Class 5 Public community Blog
  • Friday 11th September (Sam)

This week has been a busy one but I am pleased to say Class 5 have more than risen to the challenge! This week has seen the children learning about the life cycles of flowering plants (shown in the pictures below) as well as learning about Architecture in their art lessons, writing exciting action sequences in English and rounding in Maths. Keep up the good work Year 5! Please note that we will soon be continuing to post only on Tapestry so make sure you have the app downloaded!

Sadly I'm signing off!  I just wanted to wish you all a happy summer holiday.  I hope you all manage to have lots of fun and come back to school in September raring to go.  I have loved being your class teacher for the part of the year we were together.

I'll see you around and about I am sure, make sure you say hello, I know I'll be wondering how you all are!

Happy summer and good luck in year 6!

  • Friday 17th July (Mrs L Cochrane)

Hi everyone, my penultimate blog at All Saints'!  I hope you are all ok, has anyone done anything nice this week or got anything good planned for the weekend?  I've heard of a couple of camping trips happening and I'm very jealous! I LOVE CAMPING!  I will hopefully see a lot of you at the farewell hello meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening.  The class teams from year 5 and 6 are looking forward to seeing you all.

As usual I have updated the worksheet tasks on the website (WC 20.7.20) and you will have a selection of tasks set on the online learning platforms.  Please try to get onto TTRS the year 6s have been really committed to the competition and think they have the win in the bag!

    This weeks Stats coming up:

Mathletics:  Well done to Ethan, Ava, Katie, Louie, Amelia, Soren, Bella and Isla who have all earnt over 1000 points on mathletics.

TTRS:  The tope of the table (at 9am this morning) is as follows:  Amelia with a staggering 10,397 with Jacob and Louie in second and third respectively.

Reading Eggpress:  Well done to Katie, AMelia and Bella for earning bronze trophies and Bella who has also earnt a silver!

Nessy:  Lois has amazed me with her dedication to Nessy during the lockdown.  To date she has spent an amaing 5903 minutes practising her spelling rules and patterns!  Amazing work Lois!  I might pop back especially in September to see your super spelling!

This is a recommendation from Miss Taylor.  Feel free to have a look at use how you feel most appropriate.

Hello everyone, welcome to this week's blog.

I hope everyone is doing well and thanks as always to those who have been in touch this week.  I have had some lovely messages about what you have all been up to.  As always I have uploaded a home learning pack and guidance for parents this is on the class page and is entitled WC 13.7.20 and Wc 13.7.20 Parental Guidance.  Additionally, we have offered some challenge learning packs for maths which are also uploaded (both year 5 and year 6 versions are uploaded - see which you feel would be best for your child).

Please continue to try to access reading eggspress, mathletics and TTRS, these are really effective ways of keeping the key skills and basics ticking over and maintaining the fluency that children need in these areas.  Aiming for three comprehension lessons, three spelling lessons (on reading eggpress) and 1000 points on mathletics is probably the a reasonable amount.  I have stopped assigning work on reading eggspress as it seemed to be interfering with people's progress.  In mathletics I have set some tasks on decimals.

Well done to Katie, Amelia, Kelan and Bella who have all earnt reading eggpress trophies.  And well dont to Brooke, Ethan, Aa, Katie, Jack, Jacob, Amelia, Soren, Bella and Isla who have all earnt mathletics certificates too!

Next week there is a timetable rockstars competition year 5 vs year 6...let's see if we can beat them!  As much TTing as you can!

Look forward to seeing those who can attend at the farewell/hello meeting.

    Have a great weekend

    Hi everyone,

Hope you are well.  Welcome to this weeks blog.  I am in school on Wednesday-Friday so apologies if you are trying to contact me on these days, I'll be in touch asap.

