please check your DB emails when you are visiting DB Primary as you may have a little message from someone in our class!

Whilst there are lots of ways for us to keep in touch and to see how your learning is going in these hard times, we cannot wait for the time to come when we get to see you again in person. Please keep in touch, let us know how you are getting on via Tapestry and DB, and if we can help you at all with your home learning journey, know that we are always here to help.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond

  • Friday 3rd April (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Dear Class 1

We hope you have been having a lovely week at home! If we had been in school today, we would be just walking back from our Easter Service at church as I write. It is very sad to think that we have missed out on celebrating Easter together this year, but we mustn't forget what Easter means to our All Saints' Christian family: it is a time of new beginnings, hope and Jesus' message of love. We hope that you all have a wonderful Easter.

As parents ourselves, we know the value of routine, so it may be that you wish to keep going with some home learning in order to fill the many hours you have at home. However, we also know that although school has stopped, work for the grown-ups continues. We hope that you can take this time over the Easter holiday to get some much needed respite from the pressures of this strange situation we all find ourselves in.

The Class 1 team would like to give all the families at home a huge round of applause and many many thanks for all the messages and photos you've been sharing on Tapestry. You are doing a fabulous job. Even the smallest amount of one-to-one time with you, talking about learning or engaging through play, will make the hugest amount of difference to the children, so we applaud everything you are doing.

We also wanted to give a huge thank you to all of the parents and families who work in the emergency services, NHS, food delivery, postal service, care givers....the list goes on. You are continuing to work to support the massive effort to overcome the current crisis - words just can't describe how grateful we are to you.

We will be taking a break from Tapestry for the next two weeks, and we will not be contactable by email or DB Primary. If there is anything you need to discuss with school then please do email headteacher@allsaints-pri.stockport.sch.uk and Mrs Morton and Mrs Gaynor will respond ASAP.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Saturday 28th March (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Hello Class 1

We hope that you have had a good week! We have absolutely loved seeing your updates on Tapestry and hope that everyone will continue to put their learning experiences on there so that we can share in your successes!

We can see that a lot of you are still going on Mathletics and if we were in school this week I would be giving out certificates to a quarter of the class! Please do keep going on Mathletics, it's such a fabulous resource. I must make a special mention for one person in Class 1 who has earned 4000 points this week! Wow! And we would be giving another child their second GOLD certificate! We will certainly have to have a Mathletics awards ceremony when we get back to school, that is for sure!

Of course, you may prefer to practice maths on paper or using other resources, and that is great too! I have put some ideas on Tapestry this week to help with this. In fact, Mrs Manning and I have been posting ideas on Tapestry for all sorts of activities, and if you do need any support regarding activities to support learning at home, please do message us on Tapestry. We are always more than happy to help!

This week, would you like to write us a letter about your day? You could take a picture of your letter and 'post' it on Tapestry for us.

The most important thing at the moment is keeping happy, safe and positive in these very strange circumstances. So please make sure that you prioritise this over everything else, and feel no pressure from us. We will continue to share ideas, but that is all they are intended to be - helpful ideas that hopefully you will enjoy, will support the children's learning, and may buy you a few minutes peace while you are attempting to work from home!

Fingers crossed for more sun next week!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 20th March (Mrs E Mylrea)

    Well....what a week!

This week we have really focussed on having fun! You will see on Tapestry that we have had some lovely activities going on this week, and today the children came home with their rainbow paintings. The idea behind the rainbows is that when the children are out and about in Marple taking exercise (whilst observing responsible social distancing to keep themselves and other members of the comminuty safe!) they can look out for the rainbows in people's windows. I will have one in my window, and hopefully children from other schools will be doing this too!

Although we may not be in school with your children every day, we are still working on providing learning support to you at home. Please allow your child to log in to DB Primary regularly. We have set all sorts of activities on there, and will continue to set new activities. Please go on to Mathletics too; we will be updating the topics covered and the levels set over the next few days as well. Please keep checking Tapestry as well. Finally - look out for the Friday blog which will continue. Passwords have been sent out again this week and should also be stuck in the front of reading records.

There is a function within DB Primary whereby the children can send us emails. We will check these as often as we can, and will endeavour to respond! Please be patient with us, though, while we adjust to this challenging time.

    Stay safe,

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 13th March (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been continuing with our work inspired by Jack and the Beanstalk. The children's creativity is really shining through with wonderful writing and artwork. On Tuesday we swapped classes with Mrs Noble and did sone super science. Well done class 1!

We had our 'Forgiveness' assembly in collective worship on Friday. The school were treated to our telling of 'Pip and Posy and the Scary Monster', and Oliver even dressed up as a monster for us! We used the story to explore the idea that our friends can sometimes upset us by making bad choices, but that we need to try to forgive people when they are sorry. We thought about the story of Zacchaeus the tax collector and how Jesus showed love to him despite everyone telling him not to.

In maths this week we have been using the greater than and less than symbols to compare numbers within 50. Next week we will return our focus to counting in 2s.

In science we are learning about different plants and we were incredibly impressed by how many common garden flowers the children could identify and name! I have put a clip on Tapestry so that you can see what our classroom is like when the children are busy sharing their ideas and completing independent tasks. Whilst we have lots of quiet time for writing and focussing, the children also love to share their ideas and work together in busy tasks, especially in science.

Following on from our work on common flowers, each child has taken home some pictures of trees this weekend. As we cannot easily go on a tree hunt (sadly we don't have all the different trees on our field, although we have many of them) we have asked if the children could have a go at finding the trees on the sheet and identifying them while you are out and about this weekend. This is not homework, and is optional, but will be very helpful when we come to talk about trees next week. If you could send in some leaves from each tree too, that would really be the icing on the cake!

The children earned some choosing time on Friday afternoon, and chose word games, reading, puzzles, free writing and lego. The children were eager for us to share their lego and writing creations on Tapestry so please do check for updates on Tapestry! The children are becoming more and more independent and responsible in both their learning and the way that they look after our classroom. As soon as it is 'tidy up time' everyone springs into action to make our classroom sparkle. I was very proud of the children for playing so beautifully and working as a team to tidy up that I just had to put some clips of this on Tapestry too. Well done class 1!

    Have a lovely weekend

  • Friday 28th February (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we began our Fairytales topic. We are in the process of trasforming our classroom and will soon have our very own beanstalk! We have lots of lovely activities and opportunities for learning coming up this half term which we are sure that the children are going to love. Not least our trip to the church for a make-believe fairytale wedding!

This week Miss Bull returned to us as a 'mystery reader' and the children loved seeing her!

In maths this week we have been partitioning two digit numbers into 10s and 1s. We call them 'tens' and 'ones', and are furnishing the children with lots of visual representations and strategies to help them when we come to adding 2-digit numbers later this year and in Year 2. Using coins (10ps and 1ps) is a great way to practice this at home.

Thank you to everyone who changed their after school arrangements on Thursday so that the children could come to our Pupil Parliament cinema night. We raised £170 to spend on wet-play activities for the whole school. Sadly, there is little funding available for these kinds of things anymore, and your contributions are very gratefully received. The children really enjoyed socialising and having the run of the Year 1 and Reception classrooms - and there was quite a lot of popcorn consumed too!

We hope you have a lovely weekend

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 14th February (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we thought about how to stay safe online, as part of Safer Internet Day. We talked about how we should keep personal details about us, like our names and addresses, a secret and never share them online. If you would like more information for your children about staying safe online, the 'Safer Internet Day' website has lots of information, and the Cbeebies website has some very good, accessible, content on the subject too.

In maths this week we looked at how adding and subtracting are linked, and used whole/part diagrams and bar models to find missing numbers. We have given the children a short activity booklet based on this half term's learning to take home. It is not homework, and we don't expect the children to return it to school completed. It is just an exemplification of some of the visuals we've been using in school, so that the children can share with you the sort of maths that we have been doing. If the children would like to complete the booklets that is absolutely fine, but not at all compulsory.

We didn't have a chance to share the children's Show and Tell today, so will have extra time to share after half term. We hope everyone has a lovely break! The children are really ready for a rest, they have made such a wonderful start to 2020!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 7th February (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we had a truly fabulous trip to Staircase House. Well done Class 1 for making the most of this trip - you can see lots of lovely pictures on Tapestry!

We were visited on Tuesday by students who were in school to see our amazing artistic skills. The children showed off their creativity and produced some amazing Fire of London inspired paintings.

In maths this week we have been using the 'greater than' and 'less than' symbols (sometimes known as crocodile mouths). We have also been working on problem solving, giving children scenarios to read, and then solve using their subtraction skills. This is an example of one of the more tricky questions we might try to solve:

    • Susie wants to buy some lego. She has £12, but the lego costs £20. Does she have enough? How much more does she need?

As an extension of this, and if the children feel confident with it, we might extend the questionning and ask them a question such as this: if the lego is reduced by £11, will she have enough money? Would she get any change?

There are several steps to interpreting this question into an easily solve-able sum, so it can be very tricky! The children are getting really good at selecting and using the apparatus they need to help them in maths, and are becomming much more independent as a result.

Next week we will be looking at how addition and subtraction are linked.

Thank you to everyone for putting your show and tell pictures and videos on Tapestry, the children have loved sharing them this week!

This week we said goodbye to Miss Bull as she goes back to university to complete the final months of her degree. We wish her all the best, and hope that she comes back to visit, she has been such a valuable addition to our class and we will really miss her!

    Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Miss Bull, Mrs Hammond and Mrs Burney.

  • Friday 31st January (Mrs Manning)

This week in Year 1 the Great Fire of London has continued to inspire some wonderful writing! We used our neatest handwriting to write a Fire of London rhyme, and we used the 'so' conjunction in a piece of writing about how people escaped the fire. We then made fire pictures using collage.

In maths we have been solving maths problems by adding and working systematically to find all possibilities. We have started to look again at different strategies for subtraction and will continue to work on this next week when we will extend our learning to working on written problems that we can solve using subtraction. Please keep working on the children's1-more and 1-less knowledge at home this week if you find the time.

Thank you for posting your show and tell pictures and videos to Tapestry, the children absolutely loved sharing them today, and we loved seeing them! We learned about Lois' skills at Uno, Brody's trip to the Chinese New Year celebrations in Manchester, and we saw pictures of Rudi there with his family too! We also learned all about Burns' Night from Calla!

Please check Tapestry for updates and pictures from this week. We look forward to seeing everyone next week, and to our amazing trip on Monday! Next week will be Miss Bull's last week in Class1 and we will be very sad to see her go; I'm sure you'll all agree that she has been a fabulous addition to our class and we will be wishing her all the very best as she goes into the final months of her teacher training.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney, Mrs Hammond and Miss Bull.

  • Friday 24th January (Mrs Manning)

This week in Year 1 we had an exciting morning swapping classrooms with Year 2. The children did some work with Mrs Noble, involving dance and literacy linked to the traditional tale of The Firebird. The children were absolutely wonderful for Mrs Noble and produced some spectacular writing. Well done Year 1!

In maths we have been practicing jumping to the next 10 before adding two numbers. For example, instead of counting on in ones from 7 to solve 7 + 4, we used our bonds to make 10 and then add 1 more. Now that the children are really getting to grips with their bonds to 10 (and even 20!) we are exploring ways to use them. If you wish to support what we are doing at school, we would recommend practicing working out one more and one less than numbers to 100 (particularly looking at one more and one less than multiples of 10, for example: 49, 50, 51).

We took some time in class today to celebrate all the work the children have been doing on Mathletics. The children were extremely proud of their scores, and cheered-on their friends who were on their way to reaching 1000 points this week. Well done everyone!

Please check Tapestry for further updates from this week and for a note about Show and Tell. The children love sharing their news in Show and Tell on Fridays! Going forward we will share news through Tapestry and the children will have a chance to share their Tapestry photos, videos or notes as Show and Tell on Friday afternoons. This will give the children more time to share their news, and will mean that their news can be better linked to events, achievements and celebrations that are taking place at home.

In Celebration Assembly this week, our 'star writer' was awarded to Harry. Well done Harry!

    Have a wonderful weekend

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney, Mrs Hammond and Miss Bull.

  • Friday 17th January (Mrs Manning)

Thank you to everyone who came to see us at the Parents' evenings this week. We really enjoyed meeting you all. We think you'll agree that the children have made a fabulous start to Year 1 and are all working really hard. We hope you have a chance this weekend to relax and celebrate all the good things that we were able to share with you this week.

Going forward, we will be rewarding the children with merits (and the usual certificates) for going on Mathletics, as it will form part of the homework. Please see the note that we have put into your child's bag this week regarding Mathletics. The children love receiving their certificates in Assembly on a Friday. Mathletics is a fabulous resource that the school has invested in for the children, and over the years we have seen how much it benefits the children's confidence and accuracy. It really is a great tool and we hope that everyone will see the benefit of using it. However, if you do not feel that Mathletics is the best choice for your child, please come and speak to Mrs Mylrea so that we can explore whether there is another way to make sure that your child is given credit in school for the maths that they are doing at home instead.

Please do keep checking Tapestry as well. We try to post pictures and updates each week so that you can see what the children have been getting up to in class. We do also check Tapestry for messages from you regarding the children's learning.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney, Mrs Hammond and Miss Bull

  • Friday 10th January (Mrs Manning)

    Happy New Year!

Welcome back, we hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas break. The children have hit the ground running and have loved getting started on our new topic 'Fire Fire!' We used adjectives to describe fire in our writing, and we also composed fire questions. We followed instructions to make a hand print fire painting and used instruments to recreate the sounds that fires make.

In maths we have been using our number facts to add and this is something we will continue to do over the coming weeks as we work on our strategies for problem solving.

Thank you to so many of you who have responded in record time to our letter about our trip to Staircase House! We can't wait! This is a trip that the children always enjoy and we make it extra special with the activities we arrange for the children while they are there. If you have any questions about the trip please do let us know. In particular, we will clarify the position regarding rusable water bottles for the packed lunches in next week's blog.

We are really looking forward to meeting with parents next week at our two parents' evenings. If you are unsure about the time of your appointment please come and speak to us on Monday and we will be able to check for you.

Going forward, the children in class 1 will be set Mathletics as homework. Mathletics login details were handed out in September, but we realise that some children may not have been accessing the website so-far this year, so we will hand out further copies on parents' evening. If your child is used to going on mathletics already, we would appreicate your feedback. We have recently assigned tasks to the children's accounts. These tasks are specifically related to the work we are doing in class. If you feel that these activities, or indeed the level of challenge on mathletics generally, are too difficult for your child to access on their own, or that your child would like more of a challenge, please do let us know and we can tailor your child's account accordingly.

    Have a wonderful weekend

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Miss Bull, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 20th December (Mrs Manning)

Well done Class 1 for a wonderful first term! You have been fantastic and we have loved getting to know you. We are looking forward to all the exciting times ahead in the Spring term.

Thank you for all the thoughtful and generous gifts that we have received from the children this Christmas. It is so kind of you and we really appreciate all the kind wishes you have sent us.

This week the children made some Christmas tree paintings and hand-print calendars showing the four seasons represented in one tree. The children really enjoyed making these gifts for you and we hope that you like them.

Have a lovely, relaxing Christmas, and we look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney, Mrs Hammond and Miss Bull.

  • Friday 13th December (Mrs Manning)

Well done Class 1 for a truly AMAZING nativity! You are all superstars! We expect that the children will be very tired tonight after such a late night last night. Lots of lovely Christmas relaxation will be in order! Thank you to everyone for supporting the children by coming to watch, helping to walk up to the the church for rehearsals and performances, donating money in our collection and giving the children so much encouragement and confidence.

Today we celebrated achieving our targets with our ice cream party. Well done everyone! There will be photos on Tapestry soon.

In maths we have been adding 10 and 1s to make 'teen' numbers, and we even had a go at adding 10s together. This gets much easier when we can confidently count in 10s, so if you want to practice your maths at home why not try counting money in 10p coins?

We have lots of lovely activities planned for next week as it is our last week before the Christmas holidays. Have a wonderful weekend, and we will see you on Monday!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney, Mrs Hammond and Miss Bull.

  • Friday 6th December (Mrs Manning)

We hope everyone had a great time at the Christmas fair last weekend. Thank you for all your continued support, raising money with our PTA. And thank you to everyone in Class 1 who is involved with the PTA too!

Next week we will have our nativity performances on Thursday. We will also be walking to the church for dress reshearsals (and a performance for the rest of the school) on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thank you to everyone who has already offered to help walk the children up to the church with us next week, we really do appreciate it! The children are doing such a wonderful job with the nativity and we know that they will enjoy performing it for you next week! In addition to learning dances and songs, there are so many other skills the the children need to develop when performing the nativity: listening for cues, working as a team, following instructions, performing with confidence and having patience. Class 1 have done an truly wonderful job this week in our  rehearsals with Class 2, and we are incredibly proud of them. A letter has gone out tonight regarding the arrangements for next week, but if you have any questions at all please do come and speak to us.

We have been looking at the properties of 2D shapes in maths this week. We have been using the words "sides", "straight", "curved", "equal length" and "vertices" to describe a number of different shapes. Next week we will continue to find out about subtraction using different tools to help us, and will try to solve problems for subtraction using coins as well.

    Have a lovely weekend

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney, Mrs Hammond and Miss Bull

  • Friday 29th December (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been reflecting on how we can show kindness at Christmas. We even worked this into our literacy by writing kind Christmas messages to our sponsored child, and to the elderly. Well done Class 1!

In maths we have been focussing on subtraction. We have been counting backwards on a number line and will continue to practice subtraction, involving problem solving and using coins, next week.

Things are getting very festive in Class 1! We made some lovely tree decorations on Friday using the bottle tops recycling that everyone kindly brought in. In R.E. we have been thinking about the gifts offered to baby Jesus in the Nativity story, and how we can even think of Jesus himself as a gift at Christmas.

We hope everyone enjoyed the Christmas Fair on Saturday. Please keep bringing in the children's nativity costumes. We will be having our first dress rehearsal soon.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney, Mrs Hammond and Miss Bull.

  • Friday 22nd November (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have taken our learning about the British Isles to Scotland! We have designed our own tartan, and have learned all about St Andrew. Well done Class 1!

We have been practicing our nativity songs and the children are doing so well with these. We hope you're enjoying hearing the children sing them at home, the teachers certainly have the tunes buzzing around their heads at the end of the school day!

In maths we have been using our knowledge of bonds and number to help us make different quantities with coins. It can be a shock when you realise for the first time that there is no 3p coin! If you have time this weekend have a go at making different amounts with 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins.

The children love sharing their achievements and things that they have made at home. We are going to start making time on a Friday afternoon to share these things that they have won, been awarded, got from a visit somewhere, or made. We do our best to keep things safe in the classroom, but accidents do happen, so please can we recommend that children only bring in things to 'show and tell' if they will not easily break. Things rarely go missing, but this happens too, so it is worth making sure that your children are aware of this before they bring anything into school to share with the class.

    Have a lovely weekend!

  • Friday 15th November (Mrs Manning)

In Class 1 this week we have been learning about important events in Irish history, including the potato famine and we also learned about The Titianic. We did some beautifu colour wash painting to decorate our writing about the Titanic. The children are really enjoying our Global Neighbours topic.

We have started learning our songs and dances for the nativity. It is going to be spectacular, watch this space for more updates!

Thank you to all the parents who came in to see us on Thursday afternoon - we love meeting you all and having a chance to talk about the children with you! They have all made a great start to Year 1. Thank you for all your support at home, it means so much to us.

Some parents asked for materials they can use to help boost their child's learning in maths. Mathletics is the place to start, but if your child wants to try something different as well, 'Hit the Button' is another great app. The Abacus maths books are our favourite workbooks for children to do if they prefer written activities, they are about £2 on Amazon and can be found elsewhere too. There are three for each year group and get progressively harder. You may find that your child enjoys maths games and physical activities instead, such as playing with blocks and coins, practicing times tables in the car, or solving little verbal maths problems with you. Either way, we recommend that you are guided by how much your child wants to do at home and the kinds of activities they enjoy. There is certainly no expectation that the children do more than going on Mathletics, and working on key skills such as learning their bonds or doubles, with you at home. We hope that this helps with some of the questions that came up but if you would like to discuss further please do come and speak to Mrs Mylrea.

This week has been anti-bulling week and we have talked about how we feel safe in school, and how we can be kind to each other. We have also talked about forgiving people who might hurt us by accident, and always trying our hardest to use kind hands. Well done Class 1!

The spellings for this week are on DB Primary.

We had a special visitor in assembly today and so we do not have a star reader or a star writer.

    Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney, Mrs Hammond and Miss Bull.

  • Monday 11th November (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been learning about Wales! The children even had a go at chopping vegetables to put into a Welsh soup! The children made their own information booklets about Cardiff. Well done Class 1.

In maths we have been using part/whole diagrams to help us split numbers into smaller parts for addition. Next week we will continue to use number patterns and our knowledge of number families to help us add, using 10 frames.

Today we had fun thinking about gifts and giving in the first lesson of our new RE topic on the Gift of Jesus. The children brought in teddies and we talked about why the teddies are important to us and who gave them to us. We decided that sometimes people give gifts to say thank you, sometimes to show their love and sometimes to mark a special occasion. Next week in RE we will think about the gifts that are given in the Christmas Story.

Some pictures from today have been put on to Tapestry.

We did not have a star writer or star mathematician today because of the Year 5 special assembly.

Remember that this week on Thursday afternoon there is a safer internet workshop at 1.15 for you to attend if you wish, followed by an informal drop in at 2.15 to meet your class teachers and see how your little star is getting on!

    Have a lovely weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney, Mrs Hammond and Miss Bull.

  • Friday 1st November (Mrs Manning)

Welcome back! We hope everyone enjoyed half term.

It's a long half term now until Christmas, and with all the coughs and colds going around we really do hope the children get a good chance to rest over the weekend. We will start rehearsals in the next few weeks for our nativity, so there is lots of excitement ahead!

The children had an exciting visit this week from a bee keeper. We learned all about the Queen and the Drones and the Workers. We even got to see a real bee hive full of busy bees, and we touched some real honeycomb.

In our topic work this week we have been learning about our Capital City - London. Try asking your children this weekend what they can tell you about London. Next week we will look at another UK city - Cardiff.

In maths we have started our new topic on addition. We did some 'counting on' using number lines. Next week we will start to look more closely at how to use number patterns to help us add without counting - like using our bonds, our 10s and our doubles. Well done Class 1!

This half term we will be joined by Miss Bull, a trainee teacher who is completing her final teaching placement with us. She will be teaching more as the term progresses and she would love everyone to say 'hello' if you see her in the playground. We are very lucky to have Miss Bull, who we know is going to be a real asset to our class this half term, and to the teaching profession when she graduates next year.

In our celebration assembly today Jack was given Mathematician of the week. Well done Jack!

    Have a lovely weekend.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Miss Bull, Mrs Hammond and Mrs Burney.

  • Friday 18th October (Mrs Manning)

Church Week! The children have had such a wonderful, enriching time getting to know our church community better and reflecting on God's Colourful Story. We sang, we danced and we engaged with such a wonderful variety of different activities, it was such a fabulous week. Year 1 highlights were: playing the colour ball game, winning paint powder for our class to use on the colour run; making rainbows with Skittles; when Church Mouse came to share exciting news with us; and the activities in the prayer tent. In fact, the children had so many suggestions when we asked them what their best bits were, that it is hard to recall them in the space that we have here!

In science, we have been thinking about our senses and how they help us to understand the world around us. We went on a senses walk to investigate the sounds, smells, tastes, sights and feel of our school.

Over half term, if you would like to support what we will be doing in maths when we return, you can have a go at learning doubles with your children (up to double 10). We will be working on these when we come back to school. There are some fantastic songs to help the children remember their doubles on YouTube.

We are writing this before the colour run as we will not be allowed back into the classroom once we are covered in paint! We hope everyone enjoys it and that you all have a fabulous half term. The children have worked so very hard this half term and really do deverve a nice break.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond

  • Friday 11th October (Mrs Manning)

The children have had another fabulous week in Year 1. We have thought about ways to save the world, by looking after our environment. We read 'George Saves the World by Lunchtime' and felt very inspired by the story. The children really enjoyed this book and it game sus some fabulous ideas for writing too.

We had some mindful time yesterday, and celebrated all the work we have done so-far this year. Well done everyone in Class 1, you really have had a fabulous start to the year!

In maths we have been counting in tens and ones, making teen numbers with ten frames and ones. We even had a go at counting bigger numbers, using multi-link blocks in towers of 'tens' and individual 'ones'. If you'd like to support your child's learning at home, please do keep on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. It's a skill that we will be using more and more next half term!

Today we have been doing some very active maths, learning how to play some of the Year 1 maths games, and practicing our skills for working together too. Some pictures will be on Tapestry so that you can see the sorts of activities the children have enjoyed today.

    Have a great weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 4th October (Mrs Manning)

Thank you for the donations for our cake sale. The children were very proud of the money they raised for Dementia UK, in support of the fabulous work that our Marple Neighbour, John, has been doing to brighten up Dan Bank.

The children also thought about their Global Neighbours further-a-field this week and wrote letters to our school sponsored child Nicolas, in Uganda. And while thinking about our neighbours all over the world, we continued our geography learning by finding out about the oceans of the world.

In maths we have been making 10, and solving problems making 10. We are nearly there with reciting our bonds to 10, and would encourage everyone to keep practicing. Bonds are really important as they help us to make connections in number and quantity without having to add up in ones every time.

Next week we will be making 'teen' numbers by adding ones to tens. You could try this at home with 10p coins and 1p coins.

Today in R.E. we have been reflecting on Creation and sang a creation song in class. Then we made some Creation wheels which (when turned with a split pin) reveal what happened on each of the 7 days of Creation. The children were desperate to take these home, but we really do need to keep them in school. Before the end of this term we will try to make a similar wheel in science to secure our learning about the seasons, and they will be able to take this one home - I promise! In the meantime we have put a few pictures onto Tapestry so that you can see what the children were doing.

Finally, it has come to our attention that the children aren't always celebrating their successes when they have achieved 'writer of the week' or 'mathematician of the week' in our Friday Celebration Assembly! So that you can share in the children's good news, we will post on here who as been given this honour each week. Our previous awards have gone to Jamie, Calla, Poppy and Isabelle. Well done everyone!

Well done Class 1 for another fabulous week! Mrs Manning and Mrs Mylrea will have different days to their usual working days next week, for one week only; Mrs Mylrea will be in school on Tuesday and Friday, and Mrs Manning will be in school on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

    Have a lovely weekend,

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond

  • Friday 27th September (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been thinking about a very kind local neighbour called John. John makes beautiful flower rings for Dan Bank, so that all the cyclists and motorists can enjoy them as they go past. We created our own pictures of flower rings inspired by John and we wrote a thank you letter to John.

In maths we have been finding 1 more and 1 less than numbers up to 100. If you get time over the weekend, try counting up to 100 with your child. Children often get stuck when they come to the bridge between one ten and another (for example realising that 40 comes after 39, 50 comes after 49, 60 comes after 59, etc). We call these bridges 'Transformer Numbers' (like Optimus Prime!) as they transform from one number at the front to another.

Please continue to count in 5s whenever you can as well. The children are finding that this is quite tricky and will find it a lot easier to master if they have a go at home a few times a week, perhaps on the walk to school, or when climbing the stairs to bed.

On Thursday it was our Languages Day and we had a wonderful visit from a Year 2 parent who taught us some polish and talked to us about Poland, and what it is like to learn English as a new language. Class 1 were wonderful at learning Polish and picked it up super-quick. We learned some great little phrases and the children came up with the most brilliant questions too. Well done Class 1. We were also visited by Mrs Henderson Wild for a fabulous afternoon of singing.

This afternoon in P.E. we had planned to keep working on our throwing, catching and balancing skills, but we had a class full of very tired children! So, instead, we decided to do some yoga and focus on our stretches, realxation and listening skills. The children were very relaxed and listened beautifully to the instructions. Well done Class 1! We also got to meet our new playground puppet-pal, Harold. Harold will be there for us when we need to talk about how we play in the playground and when we need to better understand how other people feel. Welcome to the class Harold!

Please do keep checking your child's bag for any letters and invitations.

Have a lovely weekend and a spledid time at the school disco to all those who are going!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond

  • Friday 20th September (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been reflecting on how we can be a good 'Global Neighbour' by helping our families. The children wrote sentences describing how they help their grown ups at home. We also learned about the continents of the world and worked in groups to learn more. You may have heard your children singing the continents song!

In maths we have been making 5. Next week we will be working on finding 1 more and 1 less by adding or taking away. We will start to learn how to use a number line and a 100 square. We will also continue our number bonds, learning all the ways to make 10 with the help of Farmer Pete and his number bonds song! If you would like to support your child's learning at home, try practicing counting to 100, and see if they are happy to count backwards too.

Thank you so much to everyone who came to our 'meet the teacher' evenning after school on Tuesday. We hope it was useful. If you were not able to make it, please do pop in and either Mrs Mylrea or Mrs Manning can arrange a convenient time to talk to you about what you can expect from the year ahead in Class 1. Sound Mats and 100 Squares were sent home on Wednesday to support some of the things we discussed at the meeting.

Norbert has had a lovely time visiting people's homes. We hope you have enjoyed having him! The children have really loved sharing their Norbert adventures with the class. Norbert will continue to be given out so please don't worry if your child hasn't had a go at bringing him home yet.

In Class 1 we don't check your children's bags for letters or return slips. The children will need to give any paperwork to the class teacher, Mrs Burney or Mrs Hammond as they come in in the morning. If your child has anything in their bag that you want them to pass on to an adult in school, please can you make your child aware? In the past, we have found that parents prefer to send their child into school holding any letters or slips in their hand, so that they don't forget about them in their bags. This gives the children a taste of responsibility, and allows the teaching staff to focus on all the lovely activities and learning oportunities we have planned for the children.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 13th September (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been thinking about where we live and who is close to us, as part of our Global Neighbours topic. We made maps of our route to school, and we wrote about our friends. Next week we will think about the wider world and will start to learn about the different continents of the world.

In maths we have been counting in 2s. We are really good at it! We talked about how to work out the next number if we get stuck. We started with counting our rocks and gems in groups of 2, and then we had a go at counting 2p coins and solving problems involving 2ps. If you would like to support your child's learning at home, see if they can count some 2p coins with you to see how much money they have, and practice counting to 20 in 2s. As a class we decided that it gets super-tricky after 14!

Next week in maths we will be exploring all the ways to make 5, learning how to record our maths in different ways and finding systematic ways to make sure we have found every possibility.

We are looking forward to seeing you next week at our 'Welcome to Year 1' meetings on Tuesday. If you will not be able to attend either meeting, please do let us know so that we can arrange an alternative time for you to come in and talk about what is going on in class 1 this year.

Finally, today the class was introduced to a very special new friend... Norbert the Number Dog! Norbert will be making his way around all of the families in Class 1. If your child brings Norbert home, your child may wish to play number games, count coins, learn shapes, bake a cake, go on Mathletics with him....he loves anything maths related! Then your child can record what he or she has done with Norbert in his diary. Children can write a sentence or two, draw a picture, stick in a photo, anything they wish, and we will share it together in school. All we ask is that you return Norbert to school after one night (or the weekend if your child gets him on a Friday) so that every child has a chance to take him home during the term.

    Have a lovely, sunny, weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Friday 6th September (Mrs Manning)

Welcome to Class1! We have absolutely loved getting to know the children this week. We hope the children like their new classroom and that they are beginning to feel more at home in their new surroundings. Thank you to everyone for bringing in a photo of your child with their family. We have put these up on display in our classroom and the children love pointing out to eachother who their special people are. If you haven't yet sent in a photo you can still bring one in next week; it doesn't need to be a glossy picture, or a very recent one, it could just be a paper copy of a picture if that is easier for you.

On Thursday the children created some beautiful family trees by first drawing around their hands and then writing the names of the people who are special to them inside the hand shapes. Then we experimented with painting a colour wash over the hands and painting a trunk onto the picture so the shape looked more like a tree. We were initially going to stick these into the children's books, but they were so beautiful we thought that you would want them at home, so they are in the children's bookbags tonight. Also...many of the children pleaded with us to let them take them home so how could we refuse!

In maths we have been practicing counting with accuracy. This is harder than in sounds! We used different techniques like moving gems and counters from one side of a line to the other as we counted, and  putting them into more manageable groups of 5 or 10. Then we had a go at counting objects on a sheet, making sure that we crossed out each one that we had counted. Next week we will start counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend! The children will be very tired from their first few days in Year 1 and we hope that they get a rest and time to relax!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Mrs Hammond.

  • Sunday 16th June (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

We have had a very busy week in class 1. The children had a lot of Show and Tell on Tapestry; it was great to see where the children had been on their holidays.

On Tuesday the children had an exciting visit from the Fire Brigade. The children wrote questions they wanted to ask the firefighters and then wrote fantastic thank you letters. This was linked to the topic of the Great Fire of London and the children had fun spraying the ship with water hose in the playground and  looked at the firefighter's clothing in the hall. The children loved the visitors!

The phonics screening test has been carried out and now we are waiting for the passing score to be announced next week. Last year the passing score was 32 out of 40, so hopefully it is the same this year. The children had a celebration party on Friday afternoon with lovely food, dancing and party games. Thank you for the food donations, that was very kind!

Can we say a special huge thank you to all the parents for your great support with your child's reading and phonics at home, you have been absolutely wonderful and a pleasure to work with! All children have improved so much since September, it makes us super proud!

Spellodrome and Mathletics: The school has decided to carry on only with Mathletics subscription for the next year. We have assigned the tasks on Mathletics as usual. Some of the assigned tasks are very hard, we are trying to get the children ready for Year 2, just try your best. Lots of children have started learning times tables and the children are asking us to practise in class; this is quite challenging and we are going to have a go! You can also do worksheets/online games at home, as long as your child works on the Year 1 maths targets, we are happy with that. If your child does extra worksheets/games, can you share on Tapestry so that we can give your child well deserved merits for their hard work.

Reading: Can you remember to ask comprehension questions when you read with your child? You could ask lots of 'why' questions to check your child's understanding. Please remember to sign the reading record 5 times a week to win the raffle!

SPAG: There are some grammar tasks set up on spag.com. Can you please complete the assigned tasks?

    Have a lovely weekend!

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Saturday 8th June (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a brilliant holiday and ready to get back to school on Monday, the 10th June 2019.

Next week is an important week for the Year 1 children because all Year 1 children will be tested on their phonics skills. The phonics screening test is upon us and it will be carried out between Wednesday 12th June and Friday 14th June. The test will be carried out by the class teacher Ms Collinge in a separate room without any distractions. The children will be offered breaks if needed. In the meantime, can you please complete the phonics revision booklets which were sent home just before the holidays. There are some practice tests on the Year 1 class page on the school website, too. Our advice is to keep reading and revise all sounds, particularly the split digraphs.

On Tuesday, 11th June, the year 1 children are expecting a visit from the Fire Brigade - very exciting! Big thanks to Jake's dad for making that happen!

On Friday, 14th June, the children are having a celebration party. Can you please send the party clothes in a separate bag? Any food donations are welcome.

    Thank you.

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 17th May (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

We have had another busy week in Class 1. First of all, I would like to mention how resilient the children were during this busy assessment week. The children tried their best and we are really proud of their positive attitude to learning. A huge well done to all the children, you should be proud of yourselves!

On Tuesday the children were very lucky to try Om's delicious egg fried rice. Taalia's dad and mum came into our class. First Om, who is a Thai chef,  told the childre how he cooked his scrumptious, healthy egg fried rice and then the children tasted it. The smell was divine and it tasted so yummy. Lots of children asked for seconds and emptied the huge pot. The children also tried home made spring rolls. Thank you so much to Taalia's dad and mum! It was a real treat! In the afternoon the children wanted to write thank you letters to Om, the Thai chef, and Macek, the Italian chef at Dolce Vita restaurant (visited last week).

In Literacy the children wrote a diary entry from the point of view of the baker's boy. The children enjoyed hot seating and role playing how the fire started at the bakery. The children made their own authentic paper (with tea bags!) to write on and wrote some fantastic baker's diary entries.

In Literacy the children used exciting vibrant adjectives (raging racing roaring fire) and vocabulary (thick smoke as fierce as the dragon's breath) and wrote amazing acrostic poems about the Great Fire of London. All children's work is displayed in the classroom to celebrate children's achievements. Congratulations to Felix, Kit, Elizabeth and Holly who recieved their special pencils for beautiful handwriting. The star writer is Felix this week who wrote a fantastic letter to the chef, using adjectives, question marks and gorgeous handwriting. Congratulations, Felix, you are a super star!

In Maths the children practised doubles, halves and quarters. The children are getting very confident remembering the number facts. Remember to go on Mathletics to receive a certificate at the celebration assembly! There is a Mathletics / Spellodrome lunchtime club on Thursdays which is run by Ms Collinge and Mrs Daniel, so your child could join the lunchtime club too. Special mention to Max and Felix who got full marks on their Maths assessment papers, absolutely incredible! Congratulations!

In science the children wrote their observations in the bean diaries. The children took home cress so they could use it in egg sandwiches. We love your tapestry photos and videos about plants! Special mention to Ben Taylor whose tapestry observations are exceptional and inspiring! Ben, we love your photos of you planting, playing scrabble, playing maths games, making fruit lollies; what an absolute super star!

In art the children made a collage of their version of "Jack and the Beanstalk". First the children posed as if they were climbing up the beanstalk. Then they drew the cottage and the story characters. Finally they made a beanstalk using green soft tissue and a fluffy cloud. It looks impressive!

It is an active week at school next week. The children will be doing sports activites every day, therefore the children are required to wear their PE kits every day, bring in their water bottles, wear a sun hat and apply sun cream. The sports day is on Thursday!

    Have a fantastic weekend!

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 10th May (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

We have had a short but busy week in Year 1.

On Tuesday the children enjoyed our  trip to Dolce Vita restaurant. The children loved the delicious pizzas and vanilla ice cream with strawberry and chocolate sauce. The children had lots of adult helpers on the day and even managed to do an activity about Italy before pizzas arrived. In the afternoon the children wrote about the trip which was fantastic to write about their experience. It was a great day!

The children have been working very hard on their phonics and reading this week. Some children had a chance to log on Spellodrome to play games at school. The children read at school quite a lot with the reading mentors. The class reading raffle was won by Maddie. Congratulations, Maddie, you are a fantastic reader!! You need to read with your child and sign the reading record 5 times a week to win the raffle.

Spellodrome/spag.com: Please can you remember to use Spellodrome at home so that your child gets a certificate at the Celebration Assembly on Friday? Can you also remember to go on www.spag.com, we have assigned activities for the children on grammar and punctuation.

In Maths the children have been practising halves and quarters. We have looked at time (o'clock, half past) as well, which is a big challenge. You could ask your child informally "If you have 8 strawberries, can you give me half? Can you give me a quarter ? What does one half mean? What does one quarter mean? " You could show your child that one quarter means sharing between 4 teddies/dollies, you could make it practical so that your child understands the concept. You could do it outside with flowers and leaves."Can you find me 12 leaves, 12 petals, 12 sticks. Can you show me half of 12? Can you show me one quarter of 12?"

The best Boy Mathematician this week is Edward with 6500 points and the best Girl Mathematician is Emily with 1590 points. They both got prizes! Congratulations!!!

Next week is the assessment week in school. The children will be doing reading tests and maths tests. We have assigned lots of revision tests on Mathletics and we have sent home some comprehension tasks to do. Can you remember to do the homework to earn merits?

    Have a nice weekend.

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 3rd May (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

We have had a great week on our Scrumdidlyumptious topic. We carried on learning about the Great Fire of London which has been a hit with the children. It was great to see so many children researching about the topic at home, bringing lovely drawings and writing sentences about Great Fire of London for Show and Tell.

In English the children retold the story "Jack and the beanstalk". We are very proud of the children's writing, they wrote in fantastic sentences with great punctuation and adjectives.

NEW!  It is the whole school approach to improve children's grammar skills and all teachers in all classes at All Saints' had to assign these activities. Mrs Noble's class have been practising grammar skills since the beginning of the spring term; year 1 have left it until the summer term. The year 1 children have been assigned grammar tasks on capital letters and sentence making on www.spag.com. The login is in the reading record. Please can you practise at home? Thank you.

In Maths we practised counting in tens and then we looked at problem solving activities with multiplication. We also looked at doubling numbers, halving shapes and numbers and worked out quarters of shapes and numbers. We have sent some activities home to practise telling time (o'clock and half past). We have assigned activities on Mathletics on halves, quarters and time to consolidate children's learning. We are going to choose the best Boy Mathematician and Girl Mathematician next week by looking at the highest score on Mathletics.

In Science we planed cress and wrote observations in the bean diaries. We also wrote our predictions about different conditions for growing plants: with sunlight and no water, without sunlight and with water, etc. We hid the pots with beans around the classroom to see what will happen. If you see some beautiful plants while you are out in the countryside, you could take a video or a photo, where your child can tell us something interesting. In Year 1 children need to ask scientific questions and describe the world around them. The children love looking at Tapestry.

In Phonics we carried on revising the sounds. The children practised ou/ay/ie/ire/ur. There are lots of photos on Tapestry for you to have a look. We have sent home two practice tests. The children can draw the sound buttons and read the words. It should take 4-9 minutes for one test. If you feel your child is struggling, you could practise on Spellodrome or other websites (www.topmarks.co.uk). There are some phonics resources you can download and print at home, you can find them on Class 1 blog, they were made by Mrs H Manning last year. Thank you once again to those children and parents who got Spellodrome certificates on Friday. We appreciate your hard work.

On Tuesday we are going to Dolce Vita restaurant. Big thanks to Julia's family who made that happen, it is a real treat. Thank you.

    Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 26th April (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

This week we have started out whole school topic Scrumdiddlyumptious! with learning about The Great Fire of London in 1666. The children learned how the fire started at the bakery on Pudding Lane in London. The children did some role play and hotseating activities (See tapestry).

In art the children made collages of the Tudor houses on fire. Also the children painted the smoke filled night sky.

In science the children planted some broad beans and wrote observations in the bean diaries.

In English the children wrote questions about the Tudor house on fire and also described what they saw, heard, felt and smelt pretending to be the baker's son or daughter.

Star Mathematicians: Teddy, Ella, Max and Mason are our star mathematicians. They all got 3 Mathletics certificates each, which means they practised maths skills even in the Easter holidays. Congratulations!!! A super effort!

Spellings: The new spellings have been sent home.

Homework: Spellodrome and Mathletics 1000 points and reading every day at home . Can you remember to sign the reading record?

Phonics screening check: The phonics test will be carried out in 6 weeks. Can you remember to practise sounds on Spellodrome and read every day?

Class photos: Thursday 2nd May .

    Sports Day: Thursday 23rd May.

    Have a great weekend.

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 29th March (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

We are almost there...one more week to go!

This week in Literacy the children carried on writing about the episodes from the movie clip "Taking Flight". The writing is becoming very descriptive and the children are using better adjectives (stripy) and verbs (exploded). During our Grammar lessons we recapped about the use of the suffix -ing and -ed and the children are becoming more confident during independent writing. We have sent home "Phase 5 Activity Booklet", the children wrote their names on it and started it in class, can you please finish the booklet at home?

In Maths the children counted on and back in ones, 2s and 5s from 100 orally. The children did some measuring work on length and width which was quite fun. One of the activities was to draw around your hand and measure the width/length of it using a ruler. Can you try this at home and show us on tapestry? We added some games on Mathletics, please can you let you child play some games? Next week we are planning to do the end of sping maths assessments.

In History we learned about the names of all the nine children of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. That was one of the children's questions at the start of the topic.

Next week we will be going to church to share some of our RE learning. We are going to sing a song "Spring Chicken" and show some of the children's art work.

On Friday there will be a cake sale in school to raise money for the projects organised by the Pupil Parliament, you could either bake some cakes or send a donation with your child, thank you. See more details on the newsletter.

    Have a lovely weekend.

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Saturday 23rd March (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

It has been another great week for Year 1! On Friday the children were visited by a number of 'significant' people who children across the school have been writing to during our topic this term.

First we had a visit from Matthew Walker, a Paralympic swimmer MBE, who showed the children his amazing medals.

Next we were visited by an inspirational young man from Stoke called Daniel Moseley who remained so positive after his accident. Finally we met a fantastic illustrator Tracy Mc Guiness-Kelly who actually came to All Saints as a child.

On Monday the children had a fantastic mad science school assembly where they were shown some amazing scientific experiments.

In Literacy the children have been writing a character description of the little boy from a movie clip "Taking Flight" and his Grandad, then they were describing the setting of the story. The children were challenged to use good adjectives (silver receeding hair, a broad nose, bushy silvery-grey eyebrows ). On Friday the children did an extended piece of independent writing about the beginning of the story.

In Maths the children practised using the signs <  > = comparing numbers and calculations. For example, 5+6>5+4, 17+3<16+1. The next step would be to work out the missing number. For example, 5+6  > 5+___ . Can you try this at home? Can you also go over the questions in the maths assessment booklets, we are going to repeat those soon to see how much the children have improved? I will assign some more maths work on Mathletics too because some parents were asking me. Thank you.

In History we talked about Queen Victoria getting married to Prince Albert and the children looked at the old paintings of the wedding. The children wrote sentences about the Queen's photograph on the wedding day.

In Religion we talked about Jesus being betrayed by Judas, the last supper and how Jesus was arrested by the Roman soldiers. We shared the Bible one between the two children and it was amazing to hear the children read from the children's Bible. Then we role played this part of the story and wrote sentences in the religion books. The 12 disciples were sitting down having their last supper with Jesus (Robin). Judas (Felix) left the room. Judas told the Roman soldiers he was going to show them which one was Jesus by kissing him on the cheek. The Roman soldiers (Regan and Rio) came marching and arrested Jesus. The disciples looked very scared. The children enjoyed the role play but said the story was very sad.

In Phonics we are learning sounds from the set 3 sounds in Read Write Inc.

ea(beads, tea) ue (blue, glue) aw (yawn, dawn) ur (a nurse with a purse) ir (a whirl with a twirl)  er (herbs, her, letter, dinner, supper) e-e (Eden, evening, Eve) a-e (snake, bake a cake)  i-e (nice smile)  u-e (huge brute)  ire (wire  hire  tired  fire)  ure (pure  sure assure lure picture creature )  ear (clear hear gear beard)  are (care fare share) ow (town brown)   ai  (snail  mail   tail  )  oi  (moist spoilt)   tion (celebration)  cious  (delicious)   tious (cautious)

These ones are very hard, especially to spell! You tube is fantastic! Just type any sound ( ea sound video) and lots of videos come up. We also revise set 1 and 2 sounds. I am going to share 2018 phonics screening practice test on tapestry, please can you make sure your child watches the video and reads the words outloud. Next week we are going to do another phonics test and tell you the score. There is only 2 months left until the actual test. Remember that your child needs to be aiming to read at band 7 at the end of year 1, so can you remember to read as much as you can and remember to sign the reading record? Please can you use Spellodrome more often too? Spellodrome is amazing! There is another boy in class 1 who has improved incredibly in the last 2 months  simply by playing games on Spellodrome and reading every night at home!  There were only 50 % of the class with certificates on Friday. Thank you so much for your continued support. We really appreciate it. Every little helps!

    NEW  NEW NEW

There is a new login in your reading records for www.spag.com . This is a school appoach and each class teacher will be setting grammar tasks. This will include tasks on full stops, capital letters, prefixes and suffixes. I haven't set any tasks yet. I will do perhaps in the holidays.

    Have a great weekend.

    Ms T Collinge

  • Saturday 9th March (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

Another busy week in Year 1. The World Book Day was fantastic and the children dazzled us with their wonderful costumes, speeches and book choices. Thank you for being creative and making such a great effort. The children had a wonderful day! The winner was Robin who was Mr Stink! All the photos and some videos are on tapestry.

Thank you to Stef Ensinger, our mystery reader, who took time off work to read to the children in English and Germany. What a treat!

In Maths we carried on working on fact families, writing addition and subtraction sentences. I haven't sent any maths worksheets this week, hoping for the children to go on Mathletics as much as they can, thank you.

In Science we looked at the signs of Spring. The children painted lovely pictures of the trees in cherry blossom. The pictures are all displayed in the classroom and look beautiful. We also looked at the scientific vocabulary such as observe (watch carefully), observing, question, answer, chart, record, describe etc. The children are getting more confident at explaining the meanings of the scientific words for KS1.

On Tuesday we made some pancakes and talked about giving something up for Lent. We used bossy verbs to write instructions how to make pancakes. Mason spotted the label on the tub "Pancakes love nutella" and that made everybody laugh. It was a good day!

Finally on Friday the children wore their lab coats and carried out a few experiments. The children had to think about the question for their experiment, then they wrote the prediction and finally had fun mixing vinegar and bicarbonate soda. It was a lovely fun day! We are keeping the lab coats in school.

    Have a great weekend!

    Ms Collinge

  • Sunday 3rd March (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

This week we have been started learning about our significant person-Queen Victoria. All children have written questions about what they would like to find out about Queen Victoria. We have started writing sentences in Queen Victoria's photo album, where the children will be writing captions for Queen Victoria's photographs. The children had fun dressing up as Victoria's children. They look serious on the photos pretending to be in Victorian times. (See tapestry for all photos.)