Last week's blog (below) outlined all the different home-learning options.  You may dip in and out of these as you need please feel free to contact me if you feel you need some support with anything.  Likewise I know many of you have your own set ups that are working successfully so please feel free to continue with these.  There are many online learning platforms to access and I will continue to assign work on these.  With the closure going on as long as it has, we are all dealing with very adverse and unique circumstances.  Consequently, all children will have had a different experience of home learning.  This is to be expected. When possible, I would really encourage you to support your children as much as you can in just keeping the basics of spelling, maths, tables, reading ticking over.  Please try not to worry too much though, once we do return we will do all we can to provide a strong transition back into school life socially, emotionallu and accademically.

    Please keep in touch,

    Best Wishes

What a scorcher this week has been!  I've been melting in our classroom working with the year 6s!

I hope you are all managing your home learning.  It has been going on a long time, much longer than I thought it would.

    Home Learning

Just to reiterate, if you have a system that is working well for you then please continue using it. Below is guidance on how to support your children if you require some ideas.

On the class page of the website there are five maths and five English tasks uploaded that give a range of different leaning opportunities (entitiled WC 29.6.20).  I have also been setting units on reading express and mathletics for children to complete.  Reading Eggpress is a new programme that school have recently subscribed to.  Unfortunately neither the children nor me had have worked on it before lockdown so we're all leaning togther.  Just some information that you might find helpful about this programme:

    • There is a placement test that children take and this sets each of them at a suitable level for their ability.  Make sure children answer carefully and independently to achieve the correct level.
    • Children then access 'lessons' based on this level.

If your child hasn't accessed this yet please encourage them to.  After they have taken the placement test I think that three lessons a week is about right.  There are also year group spelling lessons too.  Again, I would recommend three lessons per week.  Just work through lessons consecuetively.

An important thing to note about reading programme is that children cannot move on to the next lesson until they have scored 80% so it may appear that they are re-doing lessons.  This high achievement score encourages children to really refine their reading and understanding.  I would really, really encourage you to use this learning platform as it is giving very high quality reading material and suitably leveled questions.  It is the closest we can currently achieve to whole class reading lessons.  I won't set specific lessons this week but children can work through the lessons themselves (aiming for three per week).  Any problems please contact me and I will do my best to help.

There are many other learning opportuities on the homelearning tab on the school website. The pobble document on the class page also has lots of fun suggestions for non screen activities. If anyone has any entries for the long term homework project (designing a catapult or marble run) please upload photos by Tuesday 30th June.  Information has been sent out via ping.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend, missing you all SO MUCH! Keep in touch

  • Thursday 18th June (Mrs L Cochrane)

    Hello families of Class 5!

Hope you are all doing ok.   I am trying to adjust to the next normal. I have enjoyed my week with the year 6's but obviously I miss class 5 a lot.  It seems very strange having different children in the class.  I've been getting back into the swing of class teaching again too!  I took myself out of my comfort zone and went horse riding the other day!  Was nice to try something different, I haven't ridden for about 15 years...I felt like I could do with a seat belt!

Thanks to those who have been in touch this week.  I have tried to keep in touch but Wednesday- Friday is a bit more difficult so apologies for any late replies.  I will email the children for next week with tasks that I have set for the week and I will also upload the next learning pack.  I think there may be some confusion with the downloadable work having different date on.  We are a week behind as we had a longer half term than other schools.  Well done to Amelia who has been fundraising for the NHS by selling homemade clay models and producing 'Neild's News' Newspaper.  What a fantastic achievement, we are so proud of you!

I am setting blocks of work on Mathletics and Reading Eggspress for all children.  If you have a home learning system that is working successfully for you at home by all means continue with what you are doing.  However, if not, please encourage your child to complete the tasks set.  I am trying to set a range of activities that will hopefully keep the basic skills ticking over.  It is so important for the children to keep reading as fluency in reading is sadly hard to achieve and easy to loose.  If you don't have access to books at home we are hoping to set up school borrowing service.  However, in the mean time, there are lots of ebooks on Reading Eggspress that children can access for free (go to the library section).  They can search for subjects of interest, by age range, book type etc.  Additionally, there are many materials on the home learning tab of the school website weekly projects etc.

Mathletics:  The certificates are being earnt thick and fast. Well done to Isla and Ethan, each earning silver certificates.  Brooke, Katie, Erin, Louie, Jacob, Amelia, Kieran P, Soren, and Bella all earning Bronze certificates.