In Literacy we have been writing questions about Queen Victoria and learning about VERBS and adding the suffix -ed for the past tense as in looked, jumped, hunted etc. Writing verbs in the past correctly is one of the Year 1 expected objectives. Some children can already use -ed correctly in their writing. Please can you correct your child if you notice him/her writing 'jumpt' instead of 'jumped'? Can you model the correct verb tenses too? Some children say 'flied' instead of 'flew'.

In Maths we looked at adding three numbers , for example: 3 7 5 and the children had to spot bonds to 10 (3+7=10, 10+5=15, 3+7+5=15) to do their calculation. Therefore the knowledge of number bonds to 10 is crucial in Year 1. I have assigned games on Mathlectics as requested by parents. Also I have started sending home homework worksheets to suit various needs. Please can you make sure your child practises maths on Mathletics, does a worksheet, practises counting orally , does maths on www.topmarks.co.uk, etc. Every little helps!

In phonics we have been practising split diagraphs a-e (make a cake), i-e ( a nice smile), aw (yawn at dawn). The children seem confident in phonics lessons but find it hard to read words in books, so we need to practise more reading at home and playing more phonics games. We have started doing another phonics screening test and the results will be shown on tapestry shortly. I have tested three children so far! (See and respond on tapestry.)

Special mention to Robin who got 40 out of 40 on his practice phonics screening check on Thursday! What a super star reader!

If your child struggles with a particular sound, just simply log on Spellodrome and play phonics games. I found more fun games on www.ictgames.com , they loved playing DJ Cow game on it, can you have a go at home?

Thank you for doing the phonics homework and reading over the holidays , all children got merits if they brought the homework back. We have sent some more phonics homework to give children extra reading practice, do your best to complete it!

The forest school will start this Wednesday and Mrs Eva can't wait to meet the other half of year 1. Please make sure your child has waterproof clothing and suitable footwear (Wellies, walking boots).

Homework  reading club: This club was initially only for 4 weeks, I have decided to carry on the club to help the children with their reading. Can I ask for extra snacks please? Children can have a drink and a snack before we begin our session.

World Book Day: The children will need to come dressed in costumes for the World Book Day on Thursday 7th March. Mrs Noble wants the children to do a short presentation about their book or author. It's going to be a fab day!

John: We have told our year one children that John will be going to the hospital, that's all that has been mentioned. The children wrote him some lovely get well cards.

International Woman's Day: This is a special day for all girls and women in Russia and some parts of Europe, women get flowers, cards and chocolates. It's a combination of Valentine's Day and Mother's Day! So if the year one boys want to write the girls, mummies, grannies, teachers, headteachers lovely cards, that would be wonderful.

In Science we have been talking about the signs of spring. Can you encourage your child to look for the signs of spring when you are out? You can talk to your child about the weather changes, the changes in the day length, etc. Can your child bring a large white shirt /gown (Friday 8th March) so we could use it during our science experiments? You can decorate it with words related to science: experiment, observe, observing, sort, answer, question,  etc.

    Have a nice weekend!

    Ms Collinge

  • Sunday 10th February (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

Class 1 children have had a busy week preparing for our amazing  class assembly and doing the assessments.

The class assembly went exceptionally well. All children worked hard learning the lines and lyrics. The behaviour was exceptionally good and that made us very proud. The children sounded confident and said their lines loudly and clearly. Luckily the microphones worked on the day and it all went smoothly. We were told lots of positive complimentary comments from parents and staff at All Saints. Mrs Preece was saying how much the children have improved in terms of confidence and reading since they left Reception class.

Maths: We have carried out maths assessments but some children need a one-to-one approach so we will be going over some questions with them to find out exactly where they are in maths.

Also we will be testing the children on the following:

    1. Counting on to 100 and back from 100 to 0 from any given number. (So I might say "Can you count in ones from 56? from 65?)

    2. Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s on and back from 100. ("Can you count in 2s from 50? Can you count in 5s from 50?) Counting back is very tricky so it is a good idea to practise on the 100 square which was given to all parents in the welcome pack at the start of the year. You can simply practise with your child as they walk up and down the stairs, whilst driving in the car or while walking to school. There are some maths games on www.topmarks.co.uk (Chinese dragon game, caterpillar ordering, coconut ordering) where the children can sequence numbers in 2s, 5s and 10s. Also Mathletics is very good too and I will assign some games for the children.

We will post the results on tapestry so that you know how your child in doing at the moment. Don't worry if your child can't do it now, this is the end of year 1 expectation in maths. If your child has achieved the target with ease, try counting in the steps of three, this is an exceeding maths target (3, 6, 9).

Phonics: Can you please make sure your child practises on Spellodrome? It is important to revise the sounds because there are so many of them and the children get them mixed up. This week can you try to test your child on the set 1 and 2 sounds? We will be assessing the children too and hoping for the children to say the sounds speedily in the sets 1 and 2 securely now. Also you can use RWI flashcards with speed sounds and you could ask your child to make words with those sounds. In the holidays we will send a practice screening check for children to practise at home, we are looking at 25/40 now to be on target to pass the test in June.

Set 1 sounds: masdtinpgockukfelh  sh rjvyw th z ch qu x ng nk

Set 2 sounds: ay ee igh ow oo oo ar or air ir ou oy

Special mention to Ben T, Jake, Eden, Ella and Teddy this week who again have been writing sentences, stories at home and have done extra maths and geography activities. Thank you for your commitment! We give out merits for those who do extra work at home.

    Have a nice weekend.

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Saturday 2nd February (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

We have had another busy week, slightly interrupted by the bad weather and the heavy snowfall. It was fantastic to see lots of snow angels, snowmen and sledging on Tapestry.

Reading: The children were buzzing while changing books on Thursday and had many opportunities to read to the reading mentors during the week. "Can we read, please?" asked one of the children as we were changing the books in the library. I turned around and they all settled in the library reading their new books on the cushions, on the chairs and on the rug. It was lovely to see the children so keen to read! "Can I read first, please?" said a boy to the reading mentor on Friday afternoon. The reading mentor laughed, "Yes of course. You are all very keen!"

Writing: It was so hard to choose the best writer this week. The writing super star was Holly. Holly's writing was amazing, with great descriptive vocabulary and over 3 pages long. Well done, Holly!

Special mention to Jake, Ben T and Teddy who have been writing words, sentences and stories at home and shared on Tapestry. A super effort, boys!

Maths: We learned about using bonds to 10 to solve bonds to 20 problems. So if I know that 2+8=10, then I aslo know that 12+8=20. The challenge was 12+18=30. The children used practical equipment to show 9+1=10, then 19+1=20. Finally we moved on to the missing number 12+___=20. The children could use small counters, number lines or Numicon shapes to work out the calculations.

Assessment week: Next week is the assessment week. We are going to be testing children in phonics (practice screening check, Salford reading test, Read Write Inc assessment of the sounds learned), reading (How many words can you read in one minute?), writing (story writing, spelling of high frequency words) and maths (Arithmetic test, reasong and problem solving test).  Maths practice papers (arithmetic and reasoning) were sent home on Friday. The maths tests will be carried out towards the end of the week, giving us enough time to go over similar questions in the classroom and at home. It would be very helpful, if you could go through the maths questions with your child. Some of them are very challenging, e.g. __+2=10+5.

Spellodrome: Thank you for practising on Spellodrome. It has been a hit this week. I could tell the children's confidence shot up during the phonics lessons. Keep up the great work! This week we covered the following sounds 'oy' -a toy for a boy; 'ou'- shout it out; 'ir'-a whirl and a twirl. We keep going over and over these sounds because the children keep getting confused. They need to say the sounds speedily, without hesitation. All children must know the set 2 sounds now. We have been practising since Christmas.

Set 2 sounds: ay   ee   igh   ow   oo oo   ar   or   air   ir   ou   oy.

Art: We looked at the Spanish famous artist Pablo Picasso and practised drawing animals in his style.

Class 1 Assesmbly: We have been busy learning songs, making props and learning lines for our assembly. The Class 1 assembly will be at 9.05 am on Friday 8th February 2019 and all parents are welcome to attend. We have sent letters out regarding costumes for the children. All children have speaking parts. Can you help your child learn the lines please?

    Have a lovely weekend!

    Ms Collinge

  • Sunday 20th January (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

This week some Year 1 children started their forest school sessions and it was a great success!

In Literacy we wrote the "Lost and Found" story beginning and middle using great descriptive vocabulary. The children are working very hard on writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.

In Maths we did some reasoning and problem solving activities with adding by counting on. We also revised number bonds to 10. A math activity was sent home (Number Challenge 1), you could time your child to see how fast your child can add up. Please carry on using Mathletics, we have a whole school Mathletics maths week coming up shortly.

In Science we labelled an Emperor penguin and wrote some sentences with the vocabulary (beak, webbed feet, flippers, etc).

In Geography and History we learned about the South Pole and Robert Falcon Scott who was a brave Polar explorer.

In Phonics we carried on revising the sounds and focussed on oo (moon), oo (book), ar (carpark),or (fork) a-e (snake) in particular. Mrs Burney is doing the phonics screening test with all the children, the results will be discussed at the parents evening. Some children have extra phonics homework due to the booster sessions with the headteacher Mrs Gaynor. An activity  (I Spy) was sent home to consolidate the sounds learned in class. Thank you for sharing your amazing  videos and photos on tapestry!

Special mention to Ella Drake who won a Golden Bike Award on Spellodrome! What a superstar!

It is our parents evening next week. Can you please remember to send back the assessment packs (sent home before Christmas)?

    Have a nice weekend!

    Ms Collinge

  • Saturday 12th January (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

We have had a busy week. The week started with children coming to school as Significant People. We were amazed by your creativity and variety. Also the children prepared their speeches, it was quite impressive. (Please see tapestry for photos and videos.)

On Wednesday it was the school Open Day, where a lot of parents came into our year 1 classroom to support their children with maths. It was fantastic to have so many parents and grandparents in our classroom. The children loved it and felt proud to show off their work. Also we spotted parents helping not only their own child, but other children too; that was very kind!

Reading Homework Club: The children received an invitation to join our Mondays and Thursdays reading homework club starting on 28th January 2019. It is by invitation only.

Phonics: This week we have covered the following sounds: ay ee ea (a cup of tea) igh (igh-fly high) ow oo. A worksheet with the ow sound (ow-blow the snow) was sent home as homework. If your child brings it in school, they will receive a merit.

English: The children wrote the found posters about the lost penguin that sneaked into our classroom; wrote questions to ask about the lost penguin (Where is the penguin from? How did it get into our classroom?). We did talk for writing, then wrote the story beginning (Once there lived ...) describing the characters (the boy and the penguin) and the setting (the boy's village). We dressed the children as penguins and did some role-play. We also wrote a non-chronological report in our science lesson about emperor penguins.

Maths: We have been adding by counting on the number line and on the tens frame up to 20. Both great visuals for the children. (Please see tapestry for maths photos and videos.) A maths homework sheet was sent home for consolidation (adding jumps on the number line can be tricky!). Children will be rewarded by merits and raffle tickets. We have lots of prizes waiting to be won! I will add some games on Mathletics as well.

Reading: The reading mentors have said that our children have improved quite a lot. Reading every day and daily phonics helps our children a lot in English and Maths lessons. Just to let you know that the expected level for a year one child is to be on the reading band 4 at this point. Thank you for reading every day and let us know if you feel books are getting too easy for your children. Some children have a reading buddy from Year 5 who give up their lunchtime to read with some of our children.

Science: In science the children named the animals and then sorted the animals into different groups such as birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, etc.

    Have a great weekend!

    Ms Collinge

  • Sunday 6th January (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

I hope you have had a restful holiday and feel refreshed! We have had two very busy first days and can't wait to begin our new learning journey. The whole school topic this term is Significant People. On Monday (7th January) remember to send your child dressed as a Significant Person, I am sure it is going to be a fantastic day because some children have already told me that they are going to be significant authors, paleontologists, scientists, explorers, footballers, and singers. This is so exciting!

On Wednesday (9th January) it is a whole school Open Day 2-3pm, all parents are welcome in Class 1 classroom. Our focus is going to be reading and phonics.

Reading books: All books have been changed, please read with your child every day and remember to write a comment in the reading record. Some children had their books and reading records missing. Please can you make sure all school books are found and reading records completed with your comments. Thank you for reading over the holidays.

Forest school: Year 1 children will begin forest school as from next Wednesday (16th January). We have sent letters out to those children (14 children) who will start first, we can only have half the class. The other half of the class will do forest school in 6 weeks' time. All children will have the opportunity to experience forest school. Remember to provide suitable waterproof clothing and suitable footwear (wellies, walking boots). On the forest school day please bring your child dressed for the forest school and send in their school uniform in a bag.

PE kits: Remember to send a full PE kit (Outdoor PE clothing please as it is very cold outside!) so that your child can participate in the PE lessons. Only three quaters of the class had the correct PE clothing on Thursday.

Spellings: New spelling lists have been sent home for the Spring term. The tricky words are repeated and new words have been added based on the grammar requirements for Year 1 curriculum. For example, noun plurals -s and -es: week-weeks, cow-cows; watch-watches, fox-foxes.

Phonics: The children will be working very hard with learning new sounds and revising the previously learned ones. We might be sending a worksheet /booklet home for extra practice and consolidation and also so that you know which sound your child is learning. We are aiming to do one sound each day, so 5 sounds each week. Remember to go on other websites for phonics (www.starfall.com, www.topmarks.co.uk) and Spellodrome.

Homework Club: This term the homework clubs on Mondays and Wednesdays will be by invitation only. The focus will be reading comprehension and fluency. This will begin the week commencing : Monday 13th January. Please provide a small snack for your child.

Tapestry: Thank you for sharing your photos and observations over the holidays. I will try to share your amazing holiday adventures with the class! Remember to use Tapestry to show us your child doing some singing, dancing, outdoor exploring, writing, phonics and maths. Children can use it then for their Show and Tell in class.

    Have a great weekend!

    Ms Collinge

  • Friday 16th November (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

    Dear Parents,

    Another busy week!

Thank you for attending the parents drop in session, it was lovely to see so many year one parents. I have not had a chance to talk to all parents, please feel free to approach me after school if you have any questions.

This week in History we learned some facts about Christopher Columbus and his voyages. Your child can do a quiz on DB Primary and learn some more facts.

In Geography we learned about the seven continents and located them on the maps.

In Literacy we wrote sentences with prepositions (past, through, over, around) and days of the week. The children have been working hard on sentence writing , punctuation and handwriting. There are some spellings games and phonics games assigned for the children on DP Primary and Spellodrome. The logins are in the reading records. We really loved when you shared your child's writing on tapestry.  Some fantastic adventure stories about space and a great story with chapters on Minecraft!

Reading is very important in Year 1. If your child reads every day, then that will help in school with phonics, writing, word problems and speech and languge skills. Reading to children every day at age 4-5 has a significant positive effect on their reading skills and cognitive skills later on in life.

Every Wednesday we hear all children read and change their reading books. We have also had a few parent helpers hear children read this week. Can you remember to read every day and sign the reading record at least 5 times a week?

In Maths we have been learning number pairs to 5 and used the part-part whole model and lots of visuals (numicon, counters). You can ask your child, "If I have 2 sweets, how many more to make 5?" We have also carried out maths tests this week which required the children to give a quick answer to some calculations: 3+2= , 2+2=   , 4+1=   .  Next week the test will include simple take away calculations: 5-2=, 3-1=. Again I assigned some maths games on DB Primary and Mathletics for the children. The children liked listening to addition number songs by Jack Hartmann (just type "I know my number bonds 5" and his name on you tube), he sings and dances and the children liked that!

In Art the children made origami paper boats with masts and sails, which was quite a challenge. The children used the punch hole and the masking tape, it was very exciting! I think Mrs Burney secretly enjoyed it more than the children.

In Science the children learned about materials (plastic, wood, metal, rock, fabric, etc) and described the objects (waterproof, see-through, soft, hard, etc). We described the pirates treasure chest which was made out of metal, wood and fabric (inside). Some of the scientific vocabulary (see-through) was hard to read, but the children tried hard to read the words and used them in writing. If your child is into science, you could also chat at home about different materials of the toys they have and show us on tapestry.

Class 1 and 2  have started practising our nativity songs and dances and next week we will send a letter out about the costumes for your child. On Thursday the children are going to be making veggie healthy boats (sweet peppers, cucumber, carrots, cheese, soft creamy cheese, hummus ) so we are going to send a letter out about allegies and preferences.

    Have a lovely weekend!

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Saturday 3rd November (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

Class 1 have had a very busy week. The highlight of the week was our school trip to Manchester Airport Runway Visitor Park. The trip was educational and the children had a wonderful time looking at the landing and taking off airplanes, learning facts about the Concorde, sitting in the pilot's seat and exploring the different jobs available at the airport through role play. All the photos are available on tapestry, feel free to like and leave comments.

We have been learning bonds to 5 (3+2=5) in Maths and writing calculations using the add and equals signs. The star mathematician was Elizabeth, because her recording and understanding of the bonds to 5 was excellent.

In Geography we have started learning about Christopher Columbus and his voyages. In art we began our project "Message in the bottle". We have been also creating beautiful artwork (linked to our topic, with your child's photo if you wish) for parents to buy.

In Literacy we have been writing a recount of the trip and also learning about using capital letters for names. Our focus story is "Grandad's Island", you can find it on youtube. Our model sentence was: Robin loved visiting Grandad's house. The children changed the sentence by using their names.

Thank you for practising spellings and reading books. Please make sure your child reads every day and remember to sign the reading record 5 times a week.

Year 1 was the best class in school for going on Mathletics and Spellodrome, that made us very proud. We are so lucky to have such supportive parents. Please keep this up.

    Have a great weekend.

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 12th October (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

Class 1 received a letter from Spaceman Spencer asking the children to investigate some peculiar light green slime he had found in his rocket. First the children researched about three states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. The children decided it was definitely alien goo and carefully investigated how it felt. The children made a spidergram with lots of adjectives to descrive the alien slime: solid, liquid, runny, gooey, lumpy, drippy, etc.

The children are getting better at doing their spelling tests and this week we have had more children getting higher scores. Children like to practise spellings in the writing area using rainbow colours and doing wordsearches. Thank you for practising at home.

The star writer is Robin this week. We wrote facts about Neil Armstrong and it was great to see children using words like: orbit the Earth, Apollo 11, walked on the Moon, left footprints. The children thought hard about what to write and used punctuation. We have displayed the best piece of writing in the classroom and also in the school corridor.

In Maths we looked at making number sequences using numerals, words and images. We also thought about missing numbers.

E.g. seven, eight, nine;      7,8,9;    7____9.   It was a challenge to read and write number words: one, two, three; five, six, seven. One of the games on Mathletics included a similar activity where children had to match a numeral to the word.

Ten class 1 children got their Mathletics/Spellodrome certificates this week which is again an improvement from last week. Thank you for practising at home, children love it!

Next week is our church week. On Friday afternoon we are going to be at the church for harvest celebration, so we were hoping to have a space-themed class party on Thursday afternoon. Can you please send any space -themed items on Thursday morning: biscuits, cakes, etc.?

    Thank you.

    Have a great weekend.

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 5th October (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

Year 1 class had a special delivery today....a parcel from Baby Bear who found a rocket and flew to the Moon. Baby Bear wrote a letter to the children asking them to investigate a peculiar footprint he found on the Moon. Baby Bear sent the children some space scratch and smell stickers, a thermal blanket and some space boots! The children quickly realised that it was Neil Armstrong's footprint left on the Moon and had fun measuring his foot and compared it to their own feet.

The children had their first spelling test this week and were told their scores. Keep practising next week's spellings as well as revising the previous ones. We sent home a spelling practice sheet and a wordsearch, but I am sure you have your own creative ways of practising spellings at home.

All reading books were changed and all children were heard reading either to Ms Collinge or Mrs Burney on Wednesday. Can you please make sure your child reads every day for 10 minutes? Can we please also remind you to look after school equipment (books and reading records) ?

Thank you for attending the meeting on Thursday about Year 1 phonics screening check. We will be sending a pack home to those families who didn't manage to attend.

    Have a great weekend.

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Saturday 29th September (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

This week Class 1 children practised counting in 1s, 2s and 5s across the 100 interactive number square and represented numbers to 10 with various objects, on the clock, coins, shapes, number lines, etc. Can you please collect conkers, acorns, pine cones and send them into school? We could use them in Maths.

In Literacy the children wrote great sentences describing the moon. The children used adjectives (describing words) and the star writer this week is Julia. It was fantastic to see three Year 1 children receive their Spellodrome and Mathletics certificates at our Friday Celebration Assembly. Thank you for practising spellings already and improving maths skills on Mathletics.

All children have been given a reading book. Please can you make sure your child has read the book and is ready to swap it on Wednesday? Also, any parent helpers are welcome to hear our children read. All induction training will be given in school.

In art the children designed their beautiful Christmas cards, which will be sent off to be printed.

On Thursday we celebrated European Languages Day. Stef (Max's mum) kindly came into school and taught year 1 children how to say numbers to 10 in German with some rhyming words. The children performed at the end of the day in front of the whole school. Thank you, Stef, you were amazing with the children!

Just to let you know that we have assigned new fun games on DP Primary. All log-ins for DP Primary, Mathletics, Spellodrome are in the reading records.

Finally, a warm welcome to Rio, a new pupil in Class 1. I hope you will make lots of new friends at our school.

    Thank you for your support!

    Have a lovely weekend.

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Our Busy Week (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

Class 1 children have been learning facts about planets in our Solar system and made beautiful collages.

In History and Literacy class 1 children wrote lovely sentences about the space 'firsts' like Laika the dog, Albert I the monkey, Yuri Gagarin, Valentina Tereshkova and Neil Armstrong. It was so hard to choose the star writer of the week! The children also began learning new sounds and year 1 tricky words.

In Maths Class 1 children have been busy singing counting songs, counting cubes and space objects using a tens frame accurately and writing numbers correctly! "Around the tree and around the tree, that's how I write my number three!" said the children.

We are looking forward to meeting all parents at our Year 1 parents meeting on Tuesday at 3:30pm or 6pm. The creche is available for parents attending the meeting at 3:30pm.

    Ms Collinge and Mrs Burney

  • Maths: sorting objects (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

In Maths we have been sorting objects (planets, rockets, aliens)  into groups and explaining how we have done it (by colours, shapes, number of eyes, etc).

  • Rocket Mice (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

Class 1 children have been making rocket mice. This activity involved shooting a rocket mouse high in the air by rapidly  squashing a plastic bottle launcher. We talked about the forces: push, air resistance and gravity.

Can the children bring a large milk bottle into school on Thursday, so we could expreriment whose rocket mouse flies the highest?

    Thank you. Ms Collinge

  • Space Explorers (tcollinge.allsaints-pri.stockport)

Class 1 have started their new topic of Space Explorers. The children have settled really well and enjoy exploring different areas in the classroom.

First the children shared what they already know about the topic of space. Then the children experimented how different objects fall. The children found out that the ball bounces, the rock falls straight down and the feather floats. Finally the children recorded their findings in the science books. We talked about Isaac Newton who invented gravity that pulls objects downwards. We were amazed by children's answers and knowledge!

  • Friday 27th July (Mrs Manning)

What an end to our time together in Class1! On Thursday we had our Spelling Bee and Ice Cream Challenge afternoon and we were so very proud of the children in Class 1 for their participation, and for achieving so many of their spelling targets. What a fabulous class they are!

The children have had a fantastic year and it was lovely to celebrate all that they have achieved in our special celebration assembly as well as our own class party.

We hope that the children have a wonderful holiday from school and get to spend some quality time with their families as we prepare for the next chapter of their school life and the adventure that awaits in Year 2!

We take this oportunity to remind you about the Library reading challenge. A bookmark containing details of it went home a few weeks ago. You can find more information about the competition at Marple Library.

Thank you so much for the lovely gifts and cards that the parents and children in Class 1 have given to us, we feel very lucky to teach your children and to be part of the All Saints school community, and all your kind words mean so much to us.

Fingers crossed that the good weather will continue through the holidays!

    See you in September,

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 team.

P.S. some of the children were given the oportunity to take a maths work book (which they had been working on in school) home over the holidays. Please be reassured that this is not homework, and please do not feel obliged to complete the maths workbooks for September!

  • Friday 20th July (Mrs Manning)

What an amaing week we have had in Class 1!

This week we made fabric, but instead of weaving like Oldknow did, we fused fabric using a wet felting method. It was tricky and involved patience and skill. The children were very careful and had wonderful attention to detail as they followed the process through from beginning to end. We were ever so proud of them! Today we mounted our fabric onto card in a frame design to take home. The children were reluctant to cut their fabric into different shapes, and we can understand why, they are beautiful just as they are. The children will take them home next week.

In maths we have been playing games and we have been looking for patterns using our tens and ones, coins and doubles. The games that the children particularly enjoy, and which are easily available to buy new or second hand online are: Sum Swamp (by LR Learning Resources), High Seas Adventure (by LR Resources again), and the maths based Orchard Toys games aimed at children over 5 years old. Even if the level of maths is basic, playing maths games does wonders for turn taking, communication, problem solving and using maths in context.

As well as these games, an app was recommended to us this week. It is called 'Making 10 Plus'. It has a picture of a cat on the app in Apple App Store and is a free game. I have downloaded this app and have played it several times with my own children (it's quite addictive!), and it was recommended by another school. We would, however, always recommend that you try out any app that you download yourself before giving it to your child. The great thing about this app is that you can set the level of challenge that is right for your child, and it helps children to memorise those bonds that are less common (eg - bonds to 10 are frequently used, but it's useful to know what numbers make 8, 9, etc). In this app the children can choose the number they have to make from a selection, and they can choose whether they use numberals or a dice face.

We highly recommend doing this with your children even without an electronic game. Just saying "give me all the ways you can think of to make 7, how can we check we have them all?" will really get those maths muscles flexing!

Next Friday we will mark our last day in Class 1 with a little celebration. We would be so grateful for any small party food donations that you can send in on Friday morning so that the children have some extra treats to share.

Well done Class 1 for yet another wonderful week!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 team

  • Friday 13th July (Mrs Manning)

This week in Year 1 we have been thinking about time. We've started to learn about quarter-past and quarter-to. But we've also been thinking about different measurements of time too; like what you can do in a minute compared to what you can do in an hour, or a week, or a month or even a year! Time is such an abstract concept, it can be tricky to understand how it all fits together. We've also been talking about times of the day, and this is something the children can begin to understand at home too (eg - we gt to school at 9am, and we leave at 3.15pm, etc). Next week we will remind ourselves about money, coins and values.

Well done to everyone for giving Mathletics a go. Please do keep using this fab resource at home. It has really given the children a massive confidence boost and their maths skills will inevitably benefit. A special 'well done' to Alice for being so very proud of your score last night, we were very proud of you too, as we are of all our little maths superstars in Year 1!

This weekend the children have been tasked with learning by heart a verse of a famous poem/book for a special occasion next week. This can count as this week's homework!

    Have a lovely weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team

  • Friday 6th July (Mrs Manning)

This week Year 1 had a taste of being 'big Year 2s' on our Transition Day. We did some extra special joined-up handwriting and talked about how we want to see our classroom change to match the move up to Year 2.

In Maths we talked about 'finding the difference' between two numbers. We used numicon and number lines to help us see, visually, what 'finding the difference' looks like. Well done Class 1!

On Friday we had a fantastic visit from 'That Poetry Bloke', Craig Bradley. As ever, the children were in hysterics and loved finding rhymes and experimenting with words. The hall was alive with gasps of laughter and infectious giggles all afternoon!

Enjoy the weekend, and stay safe in the sun!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team.

  • Friday 29th June (Mrs Manning)

Before we update you on this week in Year 1, we just wanted to say.....WELL DONE YEAR 1!!! You were the class who earned the MOST certificates in Mathletics this week, out of the whole school! The children are loving this fabulous resource and it is going to help their maths immeasurably going forward. It's great to see the children getting excited yet again about Maths. What a fabulous class of mathmaticians we have! Wouldn't it be wonderful to win again next week....?

In Class 1 this week we have had quite a 'foodie' week. The chidren chopped vegetables for making soup with Mrs Manning, and made cheese sandwiches with Mrs Mylrea. Some of the children even sampled the lettuce that we have been growing in our planter. Well done Class 1!

We have continued to work on our reasoning skills in maths, this week using division and multiplication (for example - if there are 24 shoes in the dressing up box, how many children can have a pair?) We talked about using knowledge of our times tables to answer division questions.

Please do remember that it is the school fair next Friday!

Have a lovely weekend in the sun!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and the Year 1 team.

  • Friday 22nd June (Mrs Manning)

We have had a lovely week this week in Year 1. We had the opportunity to learn from Hilary at Marple Historical Society, who told us lots of interesting information about Samuel Oldknow. This inspired some fabulous writing as we made and composed our own thank you cards and messages.

It has been fabulous to hear all about how much the chidren are enjoying our new resource, Mathletics. Parents of chilren further up the school will remember that we have had this resource before and it has always proved to be a massive hit. Please do encourage your child to go on it. If your child receives a 'certificate' through the site and you are able to print it off, please send it in so that we can give them lots of praise. If you are unable to print the certificate off, please feel free to put a note in your child's reading record so that we can make sure they get praise that way too. If you are having any difficulty with logins, please let us know!

This week we had our big 'lego challenge' where we attempted to build a structure as strong as Oldknow's mills. We used lego, and made a 'fair test' to construct lego towers in teams. Then, using our fair test further, we tested to see which was both the strongest and the tallest. The children really enjoyed this lesson and learned a lot from experimenting, and working in a team, in this way. Well done class 1!

We hope you have a super weekend,

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Class 1 team.

  • Friday 15th June (Mrs Manning)

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful half term. The children have returned to school full of energy and enthusiasm. We are going to have a fantastic final half term in Class 1!

This week we began our topic on Samuel Oldknow. The children went on an Oldknow walk up to the church to find out more about this historical figure and why he is so important to our local history. The children have already learned so much about Oldknow already!

Inspired by Oldknow, we have been investigating toys from the 18th and 19th Century. We have been reflecting on what it means to be remembered in history. We even wrote our own blue plaques celebrating what we hope we will achieve in the future. We have had world famous football stars who scored DOUBLE hat-tricks in the World Cup for England, as well as olympians, performers, world renowned vets and ninjas. Well done Class 1!

In science we have been designing a 'fair test' to find out which team's lego tower (to be built next week) is the strongest. We will be returning to 'materials' in science this half term and, again inspired by Oldknow, will have a go at making our own felt using a traitional method. Watch this space!

You may have noticed that we are growing lettuce outside Class 1. Next week we will be using that lettuce to make our very own picnic sandwitches.

In maths we thought about sharing, and using bar models. We are also having a big push on fluency with our 2, 5 and 10 times tables, as well as number bonds to 10 and 20 (importantly, looking for patterns to help us to remember them). I have set the children a mini-challenge this half term in maths to memorise all of their bonds to 10 and 20 without needing to count and work them out. If the children already feel confident with their 2s, 5s and 10 times tables, they may wish to start learning their 3 times tables using Times Tables Rockstars. Next week we will tackle problem questions involving multiplication and division and will see what strategies we can use for counting forwards and backwards in 10s.

This week our growth mindset award went to Alice. Logan was our Star Writer. Well done Logan and Alice!

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the carnival!

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team

  • Friday 25th May (Mrs Manning)

What a wonderful Active week we have had! Yesterday we took part in Sports Day and it was so nice to see so many families there in support, thank you to everyone who was able to make it. The children had a great time. All week the children have been both improving their sporting skills, but they have also had the oportunity to "show off and share" all of the wonderful skills that they have already. It has been so nice for us teachers to see how excited the children get about being active and keeping healthy. We had visits from a football coach today, and a cricket coach. Earlier in the week we had a visit from someone who taught us all about healthy eating and we had a go at preparing a healthy snack too. The children have also had Forest Schools, which is always a huge favourite in Class 1.

As it was Active Week we did not have our usual celebration assembly, but in class we awarded Lily Star Writer and our Growth Mindset award went to Summer. Well done Lily and Summer!

We hope that the children enjoy their Whit half term break, they truly deserve it! We have not set any formal homework but we would (as always) recommend continuing to read with your child as this is the best way to keep their learning going over the long break.

It is doubly important this holiday to continue with your child's reading, because when we come back to school it will be time for the Year 1 Phonics Screening. The children have had lots of support in school to prepare them for it, and we know how wonderful all of our families in Class 1 have been in supporting the children at home too. Please do try to find time during the holidays to keep practising phonics and reading. This is said with the big caveat that it is also absolutely essential that the children have a rest as well so that they can come back refreshed for the screening test and ready to enter their final half term of Year 1 raring to go!

Have a fabulous break, and we will see you in June!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Class 1 Team.

  • Friday 18th May (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been getting crafty! You will see from all the goodies that the children have taken home tonight that they have been getting creative, which they absolutely love to do.

We have been making all sorts of momentos today to commemorate the Royal Wedding that is happening tomorrow. We talked about why it is an exciting time and what we can expect to see on the day. Miss Aboo and myself felt very old when the children said they didn't know who the Spice Girls were when we were looking at potential guests in an article on the CBBC news site! But the children were very interested to see some pictures of Windsor and photos of Claire Ptak making the cake for the big day.

In maths we did a quiz to help us know what gaps we need to fill going into our final half term in Class 1. The results showed that we need to take a look at data collection (ie making and interpreting graphs etc) and the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, so these will be things we continue continue to focus on after the upcoming break. Finding quarters of numbers, and dividing ("sharing"), are also things that we will continue to work on and which the children would benefit from practicing at home. Once we have had a chance to digest the information we have taken from the quizzes we will send them home for you to see. These are not used to assess your child, they are simply used to show what the children would benefit from revisiting next half term.

Today our Star Writer was Emma.

Our Growth Mindset award went to Benjamin.

    Well done Emma and Benjamin!

    Have a lovely weekend,

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Class 1 team.

P.S. Don't forget... it is Active Week next week!

  • Friday 11th May (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been designing invitations for the Scarecrows' Wedding. There is a lot of information that needs to go into an invitation, but also they must look fabulous! The children had lots of fun making these and did some amazing writing in the process.

We took time to think about Axel Scheffler's artwork for the Julia Donaldson books, and we looked at the common features. We decided that he likes to use vibrant colours, especially primary colours. He likes to draw big round eyes, and he always has quite a thick black outline around the things in his pictures. We had a go at making our very own monsters, inspired by the Gruffalo, in the style of Axel Scheffler.

In maths this week we used bar models for answering problem questions, and for recording our number bonds. We also made venn diagrams for sorting numbers and tried weighing items using bucket balance scales. Next week we will do a quiz to see what we need to work on in the coming weeks, and we will work on our hundred square skills too. We will also have a go at measuring using rulers and metre sticks.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 team.

  • Friday 4th May (Mrs Manning)

In Class 1 this week we had some very special visitors...the kittens came to visit! The class were very excited to welcome them and we are very grateful to one of our very kind mummies who brought them in for us to meet. We thought about questions we could ask, to find out a little bit more about what kittens need in line with our ongoing science work on animals.

We have also been continuing our science topic on plants, thinking this week about the different parts of plants and their functions. We have plans to plant and grow some lettuce that we can use for some healthy eating next half term, and next week we will think about what the best conditions will be for helping our lettuce to grow.

We did some amazing writing this week, retelling the story of The Singing Mermaid. Well done Jake for being our Star Writer!

This week our Growth Mindset award went to Holly. Well done Holly!

In maths we used 'bar models' to help us to find halves and quarters. The children are begnning to use partitining as well as their times tables to work out this tricky maths, well done Class 1! Some of the class had a go at experimenting with weights and next week the other children will have a go at this too. We will also take another look at bar models, and sorting items using venn diagrams. We will continue to work on our mathematical language.

As a special homework, the children have been invited to enter into a competition to design (by drawing)  a stadium or a sporting theme based on the Commonwealth Games 2018. The winner will have their design created out of lego, to be presented at Stockport Plaza on 11 July. The winning designer will also win a trip for their class to the LEGOLAND discovery centre and an annual pass for their family!. Your design needs to be a drawing, coloured in pencil crayons, pens or painted. The Commonwealth Games will be held in The Gold Coast, Australia, this year, 2018. Try to make sure you put something in your design that reflects where it is taking place this year so that it is specific to these particular games. Please make sure your name and class is written on the back and that your entries are given to Mrs Preece on Tuesday 8 May.

Have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend!

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team.

  • Friday 27th April (Mrs Manning)

This week in Year 1 we have had a busy time with our Amazing Authors topic. We have been designing maps and formulating questions inspired by The Singing Mermaid, and we have been writing our very own book reviews. The children are really enjoying this topic, and we love hearing about all the fantastic books that the children are reading at home too!

In maths we have been working out whether 1 and 2 digit numbers we generate using dice can be shared between two. This involves dividing (and writing number sentences using the divide sign), and in some cases beginning to think about remainders. We've also been thinking about "difference" and how to calculate change. We used subtraction, and also asked the question "if I pay for this item with my money, how much will I have left for later?" Lots of practice with coins at home, and thinking about money will help the children immensely with this very practical maths.

Next week we will be problem solving using dividing, and we will continue to think about measuring, focussing on weights.

In science we have been learning about bulbs and seeds, and different trees and plants that grow from them. We will soon be planting our very own seeds as well! For homework this week we have diverted from the usual grid, and have sent home a tree-hunting activity. We hope that the children will enjoy this activity, which we can use in class to help form a picture of how much the children know about leaves, trees and identifying different plants. Please do not stick the homework into the homework books this week, just send them back to school in your child's usual bag.

Finally, the school will be running an art club in May. There are limited spaces, but if your child would like to attend, please ask Mrs Manning or Mrs Mylrea for a form. Forms need to be in by no later than Wednesdaay next week.

    Have a lovely weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team

  • Friday 20th April (Mrs Manning)

Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed the Easter break and are now enjoying this beautiful sun!

This week in Class 1 we went outside to investigate Spring. We looked for signs of Spring on the field and talked about the weather. We found blossom, daffodils, green shoots and budding leaves. We also found a magnolia tree that is beginning to flower. Then we used oil pastels to draw pictures inspired by Spring, in the impressionist style of Monet. We wanted to create pictures that feel like spring as well as look like spring. The children have taken them home, we hope you like them! Elliott said "It was fun looking for things outside."

In RE we have been learning about Shabbat as part of our new RE topic on Judaism. The children enjoyed thinking about the traditions of other faiths. We made mind maps to document what we have learned. Margot said "It was useful to see some clips about Shabbat to see what Jewish people do." Next week we will be looking more closely at the traditions of Shabbat and exploring the items used to help celerate it.

We have started to read Matilda in class, and the children are really enjoying it. Some children have even started to read it at home, they are enjoying it so much. What a great way to start our topic on Amazing Authors! We also wrote the Gruffalo story ourselves, which the children really loved.

In Maths we measured capacity using standard units. If you ask the children why we need standard units to measure, instead of random measurements, they should be able to explain  (we shared a very helpful story about a King and his helpers, one with very big feet and one with very small feet, measuring for a new bed for the Queen). We then talked about how we can measure water, and had a go at measuring using litres. We estimated how many cups it would take to fill a litre jug. Then we had a go at probem solving using the language of measurement (great than, smaller than, full, empty, half full etc).

Next week in maths we will think about using taking away to calculate difference, in particular when calculating change. We will also continue with our mini-topic on measurement in maths.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team.

  • Thursday 29th March (Mrs Manning)

Class 1 had a very exciting end to our Spring term today. We went up to the Church for a special celebration of the Easter story. Reception and KS1 shared all the things that we have been learning about Easter. It was a lovely celebration, made even more special by the community of the Church who had arranged the space where we usually sit into distinct areas representing the different stages of the Easter story. Year 1 shared what we have been learning about Palm Sunday, including a prayer that we wrote togther as a class.

We had a party in Year 1 to wish one of our dear friends the best of luck on his new adventure, and then we had the Spelling Bee and our ice cream party to celebrate all of our individual achievements in spelling this term.

Although this has been a short half term, especially with the snow days which meant that we could not come in to school, the children have managed to fit so much in. I am sure they will be incredibly tired, and they certainly deserve a nice long break. We have not set any homework over the Easter break, but we always recommend continuing to read with your child. If you wish to do anything else to support what we will be doing in school during the Summer Term, we recommend phonics practice (using the recommended apps and resources we have provided, many of which can also be found on our website), using Times Tables Rock Stars and games such as counting money in 2p, 5p and 10p groups.

We hope you have a lovely Easter break!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 team.

  • Friday 23rd March (Mrs Manning)

This week in Year 1 we have had a busy time writing extensively about our dinosaurs and painting beautiful illustrations to go with them. The children's writing is coming on in leaps and bounds and we are sure that this is in no small part due to how much they have engaged with our topic! Ask the children about the magic seeds that grew in their stories and you will get a taste of the imaginitive stories they  have been crafting this week.

In maths we have been using number lines for grouping numbers. Now we have mastered this we are starting to use number lines as a resource for helping us to multiply and divide. For example, with 25 divided by 5, we can see how many groups of 5 there are on our number line up to 25. Likewise for multiplication. We had planned to look at measuring and capacity as well this week but as the children were moving along so quickly with number lines we capitalised on the momentum and kept going with that instead. We will take a look at capacity next week.

A few children have said that they are finding it difficult to answer questions on our new resource, Times Tables Rockstars. I hope that this will help you:

    1. You must find All Saints school on the login system first. It has to be typed exactly as "All Saints' C Of E Primary School, Cheshire" for it to work;

    2. I have set the correct level times tables in 'Garage' and 'Arena' games areas. Your child will be allocated into a group, and in that group, the times tables should be at a level that they can access. If you would like a harder/easier level of times table challenge please let me know and I will do this for you.

    3. If your child opts for 'Studio' or 'Festival' games they will get an array of questions up to 12 x 12.

We are all still getting used to this new fabulous resource, so please do feed back any questions or comments and I will do my best to get to the bottom of them for you.

    Have a fabulous weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team.

  • Friday 16th March (Mrs Manning)

Thank you to everyone for making such an effort with the Where's Wally and other Word Book Day costumes, it really did make for a special atmosphere in school and the children loved dressing up. Thank you also to everyone who made it to our open afternoon. The children enjoyed reading with their grown ups and everyone enjoyed having some time to look at books and read to eachother.

This week in year 1 we have had a great time with our dino-topic!

The children made dinosaur trump cards, taking time to think about the characteristics of the dinosaurs they have been learning about. We also had an imaginary trip to the Museum where we had to sort out some money problems. We had a go at dividing on a number line (we will revisit this next week thinking about how to group numbers on a number line for different number problems), and we looked at arrays of dinosaurs, thinking about the columns and rows and how knowing what is in a row and a column can help us to find a quick way to count the total (ie - 6 rows of 5 means we have 30 dinosaurs).

Next week we will continue to think about 10s and 1s, and dividing and multiplying on a number line, and we will also experiment with capacity using water.

We learned about Palm Sunday this week and next week we will continue to reflect on why people were so excited to welcome Jesus.

We will also think a little bit more about Spring, and what signs we can see of Spring (here's hoping for a bit more sunshine!).

    Have a lovely weekend,

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team.

  • Friday 9th March (Mrs Manning)

This week we have really been getting stuck in to our Dinosaurs topic and the children are loving it! We found a very precious Dinosaur egg which has acted as wonderful inspiration for our literacy, and we explored some truly spectacular adjectives to describe dinosaurs.

In maths we did some great measuring with rulers, trying to be as accurate as possible. We also thought about counting in 2s, 5s and 10s again, but this time we made our very own number sentences with repeated addition and multiplication. We also used number bonds and other known facts (like doubles) to answer maths questions. If you get time at home, practicing these times tables and counting 2ps, 5ps and 10ps will support the work we are ding in the classroom.

Next week we will return briefly to fractions, and we will think about sharing.

In science we learned about our senses and next week we will take a break from our work on humans including animals to go on a hunt for Spring in the school field!

    Have a fabulous weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team.

P.S. the children's passwords for Times Tables Rockstars will be given out at the beginning of next week. Apologies for the delay in getting this to you.

  • Friday 2nd March (Mrs Manning)

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely half term. Unfortunately the weather has disrupted our first week back, but we hope the children have enjoyed the snow nevertheless!

This week in class 1we learned all about diplodocus and wrote a menu for him. We had lots of fun in the snow, and hope that you did at home too! Our Homework Grid for our new topic and our Newsletter for this half term (Spring 2) are now uploaded as documents for you to access here online.

Thank you so much for all the sponsorship money you have provided which will go towards our new library. It really is appreciated and the children are getting very excited about the plans which we have been discussing in school.

Next week in maths we will be thinking once more about our bonds and exploring ways that they can help us to add. For example 3 + 7 + 2 = 12 is easy if we know that 3 and 7 make 10. We will also measure some dinosaurs using standard measures and will discuss why it is important to use standard measures and not something irregular (like, for example, hands, which are all different sizes).

Stay safe and warm, and we will see you next week!

From Mrs Manning, Mrs Mylrea and all of the Year 1 Team

P.S. because of the weather disruption and school being closed, we have not given the children their login details for Times Tables Rockstars, but these will be provided next week.

If you would like some special homework ideas to be getting on with during the bad weather, a 'snow-day diary' would be a great thing for the children to do and we will make time to share them on Thursday afternoon. If you could add pictures (whether drawn or photos) that would be lovely too!

  • Friday 16th February (Mrs Manning)

We hope that everyone enjoyed our fantastic assembly this week. The children certainly loved performing it and the costumes really had the Wow Factor! Thank you so much for all of your support in making it such a wonderful exprience for the children.

We have finished our special DT project working on our aquariums. We hope you'll agree that they are spectacular. Now that the children know how to make moving springs from paper and card we hope that they will be able to be more adventurous with what they believe they can create with simple materials. If your child does make something with moving parts, please do send in a picture for us to look at in class!

In maths we practiced using our bonds to 10 and 20. It can be fun for the children to play quick-fire games at home remembering their bonds (for example, throwing a ball and with each catch saying the matching part to the thrower's bond, ie I say 14 you say 6). Games like this really help children to have maths skills at their fingertips. We will be using our bonds for more fun maths after the half term break. We also thought about 'x' as a mathematical symbol.

The children have worked so hard this half term. They have loved forest school and gymnastics with Mrs Hogg. Next term we have lots more exciting things to do too, and we look forward to seeing everyone after a nice break to recharge batteries and (hopefully) enjoy some rain-free days in the crisp winter sunshine!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team

P.S. we have an exciting new maths resource coming next half term. Some of the children further up the school have already started to use it. 'Rockstar Times Tables' is designed to help children with multiplication (and associated division) and passwords will be issued shortly. Watch this space!

  • Friday 9th February (Mrs Manning)

We had our last Forest School session in Year 1 today. We would like to say a massive thank you to Mrs Eva and Andy for all their wonderful actvities and for helping our children to appreciate and enjoy the great outdoors!

We have been doing even more work on our shoe box aquariums too. We made moving springs with card today. Making things that move is so much trickier than making things that just stay still, but it takes real skill and the children enjoyed this a lot. We talked about how we can make things that move like lego, or using split pins with card. We bet the children would love making things that move at home, and we would love to see any pictures of things that you do make at home between now and the end of Year 1!

In maths we looked again at clocks showing half past the hour, and the children are really coming along with their clock drawing and clock reading. We also did a Super-Interractive-Quiz about 3D shapes. There was a lot of debate about vertices and edges, faces and sides, but by the end of our quiz the children were experts!

Next week in maths we will do a general maths quiz, and we will try measuring using centimetres and metres.

We look forward to seeing some of you at our very special assembly next week too.

    Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all of the Year 1 Team.

  • Friday 2nd February (Mrs Manning)

This week in class 1 some of the chidren have started to make their shoe box acquariums. They are looking fantastic! The other chidren will start theirs next week. There is a lot to be done on these boxes- they are going to look absolutely fabulous, and the children are using their own designs, and they are using their artistic as well as DT skills. We are folding, cutting, painting, sticking, using string and making springs. We hope to share them with you in our assembly soon!

In maths we have been thinking about quarters and how to share amounts equally between 4. This may involve halving the half to find the quarter, or it might involve sharing out counters to help us find the answer.

Next week we will continue thinking about time, but we will also revisit maths using coins.

We still need more boxes for our aquariums. Shoe boxes are great, but anything works! Cereal boxes have proven to be very effective.

Margot says she enjoys forest school, there was a "ginormous puddle and you dip wheat in the puddle, and paint on a tree, it is muddy!"

Joseph says "I am proud of the bridge I made over the puddle."

Finally, thank you to all of the grown ups who came to see us on our parents evenings this week.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and all the Class 1 team.

  • Friday 26th January (Mrs Manning)

This week in Year 1 we have been truly 'diving in' to our topic! We designed our very own under water worlds using a key, and we wrote a deep sea diary entry inspired by the book 'Dougal's Deep Sea Diary' by Simon Bartram. In maths we have been helping Tiddler (who is always late!) learn how to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour.

We have also been practising fractions in maths and began to use quarters. We will do some more work on halves and quarters next week. In particular, we will be putting our new matra 'Halve the Half to find the Quarter' into practice!

Try asking your little ones about odds and evens too; we've been talking about these a lot in class and the chidren are beginning to make connections between halving, even/odd numbers, and the two times table. Well done Year 1!

In science we had to explain to Freddy the Poison Dart Frog why Dolores the Donkey is not his mummy. This involved thinking about mammals and amphibians. The children have really embraced thiking about the scientific differences between different animals since our wonderful zoo trip.

Thank you Year 3, who did a marvellous assembly this morning! We have our assembly coming up in just a few weeks now and we have already started practising. You should by now have your costume letters for the assembly. We look forward to seeing your creations soon. If you need any help in this regard please do let one of the Class 1 team know.

Finally, if you have any empty boxes (shoe, cereal, other small boxes) at home, please do bring them in! We will be starting our DT project next Thursday and not every child currently has a box that they can use.

    Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Miss Aboo

  • Friday 19th January (Mrs Manning)

We have had a lovely week in Year 1 reflecting on our trip to the zoo and using it to inspire some great writing and some science. We've been thinking about the difference between two of our favourite animals from the zoo, the lions (mammals) and Komodo Dragons (reptiles). We loved the Komodo Dragon especially as he really showed off for us!

The children had a great day at the zoo. They behaved beautifully, and worked as a team to stay together in their small groups as we made our way around the huge site. We must have walked miles, but their enthusiasm never waned. They were absolute super stars and we are so proud of them all! We particularly enjoyed watching the sloth and learning about him from a really friendly volunteer. We also braved the bat cave (I was surprised at how many of the children were eager to walk through the bat cave, and that they all really enjoyed the experience...I must admit I was a bit nervous going in, but I loved it too!)

Well done class 1 for proving yet again that you are a super, wonderful class!

Well done to Max who is our star writer this week.

And well done to Dillon who was awarded our growth mindset award this week.

    Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Miss Aboo.

  • Thursday 11th January (Mrs Manning)

What a busy week we have had! We will write to update you on our trip to the zoo next week, it has been very exciting getting ready for it! We will share some pictures and will write a blog recalling our best bits.

On Tuesday we had our Book Awards. Thank you to everyone who attended, we hope you enjoyed it. Reading and reflecting on the nominated books was a great way of learning and the children responded really possitively to the whole experience.

In maths this week we started thinking about both halves of simple shapes and halves of quantities. We will focus more on halves of quantity next week, always remebering that 'half' means two equal parts (this vocabulary will help the children when it comes to putting things into 4 equal parts for quarters). Next week we will also start reading clocks (focussing on o'clock, and moving children onto 'half past' at a pace that each child is comfortable with over the next couple of weeks).

Time is tricky as it involves understanding 'short hand', 'long hand', 'am', 'pm', 'clockwise', 'hours', 'minutes', that there are 24 hours in a day but a clock only goes up to 12,  that we also use the 5 times table to count around the clock in minutes, and finally making sense of it all in the context of the children's own timetables. This is why we take it slow to make sure we are laying solid foundations!

After the zoo trip we will have some wonderful writing inspiration and will reflect on it in D&T, science and art too. If you could save any shoe boxes for us as mentioned last week we would be very grateful!

    Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney, Mrs Shaw and Miss Aboo.

  • Friday 5th January (Mrs Manning)

Happy New Year! We hope you had an amazing Christmas break. Often the long holiday after the first term in a new class is the holiday when everyone most needs to relax and recharge their batteries, but Christmas doesn't always allow for that! However, we have to say the children have come back full of energy and ready to learn, which is marvellous.

We kicked off our Spring term with a wow week focussed on the Book Awards and we will be holding our very own book awards next week. We read all of the books on the list. We wrote a book review, created some wonderful artwork inspired by 'Nibbles the Book Monster' and we had a very special visit from a drama teacher who helped us to work as a team.

Well done Year 1 for making such a great start to the new term and to 2018. We'll be starting our new topic 'Under the Sea' next week and we have our big trip next week too. There are exciting times ahead and we can't wait to get stuck in!

    Best wishes

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Miss Aboo

P.S. In connection with a design and technology project we'll be working on soon, please could you send in any spare shoe boxes you might have lying around at home. Thank you!

    HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!

As we are writing this we are filled with excitement for what we know will be a Christmas Sensation today! We start the day with our Christmas party and finish it with our wonderful carol concert up at church - a reminder that as many walkers as possible at 1.15pm would be wonderful, and also after the service walking back to school.

We would just like to take the chance to say a huge thank you for all your support this term; be that through amazing homework projects, reading daily with your child, helping them practise their spellings, taking them to inspiring places, contributing to charities, attending open mornings, coming on school trips....just everything you do that make you our fabulous All Saints' families.  We have LOVED teaching your children this term and cannot wait for the excitement that Spring will bring.

Tonight we will be sending home the 'tricky' words that your child will need to read and spell from memory by the end of the year to be meeting expectations.  There will be a little test on these during the first week back and results will be sent home so you will know which to work on with your little one, so maybe have a practise over Christmas if you can!

Again, let us wish you a very Merry Christmas filled with fun and memories for your families.  We look forward to any postcards telling us all about your holidays as part of our postcard competition!

    Many thanks,

Mrs Manning, Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Burney and Miss Aboo

  • Friday 15th December (Mrs Manning)

Thank you to everyone who came to watch our KS1 Nativity. I'm sure you'll agree it was very festive, and it was a real treat to see the children having so much fun while they performed so beautifully for us. Their confidence and complete joy in the whole production was really clear. Well done to Class 1 and the whole of KS1!

We're also so grateful for all the support you have given us for walking to the Church and back, for providing such amazing costumes and for all the picking up and dropping off last night too. Thank you!

We hope you enjoy next week's carol service if you can make it. The children have also been creating some beautiful things to share with you this Christmas and those will be sent home on Monday or Tuesday.

Please do have a lovely break this Christmas. If you choose to do anything 'homework' based over Christmas (and that is entirely up to you, please don't feel any pressure at all!) we always advise that reading to or with  your child, and counting with them, is the best way to keep them 'ticking over' until the new term starts. Sumdog is also great, and I will put a couple of new challenges on there if the children would like a more focussed session on Sumdog.

Have a lovely weekend, and we will see you for a very short week next week before we all have a lovely long Christmas break.

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Mrs Burney and Miss Aboo

  • Friday 8th December (Mrs Manning)

What a week we have had in Year 1! It's really starting to feel very Christmassy in school, and we have embraced that by doing lots of preparation for our gorgeous Nativity which we are sure you will all love. We hope to see as many of you there as possible on Thursday.

It was so nice to see so many parents at our mince pie afternoon. Mrs Manning and myself caught up with a lot of parents to discuss what we've been doing and what we'll be doing after Christmas. We also addressed questions one-to-one about individual children with parents, which is always really beneficial as it allows us to truly work in partnership. If you weren't avaiable on Friday but you have questions or concerns that you feel should not wait until the parents evening early next term, please do alwyas feel free to contact Mrs Manning or myself to arrange a time to speak about your child.

In maths this week we matched numbers with their names and we had a go at follwoing instructions to find hidden numbers using directional language (left, right, above, below etc). We also did our half-termly quiz. I will be reviewing the quiz papers and they will be available to take home if you wish after the Christmas break.

It is set to snow this weekend, so we hope you have a fun time and that we get to hear about all your children's snow-time adventures on Monday!

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning, Miss Aboo and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 1st December (Mrs Manning)

Well despite the cold weather we have had a heart warming week in year 1 getting ready for Christmas time with our beautiful Christmas tree appearing on Monday!  We have definitely started to get in the festive mood as our nativity is coming along beautifully.  Please don't forget to bring in your child's outfit as soon as it is ready - Australian costume for the boys and a chinese angel for the girls.  The children must be commended for how well they have learned all the songs and actions as well as the enthusiasm they are showing - you really are in for a treat!

We have been thinking about Christmas in our RE this week, looking at the Christmas story and how Christians believe that Jesus was a gift from God.  We have also discussed the gifts that the three wise men brought Jesus, whether the children think these were good gifts to take to a baby and talked about what we would give to a baby born in the 21st Century.

The children have also completed their ice cream challenge spelling assessment this week.  Many thanks to all the parents who have helped and encouraged their children to learn these spellings - we know some are tricky, our little year ones have a lot to learn but in the All Saints' Way please don't panic if your child didn't achieve all their scoops - all we ask is that they try their hardest and no little one will have an empty bowl on the day of the ice cream party!

We hope to see as many of you as possible at the drop in next Friday between 1.30pm-3.00pm, it will be, as always, a joy to have a little chat over a mince pie about your little superstar and the progress they have made this term.  As always, if you can't make the drop in but would value a chat just pop in before or after school.

Have a wonderful weekend and we will see you on Monday.

  • Friday 24th November (Mrs Manning)

On Monday we went on a trip to Staircase House in Stockport. We learned all about the people who lived there and how it was built. Max said "It helped us learn about The Great Fire of London because we were told all about how people lived then". Logan said "It helped us learn about the Great Fire of London because it was made of wooden parts and we saw how the house might burn down." Jacob said "we did some wattle and daub and it was fun!"

The children were a credit to the school on their trip and had a great time.

We also went on a short walking trip to the United Reform Church in Marple to see their display of Nativity scenes from around the world. "We weren't allowed to touch anything, but I enjoyed learning that the baby Jesus doesn't go into the main nativity scene until Christmas day" said Teddy. Lauren said "I loved all of them!" We talked a lot about the Nativity and how God's message of love is the true Christmas story (although the children said they do like getting gifts from Santa as well!)

The members of the United Reformed Church will be opening their doors to the public to view the display during an open morning on Saturday if you wish to see their impressive display of Nativity scenes.

Next week in Maths we will be talking about why it is helpful to put the 'big' number first when we are adding. We'll also be talking about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

Have a fantastic weekend and we hope to see some of you at the School Christmas Fair on Saturday.

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney.

  • Friday 17th November (Mrs Manning)

This week it was anti-bullying week in school. In Class 1 we have been thinking about all the ways we are different from eachother and how important it is to celebrate our differences. We made colourful paper gingerbread men whose patterns represented our personalities, and we joined them all together, holding hands, to show to the rest of the school and grown ups in a special assembly.

We did some amazing writing linked to The Queen's Hat as well as a booklet all about the Great Fire of London.

In maths next week we will be talking about doubles and we will be multiplying using arrays (pictures) to help us. We will also be adding 3 numbers (eg 3 + 2 + 5= 10).

Please remember that we have our school trip to Staircase House on Monday. All children will need a packed lunch and a drink in a disposable bottle that can be thrown away.

Today we have given out letters to the children confirming which costume they will need for our upcoming nativity. As can sometimes be the way in a busy classroom, some of these letters do appear to have been mixed up in the time between being given out and making their way into the children's bookbags! Therefore, please note that all of the boys will require an 'Australian' themed costume and all of the girls will require a 'Chinese Fairy' themed costume. Details of what these themes entail are on the letters and if you think that your child may not have received the correct letter please do let us know and we will provide another copy.

Finally, thank you so much for all the generous donations for Children in Need today. The children looked fabulous in their spotty outfits and hopefully will have had fun making money for an amazing cause too!

    Have a lovely weekend

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney.

  • Friday 3rd November (Mrs Manning)

    Welcome back!

This week in Class 1 we have been starting our Fire! Fire! topic, and what better way to top it off than with a visit from the fire brigade today. We had a special assembly during which the firemen taught us how to stay safe on Bonfire night.

We thought about the changing seasons this week in science and created some beautiful pictures showing how the seasons change between autumn and winter, and we talked about what we expect to be happening to the world around us as autumn turns to winter. The children experimented with repetition poetry and came up with some really wonderful autumn and winter poems using repeated refrains.

In maths we did a quiz to see how much we have learned so-far. The marked quizzes will be available to take home to look at next Thursday. We also tried finding all of the numer bonds for various different amounts, being careful not to miss any. We used counters to help us to keep track (ie - with 12 counters in one square, we moved a counter to another square one at a time which allowed us to see the changing numbers, 12+0 =12, 11+1=12, 10+2=12 etc). Working systematically in this way can be tricky but it helps the children to see patterns emerging.

Next week we will be talking about 'whole' and 'part' and using 'whole and part models' to solve maths problems (you'll often see these drawn as 3 circles in a triangle, with the number at the top being the whole, and the two circles beneath being the parts that make the whole). We'll also continue talking about how to make numbers using 10s and 1s.

From next Friday onwards half of the class will have forest school on Friday afternoons. You will know if your child is taking part this half term as there will have been a letter in their bag, handed out on Thursday, but there is also a list in the classroom if you are unsure. Because of this we will not have PE every Friday afternoon. The children will still, however, have PE on Mondays.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney.

  • Friday 20th October (Mrs Manning)

This week was Church week. The children had such a fabulous experience, working with members of the church community and thinking about walking in Jesus' footsteps. We are so grateful to all the members of the church who made this week so special for the children. And we are so grateful to all the parents, relatives and friends who helped with walking up to the church and back this week. We couldn't have done it without you.

We hope you enjoyed today's Harvest Festival. The children have really enjoyed learning all of the songs and felt very proud to perform them all in front of you. You've perhaps heard the tunes being sung around the house or in the back of the car; it's so heart warming to hear the children singing our Harvest songs to themselves around school or while they are working, it just shows how much they have enjoyed coming together to learn them.

We hope that the children have a nice long half term break. They always work so hard and give school their all, we suspect that they will be quite tired! If they do want to keep practicing their maths, I have put a challenge up on Sumdog (in the assessments area, but this really isn't an assessment, so please don't feel any pressure to do it!). This can be done as well as, or instead of, your child playing free-choice on Sumdog. I have set another generic 'challenge' too, but as I am not able to cherry-pick the questions you may find that your child prefers the 'assessment' challenge. Please do give me your feedback on how Sumdog is working for your child. I can post more assessments if the children like them.

Have a lovely half term, and we will see you soon.

    Best wishes

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 13th October (Mrs Manning)

This week in Year 1 we have continued our topic of Food Glorious Food by learning about where different foods come from in the UK. We also wrote a delicious recipe for carrot cake.

We also had an outside learning day where we centered one of our lessons around learning in the outdoors. Class 1 went on to the school field and collected the most interesting leaves we could find to decorate our pictures of hibernating creatures. We talked about the colours of autumn and were inspired to create autumnal pictures. These will be dry to take home next week.

In maths we are getting really good at counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, but please do keep practicing at home if you have the time! We also thought about doubles and had a go at doubling numbers to 5. We used the children to make a human number sentence, with equal numbers each side of the addition sign. This was a fun way to see doubles! Next week we will recap some of our learning and have a go at an end of half term quiz.

The children all now have their Sumdog login stuck into their homework books. Please do have a go, it is a great way to practice maths!

Please do also keep sending in your maths boasts for our boast board! The children get up to 5 merits for each note they bring in so it's well worth it! It is best to hand these to the teacher so that they don't get mixed in with your child's homework.

This week our children voted for Joey for the Growth Mindset award. Well done Joey!

Best wishes, Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney.

  • Friday 6th October (Mrs Manning)

In Maths this week in class 1 we have been completing missing number sums (for example 5 + ? = 10) using our number bonds and, if we were ready for it, using bigger numbers too. It was tricky but we are really getting the hang of it. Next week we will be thinking about doubles, and we will be thinking about language relating to routine and timetables (first, next, earlier, later, after that, in the afternoon, in the morning etc) and putting our day into order. This is a great building block for learning about days, weeks, months and time.

As well as continuing with our Food Glorious Food topic we have also been thinking about what mamals need to survive and we decided that the things humans need are not so different to what our pets need too. In PE we did 'The Beanbag Games' where the children were separated in teams to compete in various 'events' such as running with a beanbag, throwing a beanbag, balancing a beanbag. The children really enjoyed it!

In RE we have continued to think about the world and creation but this week we also talked about the Trinity. The children made 'Trinity Triangles' to help them understand the idea of God as 'three in one', being 'The Father', 'The Son' and the 'Holy Spirit'.

This week our class award went to Rafin. Well done Rafin!

  • Friday 29th September (Mrs Manning)

It was so nice to meet some of our class' lovely grown-ups this week in our parents meetings. Thank you so much for coming. We hope that you have a clearer picture of how we teach the key areas of Maths and Literacy in Year 1 now, and that you came away with a better understanding of why we teach using the methodology that we do. If you have any questions at all following on from those meetings please do let us know, we are always happy to talk with parents in partnership to support the children's learning.

This week in Year 1 we have been thinking about healthy eating and it has inspired some wonderful writing. The children wrote about healthy foods, like fruit and vegetables, but also thought about the importance of sleep. This is something we have been thinking about in science too. This week in science we talked about the things that humans need to survive, and the things that we like to have to keep us happy. It was tricky to start with because it took us a while to understand that the things we really, really need are actually very few but are incredibly important (like food, water, air, shelter and sleep). Although, everyone agreed that family, friends and company were top of the list of things that we like to have to keep us happy.

In maths we did some fabulous counting in 2s, 5s and 10s using arrays, and even had a go at being 'number sentence detectives' using arrays to guide us towards a number sentence. We also used coins to practice counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.  Next week we will practice adding by counting on, either in our heads or using a number line. We'll also talk about subtraction. The children sometimes have a chance to choose maths games from the 'green box' on a Thursday and Friday and this is proving very popular! If you have any maths games that your child likes to play we'd love to find out about them and perhaps add them to the box. Please do also remember to bring in your notes of any 'wow' moments your child has had at home relating to number or maths so that we can add them to our class maths boast board.

On Monday Year 1 will be performing a short assembly to the rest of the school. We would really appreciate it if you could help your child learn their words for Monday so that they can recite them confidently in front of the whole school.

Please can you also log on to DB Primary to help your child to learn their login from memory.

This week the children voted for both Holly and Jake for our growth mindset award. It was not planned, but Holly and Jake (completely by chance!) received the same number of votes, from completely different children! They were very happy to share their award. Well done Jake and Holly!

    Have a lovely, restful weekend.

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney.

  • Friday 22nd September (Mrs Manning)

We have had a fantastic week in Year 1. We had a visit from All Things Nice and the children enjoyed finding out about lots of different produce. It lead to some really wonderful writing. We had a go at captioning photos of ourselves and describing the foods we were holding. One of our children described her noodles and squiggly which we thought was perfect!

In maths we had a go at counting in 10s and 1s. We did this by making amounts of money using 10ps and 1ps.This is a really great activity to do at home to support the children's learning in class.

Next week we will be counting in 2, 5s and 10s using arrays (pictures) to help us.

This week our growth mindset award went to Elissa. Well done Elissa!

  • Friday 15th September (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been doing some fantastic writing all about our families and special people, and what they like to do. The children really enjoyed writing about their special people. This tied in beautifully with our open morning activity which was to make a 'Special People' tree. It was so nice to see so many grown ups in the class room helping the children and enjoying seeing wat they are doing.

In maths we had a go at making teen numbers using tens and units. Next week we will extend this by thinking about adding 10s (for example 10 + 20 = 30, or by putting blocks of ten or 10p coins together and adding them up) and then adding 1s too. This is the beginning of partitioning which is a really tricky concept but one that will help the children access some very exciting maths in the months to come. As well as these new concepts, we are working on the basics too, such as forming numbers the right way round, writing numbers beyond 20, and getting to grips with coins.

We began thinking about food in science this week and read a really lovely book called 'Ada Twist Scientist'. At the start of the lesson the children said that a scientist was someone who makes potions that go 'bang!' but by the end of the lesson we'd decided that a scientist is really someone who asks questions and investigates the answers. We made a big long list of questions about the food we eat and I hope that during our topic we will be able to answer some of them.

We wanted to do our balloon pop during the open morning but the logistics weren't quite right, so we did it after PE on Friday instead. It was very exciting! Well done Class 1 for raising so much money for our charity and congratualtions to Lily for winning the hamper!

Well done everyone for a fabulous second week in Year 1!

  • Friday 8th September (Mrs Manning)

Welcome to Class 1! We have had a truly awesome first three days! We've heard all about the gorgeous summer breaks that everyone has had, and we've already got into the swing of Year 1 learning. We are so impressed by how kind, friendly, considerate and conscientious the children have shown themselves to be already. Well done everyone!

This week in maths we have been finding different ways to make 5 and 10. You may have heard of 'number bonds' before, and this is just another way of referring to the pairs we use to make different numbers, such as 2 and 3 to make 5, or 1 and 4 to make 5. This week we also practiced writing number sentences (for example 1 + 4 = 5). Next week we will think about making 'teen' numbers using 10s and 1s.

In your children's bookbags this week you will find a lot of letters.... and a beautiful picture of a sunflower that they have drawn today. We took some real sunflowers and looked extremely closely at the colours and shapes in them and tried to make our own as realistic as we could. Well done everyone! You did a great job!

One of the letters in your child's bag will explain the plans for next Friday's Potter's Village Picnic at school. We really hope you can make it! As part of the charity picnic we will be arranging a chocolate hamper raffle in Class 1. We'd really appreciate it if everyone could donate something chocolate-y to add to the hamper this week so that it is ready for Friday. All donations, big or small, are welcome! The children will be designing beautiful raffle tickets for you to buy for £1 each. We are also planning a 'balloon pop', which you can enter for £1 on Friday.

We look forward to seeing those of you who can make it to next Friday's open morning too!

This week our Growth Mindset award, as nominated and voted for by the children, went to Sam. Well done Sam!

And finally, a quote from the children, when asked what they like about being part of Class 1 today Logan said "Everyone is kind to eachother and is a good person" what a lovely note to start the year on.

    Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney.

  • Friday 28th July (Mrs Manning)

Our last day in Year 1! The children have been an absolute dream this year, they are truly a wonderful class. We've had some great topics and each of them has brought new adventures for us to share together; like our trip to Knowsley, our Pirate visitor, and trip to Chatsworth to name but a few!

Thank you Class 1, you have been wonderful and we look forward to following your progress through the Years to come.

And thank you also for the lovely gifts and cards that you sent in for us. We're very lucky indeed, and are looking forward to pampering ourselves before we return for what we are sure will be another fabulous year with our next class.

Have a safe, restful and - above all - FUN summer break! We will see you in September!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 21st July (Mrs Manning)

We are nearly at the end of term and the children really do deserve a nice long break. They have worked so hard this term and have kept going. The children even did a tricky maths quiz on Thursday to show off just how amazing they are at maths! Well done Class 1, we are all so very proud of the work you have done and the friendships you have made this year in Class 1.

This week we had a lovely service at the church to celebrate our wonderful Year 6 children and to wish them all the very best for their transition to secondary school. Well done Year 1 for singing so beautifully and giving our Year 6 children a fantastic send off.

But....there is still one more week to go, and we hope to make the children's last week in Year 1 a fun one!

So, we will see you next week for our last 5 days in Year 1!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 14th July (Mrs Manning)

Well, it was a 'Pirate's life for us' this week as we celebrated our fabulous final topic with an assembly which we hope you will all agree was spectacular! Each and every child worked incredibly hard on it, and did a great job of performing it in front of the whole school and so many of their special people from home. We hope you enjoyed it. It can be a frightening prospect, performing in front of so many people, especially when you are just 5 or 6 years old, we can't stress enough how incredibly proud we are of Class 1. Well done everyone, you were truly amazing!

We enjoyed having Mr Bailey with us on Thursday this week, inspiring us with his amazing running stories and pictures. He even took us outside to see how many laps of the track we could do in 4 minutes. The children were desperate to do more running, and told us that they felt very inspired. Some children commented that they like to do the chidren's park run too, and others were interested in giving this a go. What an active class we have in Class 1!

In maths we used bar models to work out halves and quarters of really tricky numbers. We even had a go at partitioning numbers to do this (i.e. to find half of 48 we halved 40, then we halved 8). Ask the children what a bar model looks like, it is the first time we have used them for fractions but it really did help the children to see how they could work out fractions very clearly.

We had a go at estimating too. We used two tactics to improve our estimates: for large numbers of dots we thought about whether the number of dots looked more or less than 10, then whether it looked like more or less than 20, and so on; and for smaller amounts we looked at the layout of the dots, and whether we could recognise a dice face (if we saw a dice 5 configuration and a dice 3 configuration we could guess 8 without actually counting the dots). Well done everyone for a wonderful effort in maths this week!

Next week in maths we will see what we have remembered about bar models, and we will have a go at a quiz.

This week our growth mindset award went to Martha L. There was no star writer this week as we had so many sporting awards to give out.

    Well done Martha!

Well done to Lucy for winning a very special award for her sporting poem which was presented to her at an event at the Plaza in Stockport. We are incredibly proud of you Lucy!

    Have a lovely weekend everyone!

  • Friday 7th July (Mrs Manning)

Well, we are at the end of year another busy week in Year 1! The children were pirates for a day this week, and went on a swashbuckling adventure to the canal where they sent messages in bottles. Ooo-arr me hearties!

We  also had transition morning this week where the children went up to Class 2. The feedback was phenomenal, our children did a great job and are clearly very ready for the exciting challenges Year 2 has to offer them. Today we were treated to a beautiful assembly by our Reception Class, which was a chance to reflect and celebrate just how far they have come this year and the lovely relationships they have made. It is hard to believe that just a year ago our Year 1 class was in the same position, and it is really moving to reflect on how far they too have come. But that is enough of looking back....there are lots of exciting times to come and we just know the children are going to LOVE Year 2.

In maths this week we have been thinking about 'finding the difference'. For example, the difference between 5 and 7 is 2, and we can work this out by counting up 2 from 5, or counting down 2 from 7. Whilst the maths is relatively simple, the concept can be very difficult to grasp. Common misconceptions are that the children want to add the 5 and the 7, or that they want to just point out the biggest number. But we cracked it today! The 'breakthrough' came when we started discussing sweets: if Hugh has 10 Haribo and Evie has 8, how many more does Evie need so that her number is equal to Hugh's? What is he difference between Evie's number and Hugh's?......2! It is amazing how difficut mathmatical concepts suddenly become quite easy to grasp when you relate them to sharing out Haribo......!

Next week in Maths we will be taking one final look at fractions, we will have a go at estimating, and we are going to measure weight using grams.

    Have a lovely weekend!

  • Saturday 1st July (Mrs Manning)

This week we had Active Week and the children in Class 1 fully embraced every challenge and activity. Froom cray golf, to a Year 6 led obstacle course, Year 1 put in a wonderful show of effort and enthusiasm. Well done everyone! We also continued our science topic on healthy eating and thought about what we could serve in a Pirate Cafe as an alternative to unhealthy salt biscuits! We had some great suggestions, including feta salad, and chicken and brocoli curry, what great ideas!

Captain Jack came to visit us and taught us all about pirate life. We got to look at lots of artefacts. Kaiden had  go at lying in a pirate hammock and Matilda even had a go at wearing a stinky pirate coat! The children loved meeting a real pirate and asking lots of interesting questions.

Please can we take this oportunity also to remind everyone to send in pirate costumes on Monday for the trip to the canal.

There was no growth mindset assembly this week because of the Active Week activities.

Well done everyone for a fantastic Active Week!

  • Friday 23rd June (Mrs Manning)

We have had another busy week in class 1 with our Pirates topic. Today we did some tie dye and the children were wonderful. They followed instructions beautifully, and handled the apparatus carefully. The pirate pants are already looking wonderful and we have more work to do on them to make them look even more fabulous! Thank you to everyone for sending in the pants for this craft project. We have uploaded a document called 'Pirate Pants Pictures' onto the Class 1 area for you to see what we have been doing.

In maths we have been thinking about 'bigger' and 'smaller' numbers, using our 'croccodile teeth'....ask the children to explain it to you! We have also been using the words 'heavier' and 'lighter' and next week we will start measuring with g and kg.

We were not sure whether the children all picked up their copy of the Summer 2 spelling list and the homework grid last week. To try to help, we sent out more copies today. However, we have accidentally handed out last half term's homework grid and spelling list! We are so sorry for this mix up and hope it doesn't cause any confusion!

Please also note that we still have most of the Year 1 maths quiz papers from last half term. If you would like to see your child's paper and help them with the questions that they got wrong, or celebrate the ones they got right, they are available in Class 1 to take home.

This week out growth mindset award went to Lily.

    Our star writer was Evie.

    Well done Lily and Evie!

  • Friday 16th June (Mrs Manning)

Welcome back everyone! The children certainly seem really refreshed and ready to go after our lovely long two week break. We've had a fantastic week, topped off by Year 2's amazing class assembly this morning. We're really looking forward to ours in a few weeks time now. For the assembly, we have sent home some scripts for the children to look at. Even if your child does not have a speaking part, please can you take time to read through the script with them so that they get really used to what happens and when. We're working hard on making it a real treat for the children and grown ups who come to see it! And they love practicing their song too.....!

On that note.....thank you so much to the people who have sent in plain coloured (white if possible), large (adult sized would be great) pants for our design project which is linked to our assembly. We will be using these next Friday so if anyone hasn't yet brought in some pants please can you send them in before then? The activity involves dye so if you are worried about your child getting any dye on their clothes please do send in an old shirt or long sleeved apron for them to wear during the activity on Friday. We have aprons in school but they are not long sleeved and accidents do occasionally happen!

In maths this week we have been remembering our adding, subtracting, number bonds, multiplication and division in a set of challenges designed to see what the children are able to recall from lessons last half term. They did amazingly well!. Next week we will be looking at weights and measures.

We don't have a growth mindset award or star writer this week, but we would like to mention Ava, who brought in a note today telling us about the maths games she has done at home, counting coins. We have put Ava's note on our 'Maths Boast Board' and if anyone else would like to bring in a note or picture of maths games that they have been doing at home we will add them to the board too!

Finally, we don't believe every child picked up a spelling sheet toady. More will be sent out on Monday. The week 1 spellings are:

    their

    square

    pear

    wear

    compared

    chair

    fair

    WOW WORD - pirate

All children should have new Newsletters and Homework Grids but if you do not have one please do feel free to pop into the classroom to get one next week. We also still have the Maths Assessments from last half term which you are welcome to come and collect from Mrs Mylrea on Thursday or Friday. They are really handy for seeing what your child may need support with, and of course to see how brilliantly they are doing in Maths! There are merits for the children who complete any corrections!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 26th May (Mrs Manning)

Happy holiday everyone! The children certainly deserve a nice break, they have been working (and playing!) hard in class 1 this half term! The children have loved their Amazing Animals topic, complete with trip to Knowsley, but there is even more fun in store for the children when we begin our final topic in year 1 - PESKY PIRATES!

As part of the Pirates topic there will me multiple occasions (including the Class Assembly, which promises to be a spectacular event!) when your child will be asked to wear a pirate costume. If your child has a pirate costume, or if you would be able to pull one together, we would be very grateful indeed if you could have it ready for your child to bring into school. There will be several opportunities for your child to wear it so it will not go to waste! If you are not able to get hold of a pirate costume please don't worry, just let Mrs Manning or Mrs Mylrea know.

Also, we'd like to remind everyone about our plea last week......please can you provide a large pair of white or pale coloured pants (preferably boxer shorts but don't worry if not) for a craft activity we will be undertaking? Adult size pants or large children's would be ideal (but again, please just send in what you can).

Last week in maths we carried out an assessment to see where the children are up to in terms of what we need to have covered by the end of the year. We are so pleased with the amount they have learned, but more importantly, how much they have retained and are able to apply independently. Well done class1! After half term the marked quiz papers will be available for you to take home and to look at with your child should you wish. There are comments on each paper and there are corrections that the children can have a go at doing as well. This is informative for both you and your child, and the children will love showing off to you what they are capable of in maths. Talking through the questions that they found difficult will really help your child as well (this is something we also do as a class). Please ask Mrs Mylrea for your child's paper if you wish to take it home.

In the week after half term the children will take their phonics screening test. We have done lots of preparation with the children, but because of the long half term break it would be really helpful if you could try and practice the children's phonics with them at home so they don't forget all the hard work that they have done! Reading is a great way to practice for the test, as well as looking over the resources we have sent home in the past.

Apps that we have recommended in the past (like Hairy Phonics, etc) are a fun way to practice phonics too. And the children love playing the free games on http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/

There are also some great phonics songs on YouTube which the children really enjoy, such as:

    'When 2 Vowels go Walking'

'Magic E Song' by KidsTV 123

'Silent E Song' by The Preschool Prep Company.

This week our growth mindset award went to Hugh.

    Our star writer was Jess.

    Well done Hugh and Jess!

Have a lovely holiday, and we will see you in June!

From Mrs Mylrea, Mrs Manning and Mrs Burney

  • Friday 19th May (Mrs Manning)

What a fantastic week we have had in Year 1!

We had a visit from a very special Bishop from Uganda and had some really interesting questions for him. The visit inspired some truly awesome writing from our children, and it was no surprise to see from their writing that the things that most intreagued them were that Ugandan homes have no electricity (no TVs or iPads!) and that Ugandan children help to clean the school after the working day is over!  We found out so much about Uganda, try asking your children what they learned!

This half term in RE we have been finding out about the Jewish holy day that is called Shabbat. The children have been finding out about Jewish traditions and writing prayers that might be read at a Friday night family Shabbat dinner. The prayers were really beautiful, giving thanks for all of the wonderful people and great things in their lives. Next week we hope to recreate a Shabbat dinner with candles, bread and grape juice, to think more carefully about how Jewish people take this time to think about God and to draw comparisons with Christian traditions.

Thank you so so much to everyone who brought in things for our bug hotels. The children had a great time (and a bit of a messy time - sorry!) making their hotels. Over the past four weeks we have talked a lot about microhabitats, we went out into the field and found some, and we planned exactly what we wanted to do before we actually came to make our bug hotels today. And our preparation paid off! Well done to the children for sharing the things they brouht in so nicely as well, we had an absolutely brilliant afernoon and we hope the children manage to make a home for some bugs in their bug hotels when they get home! If you would like to send in a photo of your child's bug hotel in action we'd love to see them!

After half term we have another craft project coming up. It involves...pants! So, please can we ask you to send a pair of pants (preferably a large pair of white or pale colcoured boxer shorts or other large pants) in to school during the first week back? All will become clear at our special assembly!

This week our growth mindset award went to Harry.

    Matilda was our star writer.

    Well done Matilda and Harry!

Finally, please note that the Year 1 phonics screening test will be during the first week back after half term. We fully understand how busy family life is and what a struggle it can be to fit everything in, but if you could find the time to go over the sounds we have been practicing with your child and do as much reading as you can with them, this will really make sure that they are ready and that the half term break won't stop them showing off the amazing skills they have been buildig up. If you have any questions at all about phonics, the screening test, or how to engage your child in phonics, please do pop in and let us know.

Have a wonderful weekend, we're keeping our fingers crossed for a bit of sun!

  • Friday 12th May (Mrs Manning)

This week we had our big trip to Knowsley Safari Park and the children loved it. They were beautifully behaved and learned a lot from the trip. The trip has inspired some wonderful writing already! The lions and rhinos were a particularly big hit! Hugh wrote in his letter afterwards that it was a perfect day, which was lovely to read.

In maths we have been counting forwards and backwards in tens from any number to 100 (ie - jumping down the 100 square). The children are great at counting in 10s and 1s and this week we have been refining those skills so that they can navigate around their 100 squares with confidence. They did really well! Next week we're going to be doing some quizzes to recap all that we have learned so-far so that we know what might need a bit more practice, and so we can show off what we are really good at doing on our own!

Next Friday Year 1 will be making Bug Hotels. Please can you save any plastic bottles, small/medium sized cardboard boxes, cardboard egg cartons and any other materials that may come in handy and drop them off in Class 1 next week? In particular, small lengths of bamboo, sticks and dried leaves would also be very useful!

This week our growth mindset award went to Alfie.

    Ava was our star writer.

    Well done Alfie and Ava!

  • Friday 5th May (Mrs Manning)

This week in Yeear 1 we have been investigating what animals eat and where they live. Today the children went on a microhabitat hunt in the school field to find all the places that our minibeast population have been making their homes. The children loved investigating this and finding out what conditions the insects like best. The children then each compiled a list of all the things that they would need in their habitat. As well as food, water and shelter it's safe to say that a TV or tablet, bed and a toilet featured quite high up on most of their lists too!

In maths we have been dividing using counters, times tables and a number line. The children did this wonderfully! We even had a go at putting word problems into division sums (what we call 'number sentences' in school). This is tricky but the children rose to the challenge. We also took another look at telling the time and drawing clock faces and they really do have the hang of it now. It goes to show that practice makes perfect (and I have no doubt that a little help at home has really done wonders too, so thank you!)

Next week we are going to look a partitioning numbers into tens and units again, and we will try using this to help us add big numbers.

This week our growth mindset award went to Isaac.

    Harvey was our star writer.

    Well done Harvey and Isaac!

Just a quick note about the trip next week - please could children bring a packed lunch that is fully disposable (eg - no tupperware). Also, please be aware that the children will be leaving promptly at 9am. Thank you.

  • Friday 28th April (Mrs Manning)

It's hard to believe that we are very nearly in May and the children have just one term left of being in Year 1! We hope everyone is looking forward to some sun (fingers crossed!) during this bank holiday weekend.

This week we have been busy learning about the different parts of the world that animals originate from, and finding out about the terms omnivore, carnivore and herbivore. The children are really embracing our new topic!

In Maths we had a go at measuring using centimetres and they did amazingly well! We also had another look at telling the time to half past the hour and the children found this quite tricky. Whilst they have mastered reading clock faces that show o'clock and half past, drawing 'half past' on a blank clock face is much much trickier. They have to contend with all sorts of issues, such as making sure one hand is longer than the other, and making sure the short hand is half way between the correct two numbers. It can be quite confusing for them when they also have to learn that the clock face is made up of two halves, and each number that the long hand points to represents 5 minutes. There is a lot to learn when we think about telling the time! Fun practice at home will certainly help the children become more familiar with clocks if you have a chance (although we do know how hard it is to fit everything in!)

We had a lovely assembly today to wish Mrs Morton the very best on her maternity leave. The children made beautiful cards and it was so nice to see the school celebrating our amazing head teacher.

This week's growth mindset award went to William.

    Our star writer was Oliver.

    Well done William and Oliver!

  • Friday 21st April (Mrs Manning)

    Welcome back!

***Please accept our appologies for the late posting of this blog entry. We've had a few technical problems but we're back on track now!***

We hope you had a wonderful Easter break. The children certainly have been excited to get back to school and we have got a really great topic to jump into! Our 'Amazing Animals' topic has begun, and the children will already be able to tell you all about the different classifications of animals. In fact, we had a really impressive impromptu debate today, which was led by the children, about whether a drawing we had of what appeared to be a lizard or a salamander was a reptile or an amphibian. And then another quandary arose when we discussed that a dolphin is a mammal; some of the children thought that a shark was also a mammal, and some disagreed. So we looked into it together. The children were really engaged which was fantastic!

This week in maths we have been brushing-up on our number bonds and thinking about how they can help us with super-quick addition. For example, if we know that 5 + 5 = 10, then we can easily work out 5 + 6 because it is just one more.

Next week we are going to take a look at clocks and telling the time to the hour and half hour again. We are going to have a go at measuring using cm too.

This week our growth mindset award went to Lucy.

    Alfie was our star writer.

    Well done Lucy and Alfie!

  • Friday 31st March (Mrs Manning)

What a week we have had in Year 1! We had our wonderful service at the church on Tuesday and we were very proud of the way that the children performed and presented the work we have been doing on Jesus' arrival into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Well done everyone!

This morning we had a fantastic assembly by Year 4 who told us all about their trip to Castleton and taught us all about Sir Ernest Shackleton's team and their expeditions. It was wonderful to find out what Year 4 have been learning about this term. We were also treated to an extra special assembly where we had a chance to celebrate all of the children's achievements throughout the school, and we even had a visit from some local veterans which was very special indeed.

We ended our Fairytales topic by finishing our papier mache eggs and painting them gold. We hope the children will enjoy having these at home to put things in, or just to remind them of the fantastic stories they wrote about and read this half term. We have put a little surprise into each egg as an Easter treat from us.

In maths this week the children have been doing quizzes to help them remember the skills they have learned so-far in Year 1. They did really well and should be really proud of how much they have learned. We will be using these quizzes to help us spot gaps in what the children have learned and what they are comfortable with so that next term we can fill in those gaps. They have worked so hard this term, and derserve a lovely relaxing break. If they do want to practice their maths over Easter, Sumdog is a great way to have a go at maths in a fun way. Finding doubles and halves is also something that we have touched on this term and will be talking about after the holidays, so if you are interested in doing something at home this would be a great thing to practice (using coins and putting them into piles of equal value is a brilliant way to do this).

This week our growth mindset award went to Harry.

    Our star writer was Ava.

    Well done Ava and Harry!

Have a spectacular Easter break and we'll look forward to seeing you all in a couple of weeks!

  • Friday 24th March (Mrs Manning)

What a busy week we have all had in Class 1! We absolutely loved meeting all of Year 1's grown ups and having a chance to share the amazing work Year 1 have all been doing!

As we bring our Fairytales topic to a close we had a go at re-telling the story of the Princess and the Pea. We also designed a soft, silk bed for the Princess. We started to think about speech as well in our writing and imagined what the different characters in the story might be saying to each other.

In Maths we were doubling this week and talking about near doubles (for example, 50 + 49 is very nearly 50 + 50, we just need to take away 1 at the end). We don't all know our doubles (doubling all the numbers from 1 to 10) off by heart yet as we have only just started to think about it....maybe that is a challenge the children would like to take on over the Easter holidays for next term (and remember, the 2 times table will help to make this really easy)!

The children have so many maths tools and strategies, that their mental maths is becoming so quick and they can work out even really tricky doubles themselves. Ask your children to show off how well they can double numbers, even trying 2 digit numbers if they are comfortable wth it. We have done it in class and they will love showing off to you!

Next week we will have a look at all the maths we have done this term, as well as a little look at odds and evens. Well done Matilda and Lucas for your work ranking 10th in the whole school on Sumdog, what a fantastic and fun way to practice your maths!

This week our growth mindset award went to Henry.

    Our star writer was Penny.

    Well done Henry and Penny!

  • Friday 17th March (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been very busy continuing with our Fairytales topic, which the children are realy enjoying! Things got a bit messy today as we tried using papier mache to make our own golden eggs. It was vey messy indeed! However, we hope that the finished articles will look fabulous!

We've also been using our creative skills to make some very special surprises....we hope you like them!

In maths we were using 100-squares and number lines to add 2-digit numbers. The children have practiced this throughout Year 1 so-far, and they are getting really confident doing it on their own. This is giving them great problem solving practice as well as furnishing them with tools that they can use to make mental maths easier for them in future. Some of the children thought using a 100-square was cheating! This just shows how much better they are at using these resources now, which is fantastic!

This week our growth mindset award went to Lilian.

    Our star writer was Hannah.

    Well done Lilian and Hannah!

  • Friday 10th March (Mrs Manning)

Wedding bells have been ringing this week in Class 1 and Class 2! The children had a wonderful experience at the church acting out a real fairytale wedding and learning about the vows and traditions involved in a church wedding. Well done Class 1 for making it a perfect morning!

The wedding also inspired some beautiful writing from Year 1 and we are very proud of them for really entering into the spirit of the event and embracing this in their work. They have really enjoyed the start of our new topic and we know it will continue to engage them in the coming weeks. We will be making our very own golden eggs (please do bring in any news papers you have lying around as we will need these on Friday for the start of our papier mache project). We are also continuing to learn about plants and what might have made Jack's beanstalk grow so tall.

In maths next week we will be using 100 squares and number lines to add 10s and 1s (for example, approaching 23 + 21 as 23 + 10 + 10 + 1). These are tricky skills to master but when the children do master them, they will help the children with their mental addition and will prepare them for the more tricky maths that they will encounter as they progress through the school. These really are core skills to get to grips with.

This week our growth mindset award went to Lucas.

    Our star writer was Kodie.

    Well done Lucas and Kodie!

  • Friday 3rd March (Mrs Manning)

Welcome back! We hope you all had an amazing half term break!

Class 1 have had a great start to the second half of our Spring term. We have begun our Fantastic Fairytales topic and we're sure the children will be very excited to tell you all about our class fairy and the magic beastalk in our classroom! We will shortly have a special market stall role play area too where children can practice their maths by buying and selling items from the stall, there may even be a few magic beans on offer!

It was so lovely to see so many of the children's grown-ups at our open morning this week. We hope you enjoyed seeing how the children work and the kind of work we are doing in maths. If anyone was unable to make it and would like to find out more about what we are doing in maths Mrs Mylrea would be more than happy to see people for a chat after school on any Thursday or Friday afternoons.

We have also begun our science project looking at plants. We planted cress and are excited to see how well our first plants grow! Next week we will have a go at designing an experiment to see how well sweet peas grow under different conditions.

In maths we had a go at reading and drawing clocks, showing the hour and half past the hour. The children all did really well with this and said that they like learning about telling the time at home. Next week we will be practicing multiplication of 2s, 5s and 10s and using 'x' in our number sentences (eg: 2 x 6 = 12).

Our growth mindset award went to Evie this week.

    Lily was our star writer.

    Well done Evie and Lily!

    Friday 17th February (Mrs Manning)

What a fabulous half tertm we have had in Class1! We hope that the chidren have had lots to tell you about at home. We have been looking back over the work the children have done since Christmas and we couldn't be more proud, they certainly deserve a nice week off!

Today we made some gorgeous colourful bird feeder/wind chimes. They are looking forward to filling them with seed and finding places to hang them after half term when the glue has dried. The children really loved this activity.

This week in Maths we have been going back over halves and quarters because it was something that the children initially found very tricky. We were so proud to see that they are now really getting to grips with it and remembered the methods we talked about before: sharing out counters equally to work out the answer; using our 2 times table to find halves; and, halving halves to find quarters. Well done everyone!

When we come back after half term we will have another look at fractions to see what we have remembered and we will also start looking at 'o'clock' and 'half past' for telling the time.

The children have done some stunning writing this half term and are really enjoying their growing independence with writing and the creativity that this can give rise to. Reading for pleasure helps immeasurably with the children's writing and phonics (being read to is really beneficial as well). We love hearing about what the children are reading at home!

Please do also take a look at Sumdog, the chidren love it and it's a great way to keep practicing their maths.

This week our star writer was Luca.

Our growth mindset award went to Gracie.

    Well done Gracie and Luca.

Have a fabulous half term everyone!

This week we have had a lot of fun learning about the weather and even did our own weather reports. The childen are doing so well with their writing, it is so lovely to see. We have also been doing some lovely crafts as part of two separate whole-school projects which everyone will be able to see soon!

We were treated to a lovely performance by the Year 5 brass intrument players and we were so impressed! We are so lucky to be part of such a musical school! The children played the 'Eye of the Tiger' for us and we were amazed by how well they all played their different instruments together.

In maths this week we have been finding out about 1/2 and 1/4. We looked at shapes as well as amounts. It was super tricky and we will be returning to it in a week's time. In the meantime, next week we will be taking some time to look back on what we have learned so-far in Year 1 and identifying anything that we need to spend some more time on. We will also be investigating capacity and how we might be able to measure rainfall.....something that will come in very handy at this time of year!

In the last week of term we will be doing a mini design and technology project to make a super bird feeder. We would be grateful if the children could save any yoghurt pots from home as they may come in handy!

This week our growth mindset award went to Matilda.

Our Star Writer was Millie H.

    Well done Millie and Matilda!

  • Friday 27th January (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have really got stuck in to our new topic 'Whatever the Weather!' We have learned about the seasons and how the weather changes from season to season. We have also been thinking about the purposes of different materials, which will help us when we start to think about designing our own weather proof item very shortly!

In maths we have been practicing using a number line, and have got to grips with using 'counting on' for adding. It makes things much easier when you don't need to start from 1 each time, and we used some really big numbers, which we could not have done if we were counting on our fingers. We even had a go at taking away using a number line and adding 10s using a hundred square. Next week in maths we will be learning about halves and quarters of shapes and of amounts.

Next week we will be participating in a school-wide art project and our class will be asked to use the colour orange. If you have any collage items like buttons, pompoms, bits of fabric....anything really..... that are coloured orange please do bring it in! We would be very grateful indeed!

This week our star writerwas Abigail.

Our Growth Mindset award went to Kai.

    Wel done Abi and Kai!

  • Friday 20th January (Mrs Manning)

This week in Year 1 we have started our new topic which is called 'Whatever the Weather!' The children have been writing weather reports and have been learning about weather symbols. We have also been thinking about how we can prepare for different types of weather with what we wear. The children did some marvellous drama and movement linked to going to school on a snowy day and building a snowman (inspired by last week's snow!)

Next week we will start to think about how to measure rainfall. It would be great if the children could come up with some ideas!

In maths we have been partitioning two digit numbers and the children were absolutely amazing. They did really well with this very tricky concept. Next week we will be practicing adding and taking away by counting on and back....being extra careful not to start from 1 each time. We will use number lines and then we will have a go without. We will also think about counting up the number lines in 2s and 5s.

Just as a quick reminder, please can you make sure that your child brings in their PE kit and, where possible, that there are names in their clothes so that your child doesn't go home with the wrong items!

The children are doing so well with their phonics, and to support their hard work at home we recommend two apps which are great for practicing those tricky sounds. They are:

    1. Hairy Phonics 1, 2 and 3; and

    2. Forest Phonics.

This week our star writer was Penny.

Our Growth Mindset award went to Zac.

    Well done Penny and Zac!

  • Friday 13th January (Mrs Manning)

Welcome back, and Happy New Year! We would all like to say a very big thank you for all the very kind Christmas presents and cards that you all brought in before Christmas, it was very kind of you and meant an awful lot to us. We hope you had a magical Christmas.

What a fabulous week we have had during our first week back at school in 2017! It has been a very special Poetry Week at All Saints. In Class 1 we have been focussing on poems about the seasons and we wrote our very own repetition poem about Autumn. We swapped classes on Thursday morning and wrote a poem to a piece of pop music with children from different classes mixing together. We were lucky enough to have a visit from a poet which the children really enjoyed. We also loved watching Michael Rosen perform his 'Chocolate Cake' poem which can be viewed on his website and on Youtube. Michael Rosen's website is full of fantastic poetry to look at at home.

We had an amazing poetry competition today where groups from each class got to perform a poem. Our class were fabulous! We choase 'Now we are 6', 'Popcorn' and 'Frog' and had a lot of fun performing these for everyone. Well done Class 1!

This week in Maths we have been counting in 2s, trying to work out how many gloves each child would need in different numbered groups of children. It was tricky! Then we were helping Harris Hedgehog count his nuts which he had put into piles of 10. The children are becomming more and more confident counting in 2s and 10s, we're sure that they will be very excited to show off their skills to you at home.

Next week we will be having a go at partitioning tens and ones, and working with place value.

Please note that there is a new Homework Grid in the children's homework books. Sheets to support homework are in the classroom as usual.

We hope you have a lovely and safe weekend in the snow!

  • Friday 16th December (Mrs Manning)

What an amazing week we have had in Year 1! We performed our Nativity at the church and everyone was so impressed. Year 1 and Year 2 did an absolutely amazing job and we are so so proud of each and every one of the children. Well done! And, we'd like to say another big thank you to all the grown ups at home who provided such wonderful costumes and practiced lines and songs. Thank you!

Next week we have our trip to see the Nativity at Chatsworth Farm Yard. It is set to be a truly magical day out for the children. Please ensure that your child brings wellies or warm weather boots, and a warm coat with a hood as they will be outside for most of the day.

It is also our Christmas party next week and we'd like to remind everyone that the children need to bring in their party clothes in a bag for Monday.

We won' be setting homework over Christmas but we will give out an optional maths activity booklet. It is not compulsory, and we won't be collecting them in. They are just for the children to have if they would like to keep flexing those maths muscles during the holidays! And of course, there is also Sumdog!

This week our Growth Mindset award went to Gracie Mae.

Our star writer this week was Kaiden.

    Well done Gracie and Kaiden!

  • Friday 9th December (Mrs Manning)

What a fantastic week Class 1 have had! The children loved having their Christmas dinner served by all of the staff, pulling crackers and listening to party music. It was lovely to see so many families join the fun. And there will be another chance for everyone to enter into the All Saints Christmas spirit this weekend at our Christmas Fair. Look out for our Christmas Ribbon Sparkle Bags!

In Maths this week we were taking single digit numbers away from double digit numbers using a 100 Square to help us. It was super tricky but the children did really well. We also made two digit numbers by adding 10s and 1s; we played a game with dice to do this, rolling the 10s number first and then the 1s number, I'm sure the children would love to show everyone at home how they did it!

There will be a holiday Maths activity booklet available for those who want it in the last week of term. Please do let Mrs Mylrea know if you would like one for your child.

This week our growth mindset award went to Evie.

    Our star writer was Hugh.

    Well done Evie and Hugh!

  • Friday 2nd December (Mrs Manning)

Thank you so much to everyone for bringing in treats for the Christmas Fair! We are getting very excited about it and will be working on some fabulous things to sell at the fair next week.

This week we have been writing about Sprout Boy. Watching his story has inspired some truly amazing writing. It is wonderful to see the progress that the children have made in such a short time since joining Year 1. Well done everyone we are so proud of you!

In maths we have been dividing by 2, using pictures and number lines to help us. The children were fantastic at jumping backwards in 2s on the number line, and then totting up the jumps to find the answer. Next week we will be practicing taking away, and partitioning 10s and 1s.

This week our growth mindset award went to Kodie.

Our star writer was Martha L.

    Well done!

  • Friday 25th November (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class1 we have had a busy time investigating our local area as part of our topic 'Santa Clause is coming to Marple'. We can hardly believe it will be December next week! Our topic has really engaged the children and fed their interest in finding out all about where they live. The trip to Marple Library was a wonderful way to connect the children's learning to their local area and we hope the children enjoyed it.

In maths this week we have been measuring using standard units. Next week we will be thinking about dividing between two.....Rudolf and Blitzen want all of the carrots for themselves but they need to learn to share, so Class 1 are going to help them!

We have been practicing our songs and dances for our Christmas production and the children are really loving it. We hope you do too!

In science we have been designing a new super-sack for Santa to carry all the presents in. The children have been finding out about the different qualities of various materials. We decided his new super-sack needs to be strong, flexible and waterproof. Eddie suggested that it needed to be transparent as well so that Santa could see which present he needed to get out. What a great idea!

This week our Growth Mindset award went to Oliver.

Our Star Writer this week was Lucy.

    Well done Lucy and Oliver!

  • Friday 18th November (Mrs Manning)

    Hello!

What a great week we have had in Year 1! The children have done such a lot of impressive writing, it has been so wonderful to see the progress that they have all made since the beginning of the year. Well done everyone! Next week we will be visiting the library, and will hopefully find lots of interesting things to inspire us in our writing too.

In Maths we have been using 100 Squares to help us take away single digit numbers from double digit numbers. We've also used number lines to find the answer to missing number questions making 10 and 20.The children are really getting to grips with using these fantastic tools! Well done Year 1! If you would like to use a 100 Square for games at home there is one available here (the children love playing 'Splat' with it!) : http://www.primarygames.co.uk/pg2/splat/splatsq100.html

Next week in Maths we will be measuring using standard units (like bricks, and then moving on to centimeters).

We have started to get very crafty in preparation for December when everyone will be putting up their Christmas trees. We've also started practicing our songs for our Christmas production.

This week's growth mindset award went to Martha S.

This week's star writer was Harry

    Well done Martha and Harry!

Have a lovely weekend everyone, see you next week!

  • Blog for Friday 4 November (Mrs Manning)

    Hello!

Here is the blog for 4 November which unfortunately did not post properly!

The post for 11 November was reposted earlier this week under the title 'Weekly Blog'. This week's blog will be posted as usual.

    Best wishes,

    Mrs Mylrea

    *************************

    Welcome back!

We hope you had an amazing half term! It was lovely to see the children so excited to come back to school, and they certainly have an exciting rest of the Autumn term ahead of them. We have started our new topic: 'Santa Claus is coming to Marple'. We have started off with thinking about questions we would ask about Marple's history, and we will be investigating how to create and use maps of our local area to help us get around. We are also going to think about matrials and we have some exciting design projects in the pipe line....watch this space!

In Maths we have encountered a very disorganised man called 'Marvin of Marple' who has been tasked with arranging this year's Christmas festival and celebrations around Marple. But unfortunately, Marvin is not very good at Maths so we have had so sort out a whole host of problems for him this week. The children used their fantastic number bonds skills to help him this week. Next week we are going to do some more work with coins, and also counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

This week's growth mindset award went to Millie H, well done Millie!

Our Star Writer was Lucy, well done Lucy!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  • Weekly blog (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been very busy. In literacy we wrote some amazing letters and we also took some time to think about Remembrance. We honoured the two minutes silence on Friday and the children were very respectful as we thought about all that our service men and women do, and have done, for us.

In R.E. we talked about the Nativity story and had a go at retelling it. In the coming weeks we will be thinking about the gifts that were given to Jesus and why we give gifts.

The Children are really enjoying finding out all about Marple as part of our topic. If you ask them, they may surprise you with something that you didn't know about the local area!

In Maths the children are getting really confident with their number bonds to 5 and 10. We have a song that we love to sing to help us practice our number bonds to 10. Just ask the children to tell you about Farmer Pete.......!

Well done Eddie for receiving our class Growth Mindset award this week!

Well done Luca for being star writer!

  • Friday 21st October (Mrs Manning)

Well done Year 1 for an amazing Church Week!

This week we have been celebrating Church Week and members from the parish have been helping us. Year 1 have especially enjoyed the workshops, learning the Conkers song and making a fabulous shield which was displayed during the church service.

Abigail said she liked doing the actions to The Lord's Prayer hymn; I think all of the children enjoyed this. We had special songs performed by Classes 2, 5 and 6 and they were brilliant. We enjoyed watching these great performances and cheering for our friends.

This week our Star Writer was Martha S, and Harvey received our growth mindset award. Well done you two!

The children have had a very busy first half term and must be ready for a break! We are very excited to start our new topic 'Father Christmas is coming to Marple' when we come back after half term.

    Have a fabulous week everyone!

  • Friday 14th October (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been preparing for Church Week, and carrying on our RE topic, by thinking about the gift of light. The chidren all agreed that light makes us feel safe but it also guides us in the dark. The children made some lovely pictures showing how light keeps us safe. The children are looking forward to Church Week and were thinking about their first Church Week last year when they were in Reception. Martha said "I like it when we all go to Church because it is quiet and you can think and pray if you like, and I like that."

In Maths last week we counted in 10s. This week we had a go at counting in 2s and 5s as well. It was super-tricky but the children are really getting the hang of it! We used piles of 2p coins to help us count in 2s, and this is a great way to do it if you want to practice at home. Ava said that she likes to count 2p coins at home and she taps each coin twice with her finger to help her count. What a great idea Ava!

The children did some amazing writing about their trip to Beeston Castle, they even wrote on castle shaped paper. All of the writing was fantastic, and Hannah was given Star Writer this week. Well done Hannah!

This week Millie was given the growth mindset award for being a fantastic resilient learner, well done Millie!

Finally, we played team games in P.E. on Friday and the children really entered into the spirit of competition! However, as Lily said "it is nice to win but I was happy for my friends when they won too." Well done Class 1 for being such a fabulous class and for supporting each other!

  • Friday 7th October (Mrs Manning)

This week the children in Class 1 have done some truly amazing writing. We are so proud of them! They wrote all about the Queen's Knickers using fantastic descriptions. And we saw some beautiful handwriting too. Well done everyone, you did a fabulous job!

We did our first scientific experiment this week, using water and three different materials to work out what 'waterproof' means and which materials are waterproof. As Lucas explained, water stays on top of the waterproof materials but the water is absorbed by the materials that are not waterproof. Great work everyone!

We have been also been using coins to help us count in tens and ones to make teen numbers in Maths. The Queen wanted us to buy back all of the things that the King sold in our Maths lesson last week. We managed to find the correct coins to buy back all of her treasures using 10p and 1p coins. The children experimented with putting 1p coins into piles of 10 to count them more easily too. Next week we are going to have a go at counting in 2s and 5s as well.

    Well done Class 1!

  • Friday 30th September (Mrs Manning)

This week Class 1 went on their trip to Beeston Castle and what a great trip they had! The children had a fantastic time exploring and finding out about the settlement. The children pretended to fire arrows through the arrow slits and even tried on a real helmet. Well done Class 1 for such a great trip, we hope you enjoyed it too!

We have also been carrying out an investigation in Class 1. We have been asking ourselves 'what is the best material to make the King's new crown with?' This week we were thinking about hard materials and soft materials. Next week we will be doing some experiments to find out about waterproof materials too.

And we have been working on a very special surprise for our grown ups this Christmas...... we hope you like them!

It has been a very busy week this week and we are sure the children must be exhausted! They have made such a wonderful start to Year 1 this half term and are really embracing our Kings and Queens topic, well done Year 1!

Finally, I (Mrs Mylrea) want to say a big sorry! I didn't give out the homework books on Friday afternoon. Mrs Manning will hand them out on Monday.

    Have a lovely weekend!

  • Friday 23rd September (Mrs Manning)

What a fantastic week Year 1 have had this week!

We had a wonderful vistor this week who told us the story of The Queen's Hat. The children even had a chance to act out the story, and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Evie said it was "amazing", Lucas said he enjoyed pretending to be Big Ben, and Harry loved being the Lion in Trafalgar Square. All the children had a fabulous experience. Well done Class 1!

And of course, the children welcomed their grown ups into our classroom for the open morning. It was so lovely to meet so many parents and to have a chance to chat about the work the children have been doing. The children loved it too. When we asked the children how they felt having all those adults in their classroom they came up with the words "amazing", "lovely" and "exciting" to describe the experience.

Next week the children will be going on their trip, we are so excited and we hope the children are too! And in Maths we will be thinking about shapes and symmetry, hopefully the King will be able to find a symmetrical crown!

    Have a lovely weekend!

  • Friday 16th September (Mrs Manning)

This week in Year 1 we have had a fabulous time learning all about King and Queens as we started our new topic this week. We did some very impressive writing, and we looked at the family trees of King Henry VIII and Elizabeth II and even had a go at making our own family trees! Our trees all looked wonderful and showed all the people (and pets!) who are special to us.

In R.E. we have been talking about Creation and we thought about the things we have made and how we would want everyone to keep them safe. We loved hearing all about everyones creations! The children said that making things at home and at school made them feel really proud and happy!

In maths we have been finding different ways to make 5 and 10. We even tried singing a number bonds song about Farmer Pete. The children said that they wanted to get really quick at their number bonds to they could all sing along!

This week we read 'The Queen's Hat' by Steve Anthony, and 'Katie in London' by James Mayhew. The children loved these books, and enjoyed hearing about all the attractions in London. Lilian said "London is my favourite place in the world!"

    Well done Class 1!

  • Friday 9th September (Mrs Manning)

    Welcome to Year 1!

What a fantastic start we have made to Year 1! The children have had a wonderful International Week. We have learned about Polish Christmas traditions, the foods people eat in Egypt, and how children in Kenya have different daily lives to us. We really enjoyed reading 'Masai and I' by Virginia Kroll, and 'For you are a Kenyan Child' by Kelly Cunnane. We have also made pyramids and African animal masks, as well as reading The Gingerbread Man story in Spanish. We have had a very busy week!

We've also had some wonderful assemblies by guests who have come to visit our school. We especially enjoyed playing Simon Says in Japanese!

Hannah says "I've really enjoyed doing safari maths!"

Evie says "I loved writing about the Gingerbread Man story, it ws good reading it in English and Spanish."

Harry says "I enjoyed learning about Egypt and the Pyramids."

Gracie said she loved the Portugese dance done by Year 5 in Assembly, she said she was impressed by how fast it was!

Well done for a fabulous first week back everyone!

From Mrs Mylrea and Mrs Manning

  • Class 1 (allsaints-pri Admin)

    Welcome to Class 1

Mrs Manning, Mrs Mylrea & Mrs Burney look forward to welcoming you all in September

  • Thursday 28th July (Mrs Manning)

Well here we are - the very last day of Year 1 and what a sensational year the children have had.  I am unbelievably proud of each one of them and all they have achieved, both academically and in their confidence.  I feel very blessed to have taught such a lovely class of children and will miss them greatly as they move into year 2.  Thank you class 1 for a truly wonderful year together.

Thank you also to all the parents!  You have been so interested and supportive in your children's learning and it has been a real pleasure to get to know you over the year.  I hope that everyone has a wonderful summer and I can't wait to hear all the children's stories in September!

This week we have had a lovely week, making cards, writing about what we are going to be doing in the holidays, writing letters to Miss Vesey as she sadly leaves us today and having lots of fun together.  A really lovely way to end the term...thank you Class 1!

  • Friday 22nd July (Mrs Manning)

I find it unbelievable that I am sat writing the blog for the final week of the children being in Class 1.  I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to the children and their families for all the enthusiasm, dedication, hard work and patience that has been shown over the past year.  Your children are an absolute joy and a credit to each one of you and I have truly loved teaching them and will miss them greatly as they start their new adventure in class 2.

On that note, this week the children have enjoyed a session in their new classroom with Mrs Noble, which, as I am sure you can imagine...they loved!  We will be doing this again next week to aid the transition between year groups and to make sure that your little ones feel familiar and safe with their new surroundings.

Back in Class 1 we have been budding artists; drawing Mellor Mill and creating our very own family crests.  We have been doing lots of reading of our class text, the BFG as we desperately try to finish it before we break up!

Last week for homework - some that we have had this week have been sensational! Something off your grid please and lots of reading would be lovely!  Have a wonderful weekend - fingers crossed for some more sun!

  • Friday 15th July (Mrs Manning)

This week in class 1 we have had the most exciting week! On Tuesday afternoon we were lucky enough to go (for free!) to the dig at Samuel Oldknow's home down by the Roman Lakes!  We had the best time and Jude's favourite bit was digging.  He said he thinks he found something from the roof!

We have also been working really hard on our literacy and maths this week, working out how Samuel could halve and quarter the produce from his gardens and writing up a recount of our trip!  We have made some lovely thank you cards for people who helped us with the walking and the digging and we have also written application forms to be an apprentice at the mill.

Another highlight of this week has been our singing schools concert.  It was so lovely to see so many families there and as always I was exceedingly proud of my wonderful class.

Homework this week will be reading, something off your grid and handwriting if you feel your child needs it - ready for joining in year 2!

  • Thursday 30th June (Mrs Manning)

This week kicked off with our French Day which the children adored - especially the French food! I think croissants and chocolate spread are a new favourite!
We have been continuing to learn all about Oldknow and have made our own mills complete with real wheels - the children thought the motors were magical!  I was really impressed with the children's teamwork and co-operation and the mills were a fabulous testament to this.
We have been working out how much the materials to make a mill would cost using our multiplication and addition skills and have looked at the shapes that were used in the mill.

Next week for our walk to church on Tuesday please remember sensible shoes and your apprentice costumes - letters sent home on Friday!  If this is too short notice please note we have some spares in school!

Homework this week will be something from your grid, spellings and lots of reading!

  • Friday 24th June (Mrs Manning)

Well what a wonderful Active Week we have had in class 1! We have learned all about the country of Italy, the children's highlight of course being making their very own pitta bread pizzas!
I was so proud of their resilience and risk taking in this - cutting was a difficulty for lots of them but they kept trying and their pizzas were masterpieces!
We have done all manner of things this week and the children's passports are full so please bring in any sponsor money that they have raised - they really do deserve it! From an inflatable obstacle course to sports day, dancing to martial arts we truly have had a wonderful week!

Homework this week is something from your grid - in the rush of our Phonics Party homework books are still in class - please forgive me! They will be handed on Monday but we will totally understand any late hand in's so please don't worry if the weekend is your homework time!

  • Thursday 16th June (Mrs Manning)

We have had a great first week back in year 1, with so much to celebrate! The children have thrown themselves into their new topic of Samuel Oldknow and have loved playing with all the old toys!
I have been so proud of all the children after completing their phonics screening check - they all did me so proud and to celebrate we are going to have a little party next Friday afternoon so please pack your child's best party clothes, some party food to share and anything else that might make our party go with a bang!
Please also keep your eye out for small cardboard boxes that we can use to create mills out of.  If those could be brought in as soon as possible that would be wonderful!
Homework this week will be something new from your grid, spellings and lots of reading - keep it up even though you are reading ssuperstars!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  • Thursday 26th May (Mrs Manning)

How quickly this half term has flown by!  I cannot believe that when we come back after the holidays I will be starting my last half term with my wonderful class.  I know that you are aware that in the first week back the children will have their National Phonics Screening check - and I know that they will shine.  I have no doubt that all my children will try their absolute hardest and will show off all that they have learned this year - every single one of them has made progress and I cannot wait for them to have the opportunity to show everyone what wonderful readers they are!

I will put online some of the phonics screening check past tests for you to have a look at with your child.  I am not sending homework over the holidays but please, please do lots of reading with your little one - little and often every day will make sure that they keep all those sounds firmly in their minds!

This week we have been lucky enough to have Miss Nelson teaching us singing, we have shone in all the assessments that the children have completed and we have even had time to fit in carrying on our novel ,the BFG, which the children are completely loving!

Thank you for all your support this half term - we are so lucky to have such wonderful supportive parents.

On the first day back please could the children bring in a small toy of their choice ready for our science experiment on materials - don't worry - all will remain in perfect condition!

  • Friday 20th May (Mrs Manning)

One Ted Falls Out of Bed has been our Julia Donaldson text for this week and we have produced some wonderful work, including a very artistic balloon, some word problems, some missing number problems all linked to toys, a beautiful story about their toy going on a woodland adventure and we even managed to fit in a game of Rounders - which the children seemed to love!

As we move towards the final half term and considering our topic is Astounding Authors we have also started to read the BFG by Roald Dahl.  The children seem hooked already which I am really pleased about!

Next week we will be completing our final Summer assessments - again, as always, nothing to worry about.  The children have really enjoyed their assessments in the past so it won't feel any different to a normal, fun, happy day at school!

I'm sure you are all aware that we only have one more week in school before the week of the Phonics Screening Check when we return after the holidays.  Please make sure, if you can, you are going over and over the words that I have posted on the website, especially the more recent ones as these include the more difficult graphemes to remember.  We are still finding that children are trying to make Alien words into real words which as competent readers we completely understand but please just reiterate as we do in school that when they see an alien on the card it doesn't need to make any sense, just be read phonetically!  Thank you for all your work with your little ones at home - I am constantly amazed by how well their reading is progressing!

Homework this week will be the last choice from your gird, learning your new spellings and also lots of reading!

Have a wonderful weekend and I will see everyone next week for what at All Saints' we like to call 'Show Off Week' - they really do have so much to show off....they are amazing!

  • Friday 13th May (Mrs Manning)

This week in class 1 we have been reading and completing work based around ‘The Scarecrows Wedding’.

The children have had so much creativity this week; making split pin scarecrows, creating beautiful illustrations and even timing eachother making lolly stick scarecrows.  They have also completed a big write, rewriting the story of the wedding.  I am seeing a big improvement in the spelling of those red words so thank you for all the reading at home – it really does pay off!

Please keep this up as the phonics screening check approaches; especially words with those tricky graphemes such as split digraphs, soft c sound, ire and are.

On Monday we would like the children to bring in a toy to put on our display.  This will form the basis of their writing next week.  Please make sure that the toy isn’t breakable and that it is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Homework this week will be something from your grid, handwriting if appropriate and lots and lots and lots of reading!

  • Thursday 5th May (Mrs Manning)

What a wonderful time we had on Tuesday morning creating our very own Stick Men and his shelter in the outdoor area! Thank you so much for sending in wellies - they were much needed after all the rain!
I was absolutely blown away by the children'ss teamwork during this activity -- they are an absolute credit to All Saints' and make me proud constantly.

Not only have we created stick men and shelters but we have also been measuring sticks, writing the story of stick man, looking at a map of where he might live, finding out halves of numbers linked to Stick Lady Love being left all alone and have even completed some dictation - Class 1 are so grown up!

Homework this week will be something off your grid, learning your new spellings and lots and lots of reading - phonics screening is only a month or so away so keep reminding the children of the different ways that phonemes can be written!

  • Friday 29th April (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 it has felt like we were back under the sea as our text this week has been 'The Singing Mermaid'.

The children have completed lots of missing number problems linked to the circus that the mermaid is whisked off to, they have written a letter home in character as the mermaid and have looked closely at the illustrator Lydia Monks and painted a watercolour picture in this style.  I was completely blown away by the artwork they produced for this and they should feel very proud.

Next week we move onto a well known favourite, even more so since the adaptation on the BBC at Christmas time, 'Stick Man'.  Should the weather be beautiful this bank holiday weekend I am told there is a wonderful stick man trail at Delamere forest that has wonderful reviews!

Homework this week as always is as much reading as you can manage - try our challenge of seeing how many words you can read in a minute and record in your reading record.  Also remember that children can record their views on their stories in their records too, not just grown ups!  I completely love reading all your comments and value them so much so a big thank you for all those reading records that are bursting at the seams!

Try to complete something off your grid and remember to learn your spellings for our test next week.  If you would like handwriting for this half term (we don't give it out to everyone so as not to overload with too much homework!) please just ask me and I will send you home the Summer term pack!

Have a wonderful long weekend everybody.

    Friday 22nd April (Mrs Manning)

It has been a real joy to welcome the children back to school this week and so lovely to hear of so many library visits in the holidays to choose some Julia Donaldson stories.  Thank you so much for letting the children bring in their favourite Julia stories to share - please remember to put names in them - stories are very precious and we don't want to lose any!

This week our focus has been the Gruffalo (and the naughty mouse who steals the acorns!) We have used this scenario to complete missing number problems such as 14 - ? = 6.  These have proved exciting and challenging for the children and could maybe be something that your little one could show you at home to really consolidate the concept.

We have been writing our own Gruffalo stories and have been describing and creating our own 'terrible creature' to feature in them! I am so proud of how well the children's writing is coming on - they are working so very hard!

Homework this week will be something off the new grid (posted on the website), new spellings are being sent home today and lots of reading.  Please have a look on the class page for some words that will really help your child in the run up to phonics screening check - I have just put up some new ones which contain some of the more complex sounds that due to the new curriculum the children are now required to know.  Thank you for all the work you do at home - it really does show.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Class 1 for the amazing amount of enthusiasm we have seen over the course of our dinosaur topic.  It really has made it a total joy to teach and we hope that the next topic will harbour as much excitement for the children as this one has.  We are pleased to announce that our next topic will be 'Astounding Authors' and the author that we have chosen is Julia Donaldson so please read as many of her wonderful stories as you can over the holidays!

The children have loved their last week of term; it has included their ice cream party this afternoon, their achievement assembly this morning (in which I was bursting with pride to learn that every single child in my class received a Behaviour Award) and we have played our new game, the Class 1 Quiz many times over the past few days!

Tyler says that her favourite part of the dinosaur topic has been playing in the dinosaur museum - a real hit with all the children!

As always there will be no homework over the holidays although can I please remind you that lots of words are on our class page in order to practise for the Phonics Screening Check coming up in June.  I would love to hear of all the reading your little ones have done over the next two weeks in preparation to become amazing authors next half term!

Thank you for all of your continued support over the last half term - it really has been a pleasure.

    Have a wonderful holidays!

  • Thursday 24th March (Mrs Manning)

Well I need to start by saying a huge thank you to the parents and granparents that came in to class this morning to see your little superstars in action!  The children were so excited to see you there and I was, as always, immensely proud of their superb behaviour and attitude to this change in routine!

We have had the most exciting week in Class 1 this week; our trip to Church to the Easter Encounter being a particular highlight!  The week also saw Rex, our resident T-Rex friend, reinstated to his rightful place in Class 1 in response to the children writing heartfelt letters asking for his return - I am sure they will fill you in on the details of the story!

Have a wonderful Easter break and I can't wait to see all the children for our final dinosaur week.
Homework will be the usual; spellings, reading books and something off your grid!

  • Friday 18th March (Mrs Manning)

We have had a lovely week in Year 1; writing about the day that the dinosaur came to school, doing lots of halving and doubling, some dinosaur word problems and have even planted our broad bean seeds ready to watch them grow as Spring rolls around!

Maybe over the weekend the children could look out for some signs of Spring and make a note of them ready to discuss over the coming weeks!

This week has also been assessment week and as always we have been amazed at the children's maturity, resilience and attitude towards their tests!  They have all put in so much effort and have wored so very hard - well done class 1 - you make me very proud!

Homework this week will be something from your grid and practising spellings ready for next week's test (on Thursday due to being off school on Good Friday)
Please also keep practising your tricky red word spellings on the week that you don't have a spelling test - they will help so much in reading and writing!

Many thanks and have a wonderful weekend!

  • Friday 11th March (Mrs Manning)

Well even though it has been a short week this week we have still managed to pack it full of exciting and challenging activities for the children!
Yesterday the children had to work out the times that the dinosaurs would eat their tea at - we are looking at the hour, half past and even stretched the children to looking at quarter past - perhaps over the weekend challenge your child to see if they can tell you the time!

We have been reading lots of dinosaur stories and the children have been telling me what the different dinosaurs can do on different days of the week.  I have been so proud of how well the children have risen to the challenge of spelling the days of the week - it is a joy to hear children chanting 'wed-nes-day' as they are writing!

Next week is assessment week in school but as always in year 1 it is very low key and the children won't be under any pressure at all; we promise to make things as fun and enjoyable as they are every week!  If you have any concerns at all please do pop in and see me; my door is always open.

Have a wonderful weekend everybody.  Homework this week will be new spellings, something off your dinosaur grid and lots of reading -  reading book time is honestly one of my favourite times of the week. Reading your comments about your child's learning at home is a joy so thank you so much for all the time that you spend writing comments - they are truly appreciated.

  • Friday 26th February (Mrs Manning)

What a week we have had to kick start our Dinosaur Topic!
I have been blown away by the children's knowledge, learning and most of all enthusiasm they have shown during this first week!
We have been lucky enough to have been visited by 'Dinosaur Mike', a dino expert who brought in real fossils for the children to handle - certainly the highlight of the week!
He has written a blog about our school which can be found here:

    http://blog.everythingdinosaur.co.uk/blog/_archives/2016/02/24/class-one-and-class-two-study-dinosaurs.html

It is well worth a look - the children are thrilled to be 'famous'!

Another highlight for the children has been learning the 'Storybots' songs.  This is a free website packed full of dinosaur information, but also great for learning catchy songs for seasons, days of the week, months of the year, shape, letters and much more!

We hope that you love the new homework grid for dinosaurs - the children seem very excited and I know we will have some fabulous homeworks from such a stimulating topic!
Therefore, homework will be something from the grid, spellings go out tonight too and lots of reading please!  I absolutely love reading your comments in reading records, please carry on recording as much as you can - it really does give a great insight into how they are reading at home.  Thank you!

  • Friday 12th February (Mrs Manning)

What a wonderful half term we have had learning about 'Under the Sea'.  I think this might have been the children's favourite topic to date; helped massively by our wonderful trip to the SeaLife Centre.

However, today has confirmed my suspicions that I think the best is yet to come!! A 6ft T-Rex and a 3ft Stegosaurus joined us in class today to welcome our 'Dinosaur' topic for after the half term! I was amazed at how much the children knew already, but any extra knowledge the children can acquire over the holidays would be wonderful.

No homework over the holidays as usual; just lots of reading.  I have sent home homework books so that the children can continue learning their spellings over the half term if they choose.  Have a wonderful holiday everybody - see you in a week where it is safe to say our classroom will resemble Jurassic Park!

  • Friday 5th February (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been continuing our Under The Sea topic.  This afternoon we have been painting seahorses which will soon be adorning our classroom display.

We have been looking at our new class text 'Sharing a Shell' and the children amazed me at the start of the week when they showed how fabulous they were at not only acting out the story, but at how well they collaborated, shared their ideas and really demonstrated the 5R's in their performances to the rest of the class.

Our book has also prompted the children to write some lovely stories about the poor crab who needed to find a shell.  I think they have really enjoyed our stories that we have looked at linked to this topic.  Next week we will look at our final book, 'Billy's Bucket' - we hope they like this one just as much!

Jack says his favourite part of the week has been writing his story about the crab.

Homework this week will be the last choice from your under the sea grid, lots of reading and we are sending home your child's new spellings today - don't forget to look in the back of their book to see how well they got on in their test today!

    Have a wonderful weekend everybody!

  • Friday 29th January (Mrs Manning)

This week in class one we have been talking about our amazing trip to the SeaLife Centre and the children did a marvellous piece of writing about it on Monday morning.  They followed this with some sensational artwork of their favourite fish and have even completed some sea creature based maths.  We have focussed on two stories this week, both centred around mermaids and the writing produced from these has been wonderful.  As we enter the Spring term we have been talking about plants and have set up an experiment to see whether cress seeds will grow on a paper towel (the children are convinced that they need soil to grow!) Over the next few weeks we will be looking to see any signs of Spring that we can and looking at how the seasons change.

Kieran H says his favourite part of the week has been making his textured fish – clearly a budding artist!

A gentle reminder to make sure that reading books and records are in bags every day; we do usually change books on Friday’s but occasionally this can change so it is useful to have them just in case, and also a reminder that homework books need to be back in school on a Wednesday (or earlier if you prefer!) ready to be marked and sent out on a Friday. Thank you for all your hard work with this – I know it is difficult getting little one’s bags ready!

Homework this week will be something off your grid, lots of reading and of course, learning your spellings for our test on Friday!

  • Friday 15th January (Mrs Manning)

This week the children have adored delving deep into our new topic ‘Under the Sea’.  They have been mesmerised by our first text of the half term ‘Dougal’s Deep Sea Diary’ and very much enjoyed counting out all the treasure that he found on Thursday!
The children have also been learning the names of the five seas and have been able to locate them on a map and discuss which sea creatures would live in each one.  We all agreed that we perhaps would not want to go swimming in the Arctic or the Southern Ocean!
Oliver says that he has enjoyed completing his writing all about the things that Dougal might have seen on his Deep Sea Dive!
This week sees our new homework grid go home – thank you so much to all the parents who filled in our homework questionnaire – we really appreciate all your responses and have listened really carefully to the feedback.  We hope this new grid will have something for everyone on it and that everybody enjoys their homework tasks – I cannot wait to see what the children produce.  Marking homework truly is a joy and the effort the children put in is outstanding.
    Have a wonderful weekend everybody!

  • Friday 8th January (Mrs Manning)

What a joy it has been to welcome your little lovelies back after Christmas! I have heard wonderful stories of all the lovely presents and memories that the children had over their break and it has been a gentle ease back into school with our Sublime Science week.  I think it i agreed that the favourite part of the week has unanimously (including the staff!) been our exploding geyser experiment - I am sure you have heard all about this at home!

Next week we will start with our Under the Sea topic.  I have uploaded the newsletter so that you can see what we will be looking at over the next half term.  The children are all so excited for our school trip to the Aquarium in two weeks time (as are we!)

We hope that you all found last half term's homework tasks manageable and enjoyable.  We have put a questionnaire online so that you can tell us what you think about your child's homework.  We will therefore wait for your responses over the next week before posting the next homework grid.

To keep the children occupied this week with no homework we have sent home the new spellings and your child's personal password to our excting new website Sumdog that will replace mathletics.  We know the children will adore this and the results from year 6 trialling the site have been overwhelmingly positive!

    Have a wonderful weekend everybody!!!

  • Friday 18th December (Mrs Manning)

So here it is…Merry Christmas…Class 1 has certainly been having fun!
From watching their amazing nativity this morning, to making Christmas cards and paper chains, to solving mathematical Christmas problems and even matching Christmas Capitals.... magic and glitter has definitely been the common theme!

I would like to say a massive thank you to all the children and of course their parents for all the hard work and dedication you have shown during this first term in year one.  I hope your little treasures have enjoyed it as much as I have and I would like to wish everybody a very enjoyable and restful break.

On that note – we will not be sending homework home but have returned homework books as there will be the spelling test on the first Friday back to school.  Please do lots of reading…I hope Father Christmas brings some lovely new books for everybody!

P.S – On return to school please make sure that children have warm clothes for PE on a Friday as it can get quite cold out there after an hour!

    Friday 11th December (Mrs Manning)

Words cannot describe the pride I felt watching my amazing class in their nativity this week!  Although Mrs Morton thanked everybody at the show I would like to reiterate a huge thank you to you all for all your support and time helping the children to learn their songs and in making their stunning outfits – they looked sensational.  My biggest thank you to my lovely children – you brought tears to many eyes in church including my own; the effort and enthusiasm you all showed was just wonderful…thank you.

This week has clearly been very nativity focussed but back in class we have been reading lots of stories, writing our letters to Father Christmas, finishing off our Fire of London pop up books and doing lots of Christmassy maths.

Homework this week will be your last choice off your homework grid and lots of Christmas reading! I have been blown away by some of the homework I have received this term…the effort that goes into it is truly remarkable...thank you to everyone who puts in so much time and effort!

This week in Class 1 has seen the nativity well and truly arrive!  I have been so proud of all the children learning their song words and practising their amazing dances.  We are all so excited for you come and see your little angel or wise man showing off their magical moves!

We have of course been doing lots of singing but have also been doing some very grown up writing about the Fire of London and have been looking at multiplication and division - wow!
The children have created some beautiful Christmas decorations that are now adorning our Christmas tree which looks fantastic!

Homework this week will be something off your grid and lots of reading as always.  Don't forget it is spelling test next week too.

Please ensure that on Monday the children come to school in their nativity costumes and bring their unifrom in a labelled carrier bag - see you at our sensational show!

  • Friday 27th November (Mrs Manning)

Well, this week has been assessment week in Class 1 and I am very proud of how well the children have tackled the challenges that they have been given.  Their reading, writing and maths skills are coming on all the time and it is a pleasure to see how they are developing.  Well done Class 1!

This week has not all been about assessments - we have had lots of fun too! The children have decorated christmas tree decorations, we have seen our Christmas tree go up in Class 1, we have got the paints out and created fire of London pictures and we have done so much singing and dancing I am surprised their voices are not worn out!

Lilly says her favourite part of the week has been completing her calculations for her maths assessment - how lovely to hear!

Homework this week will be lots of reading, something off your grid and you've also got your new spellings in your yellow books.  I am amazed by some of the homework coming in - keep it up!

  • Friday 20th November (Mrs Manning)

I cannot begin to say how very proud I was of all our little stars this morning.  Everybody did so very well; actors, actresses, parents who made costumes and even our absent directors who helped to make the show what it was so a massive thank you to EVERY member of Class 1 – I am ever so privileged to be your teacher!

This week we have been focussing mainly around our assembly and we have started rehearsing for our Christmas Production.  I have to say the enthusiasm and dedication the children have already shown to learning their songs and dances is exceptional.  We are asking for our boys to be wise men (the glitzier the better!) and for our girls to be angels (the same goes - we all love a bit of sparkle!)

Reece says his favourite part of the week has been singing Christmas songs - how lovely.

Homework this week will be something off your grid and lots of reading. Next week is assessment week in school which means that we have not sent any new spellings to learn as we are hoping that the children will learn some tricky words off the lists that have been sent home from Reception as we will have a short class spelling test next week.  Please do not panic about assessment week…the children are all very excited to show me how well they can do and it will be carried out in the true All Saints’ Way – lots of stickers, praise, celebration and a recognition that each and every child IS making progress since they came to me in September…this is just their time to shine! If you (or your little one) has any concerns please, please come and see me…my door is always open.

    Have a wonderful weekend everybody!

    Friday 13th November (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been treated to an amazing school trip to Staircase House where we were able to learn all about the Gret Fire Of London!  The children acted out the story and we were also able to make our own walls of a 1666 house using wattle and daub as well as creating our own fire marks.  The children were beautifully behaved and I was very proud of each one of them.

We have also been learning about bonfire night and have been reading our story about Hovis the Hedgehog.  The children created homes for Hovis and have done lots of writing and maths work based around the story.

Tyler says that her favourite part of the week has been our school trip because we got to learn all about the Fire of London.  (She also said that she has loved her mental maths tests - this is lovely to hear!)

Homework this week will be something off your grid as well as finishing off learning your lines for our assembly next Friday morning - however we are pretty much there as you have all worked so incredibly hard at home - thank you so much.

Please don't forget to send in any costumes that I have not had yet so that we can have a sensational dress rehearsal this week!

What a fabulous first week we have had back at school! The children are really enjoying their new topic of Fire Fire and are so excited to go on our first school trip to Staircase House on Monday - please remember to send your child with a labelled packed lunch!
This week we have completed many firey activities; we have painted a fire scene background, we have begun to learn the words for our class assembly (please help your child learn these at home), we have completed maths problems based on toffee apples, we have read the story of the fire of London and we have even met Hovis the Hedgehog who needed to find a new home after bonfire night.

Erin says her favourite part of the week has been writing her 'London's Burning' song in her neatest handwriting because she got to draw a fabulous picture of Pudding Lane at the end!

Homework this week will be something off your brand new Tic Tac Toe grid as well as lots of reading and of course learning any words you may have in the class assembly.  Also, new spellings are in your homework books ready to practise!

Well done on an amazing first week back - please keep really safe over bonfire weekend - remember all the hints and tips from when our fireman came to visit!

  • Friday 23rd October (Mrs Manning)

I cannot believe that we are at the end of our first half term in year one! I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all the parents and the children who have worked so hard on homework, extra learning at home and all the effort that has been put into everything in class - your children are absolute superstars!

This week we have had our very exciting Church Week - the children have been impeccably behaved and it was a real joy to take them - they were a credit to All Saints'.  They have worked so hard on learning their harvest poem and their song - well done to my amazing class!

Ella says that her favourite part of the week has been making the apple crumble with Mrs Hammond...we thought this would be a super way to celebrate harvest and they have been made with apples from Mrs Clayton's tree in true Harvest spirit - we hope you all enjoy these at home!

There will be no homework this week due to it being half term - we just want you to have a lovely week off! We have sent home the children's homework books so that you can celebrate their spelling scores from today but please don't feel the need to do any work over the holidays (apart from maybe some reading!)

Thank you again for a wonderful half term - it has been a pleasure and a privilege teaching your children!

  • Friday 16th October (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have been finishing off our food topic ready for our exciting Church Week and our change of topic after half term.  The children have been learning about where in the world food comes from, how much food the reindeers will need in the run up to Christmas, what animals eat and they have been making papier mache apples ready for our Harvest Festival!

Katie says her favurite part of the week has been phonics because she liked learning the sound 'ea' cup of tea...what a lovely thing to hear!

Please, please help your child learn their words to our harvest festival song so that they can WOW you next Friday afternoon!  We can't wait to see as many of you there as possible.

Homework this week will be handwriting, something off your grid and lots and lots of reading and learning your sounds!

  • Friday 9th October (Mrs Manning)

Well the days are certainly becoming more blustery and cold as we move through October - please could I ask that children bring their coats into school every day now as they are needed greatly at break times!

We have had a lovely week in Class 1.  I have been so very impressed with the children's maths!  We have been adding, subtracting, looking at money (all the children told me they would much prefer a £20 note in their piggy bank as opposed to a 1p piece!) and even more impressively....doubling!

The children continue to amaze me as this week they completed their first independent writing challenge - rewriting the story of the Hungry Caterpillar.  This is a big step from anything they have been used to and I was really proud of how they handled it in the All Saints' Way.  They were very resilient and every single one of them should feel very proud of what they acheived - I certainly was.

Finley said that his favourite part of the week has been the halving game that we played on Friday afternoon.  He enjoyed learning how to halve in a circle together and then liked playing the racing game to halve numbers as quickly as possible!

Thank you so much for taking the time to come in and see me for parents evening - it was a joy to be able to spend some time talking to you about your little superstars.  My door is always open so if you forgot something at parents evening please just pop in any time!

Homework this week will be something off the gird, handwriting, reading and your child has had their new spellings sent home this week too! They are also on the class page on the website.

  • Friday 2nd October (Mrs Manning)

First of all let me say a big Thank You to all the families that came to our open morning this morning.  The children had a lovely time seeing everybody and really enjoyed the Hungry Caterpillar theme!

This week we have been stepping up our maths to include adding and subtracting...on a number line....very grown up!  The children rose to the challenge really well and I am very proud of them all.

We have been writing lots of super sentences this week linked to the Hungry Caterpillar and have begun leanring to spell the days of the week...keep working on these at home!

Ethan said that his favourite- part of the week has been making a hospital for the hungry caterpillar in construction - this was a big hit!

Homework this week will be handwriting, something off your grid and practising those spellings ready for your first test next Friday!

  • Friday 25th September (Mrs Manning)

Well the children absolutely adored being Willy Wonka earlier in the week - many, many thanks to all the generous chocolate and sweet donations that were sent into class.  I am sure you can imagine how much the final product was enjoyed!

We have been working hard on our maths this week, looking at ten frames, adding and even taking away, and have been reading all about the very hungry caterpillar.  The children were wonderful doctors and nurses on Wednesday helping his poorly tummy after he had eaten too many foods that hurt his tummy!

Ava says that her favourite part of the week has been making her yummy chocolate bar - what a surprise!  I think she speaks for all the children in Class 1!

Homework this week will be handwriting (a row of each letter), reading (please make sure you record in your child's reading record - I truly love reading all your comments) and something off the homework grid.

  • Friday 18th September (Mrs Manning)

This week in Class 1 we have really got into our food topic! We have been counting how many pieces of fruit we can see, learning about what we grow in the UK and what grows elswhere in the world, writing about our favourite foods and looking at a balanced diet.

Brooke says that their favoruite part of the week has been Pe with Mr Granite.  She enjoyed putting the ball on the cones and seeing who would be first to reach it!

Homework this week will be something from your grid - I have been absolutely amazed with the homework that has come into class this week - we especially enjoyed the children's baking at breaktimes!

Handwriting sheet - a line of each letter.  We are really trying to crack letter formation in class 1 so that our writing not only sounds wonderful but looks amazing too!

Lots and lots of reading - keep writing in those gorgeous new reading records - I adore reading your comments and seeing how your little superstars are getting on!  I hope to see as many of you as possible at the phonics meeting next Wednesday evening so we can look over some of the more tricky sounds together which will enable you to help your child even more at home - I can't tell you how much school appreciates all the hard work that goes on at home.

PS - Don't forget your chocolate bar, sweeties and Mr Kipling cases for Monday as we will be making them on Tuesday afternoon! Many thanks.

  • Friday 11th September (Mrs Manning)

This week Class 1 have been learning about all things Food! We have been printing with fruit, writing labels and captions for our favourite foods, counting different foods and practising our number formation!
The children have been absolute stars settling into their new Year 1 lives and I am very proud of them all!

  • Friday 4th September (allsaints-pri Admin)

    Welcome to Class 1

    Have a lovely weekend everyone

  • Friday 17th July (allsaints-pri Admin)

I actually cannot believe how close we are to the end of term and that next week will be our final week in school! As a treat for being so amazing all year we are planning on having a Pirate Party on Thursday afternoon. It would be amazing if your child could come in on Thursday morning with a pirate snack e.g pirate cupcakes, sea shanty sandwiches, some Pirate pop, crazy crisps (anything your little Pirate might enjoy!) for the class to share and any donations of prizes for our pirate games would also be most appreciated! If your little Pirate would like to re-use their Pirate outfit it would be lovely for them to come dressed up again but best party clothes would also be amazing!

This week in Class 1 we have been doing lots of Pirate based maths and the children have been writing a wonderful Pirate story. I am sure that all the children came home and told you their design for their Pirate tattoos too!

Homework this week will be English books pages 26-27, finishing off those handwriting packs and lots of reading (as well as some voluntary baking for the Pirate Party!!)

  • Friday 10th July (allsaints-pri Admin)

This week in our wonderful class the children have amazed me with their times table knowledge as they played a pirate multiplication game! Lots of the children want to play this at home so the link is http:// www.multiplication.com/games/play/ pirates-ii for all those keen little ones who want to improve their times tables!

The children have blown us all away with their gorgeous pirate stories of which I am sure they have regaled to you at home - they really do have the most fantastic imaginations!

Homework this week will be Tic Tac Toe, learning your new spellings for your last test in Year 1, handwriting and lots of reading!

  • Friday 3rd July (allsaints-pri Admin)

This week in Class 1 there has been a real buzz as the children have been getting ready to move into year 2. The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting their new class teachers and especially making the cakes it seemed! It was also really lovely to have some of their queries and worries answered by the Year 2 children earlier in the week; I know some worried little minds were settled. If your child still has any concerns about transition please, please come in and speak to either myself or one of the Year 2 team - we are always here to help.

We have been carrying on our Pirating this week, learning the words to Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life For Me (many apologies if this is all you hear all weekend!) We have also been completing some Pirate maths and reading some more Pirate stories.

Homework this week will be Maths Pages 22-23, handwriting and lots of reading. The Summer Reading Challenge will be coming up at Marple Library soon and it would be wonderful if lots of our infants get involved!

  • Friday 26th June (allsaints-pri Admin)

This week in Class 1 we have been going sports mad, from skipping to dancing, boxing to yoga! The children have had a wonderful time and have worked ever so hard, both inside the classroom and getting their hearts healthy and their bodies fit!

Well done everyone, taking part is so important and one thing that shines through in Class 1 is teamwork and resilience. They make me proud every day!

Homework this week will be English pages 24-25 as well as the handwriting packs and of course lots of reading!

  • Friday 19th June (allsaints-pri Admin)

This week in Class 1 we have continued to learn all about Pirates - we hope you all liked their Sock Parrots that they made earlier in the week! We have been making pirates walk the plank if they tripped up on their Maths sequences counting in 2's, 5's and 10's which the children adored!

A MASSIVE congratulations to ALL our little superstars this week - their reading Phonics Screening Check was phenomenal and I am unbelievably proud of each and every one of them. I am sure your little one has rushed home to you with their sensational score but if they haven't and you are itching to know then please just pop in and I will share this with you!

Homework this week will be Maths pages 20-21 as well as handwriting (this is now a major push and something to really work on at home ready for those exciting Year 2 pen licenses!) and lots of reading as always.

  • Friday 12th June (allsaints-pri Admin)

We have fully been embracing our new Pirate topic in Year 1; looking at pirate money, completing pirate maths and even planning a pirate party! The children looked wonderful on Friday and as always did us immensely proud on our walk to the canal.

Please can children bring in 3 old socks so they can make their own pirate parrot?

Homework this week will be your first Pirate Tic Tac Toe as well as continuing the handwriting booklets and of course lots of reading as always! I can't wait for our little stars to shine next week during the Phonics Check in the way that they always do!