Reading Eggpress:  Well done to Amelia and Jack for earning trophies on this programme.  I know how hard you have both worked.  Well done.

Nessy:  A MASSIVE shout out to Lois who is going Nessy crazy!  Lois has spent a staggering 203 minutes on Nessy this week and have been the top user of the programme for three weeks on the trot.  You are going to be one super speller!

Any questions or queries please contact us, either via your child's DB account or using the headteacher email address on the website.

    Have a great weekend,

Hi Class 5 and families, How are you all?

This is the end of a strange week for me, I have been back in school since Monday.  I have been working with a small group of year sixes in our classroom.  It's nice to be back in school and working with these children again but its also strange that its not my own class.

I hope you have all been managing ok with the home learning, I have had some lovely emails updating of what you have all been up to.  I hvae uploaded next weeks learning packs onto the website and I will email the children with some optional tasks too.  If you have your own systems set up please don't feel the need to change everything, just carry on.  If there is anything you need please do get in touch via your child's DB account or using the headteacher email address.

Well done to the following children who have all earnt mathletics certificates this since half term: Brooke, Louie, Ethan, Katie, Erin, Bella, Jacob, Amelia, Kieran P, Soren, Lois and Isla.  Well done to Kelan and Bella who have been awarded reading eggspress trophies.

Have a great weekend, keep in touch, hope we get the sunshine back soon!

  • Friday 22nd May (Mrs L Cochrane)

Well we have reached the end of a unique half term.  Can I just reiterate how proud I am of the children.  I hope you all have a well deserved rest over half-term holiday.  I won't be setting work over the break but feel free to keep using the online learning platforms and any other resources you may have if you wish.  Do try to keep reading though.

Well done to these pupils who have earnt mathletics certificates this week:  Chloe, Ava, Kieran P, Ethan, Ava, Katie, Louie, Jacob, Amelia, Soren, Bella and Isla.  Also well done to Kelan who has earnt a bronze trophy on readings eggspress and Jack who has earnt a gold!

If there is anything you need over the break do get in touch via the headteacher email account and we will do our upmost to give you the support you need.

Have a wonderful break, to those who should have been going away my sympathies are with you!  Hopefully holidays will be back on the agenda before too long!

    Best Wishes

  • Friday 15th May (Mrs L Cochrane)

Hey everybody, I hope you're well. Welcome to this week's blog.

Some of you may have seen an update on the blog on Monday.  Starting this week I will be uploading a weekly pack of worksheets for class 5. You may access these if you wish or you may ignore them entirely and carry on working in the way you already are.  The choice is yours. Some parents and families prefer these these types of activities. Some families have their own activities planned and some parents and families are using the activity suggestions from the daily email I am sending. This email has suggestions of activities you may wish to attempt that day and also describes work set on online learning platforms.  It also gives children the opportunity to contact me if they have any problems.  There are additionally the weekly tasks which are on the covid-19 section of the website which families may attempt together.  I do appreciate that this is a lot of work - we are aiming to provide a range so that you can choose what works best for your family.  Please, please do not try to complete all these tasks - choose what works best for you and your family and just aim to keep the basics ticking over.  Whatever approach you choose is absolutely fine. If you need any help or any support at any time please contact me via your child's DB email account or you can contact school using headteachers email address.

A great week for mathletics in class 5 this week with 13 certificates being awarded. Well done to Chloe, Ava, and Kieran P who have all bronze and silver certificates. Well done also to Katie, Louie Jacob, Amelia, Soren, Bella and Isla who have all earned bronze certificates. Huge well done to you all. Well done to those of you who have accessed the lessons on reading eggs this week you were doing really well with this programme no trophies have been earnt this week but lots of good participation in the lesson so well done class 5.

Please keep in touch and let me know what you are up to. Again if you have any questions or problems please do drop me an email and I'll be really happy to help you. Currently, I'm at school on a Thursday so my replies to emails on this day might be slower.  I will upload a new pack of worksheets on to the website for Monday this document will be called WC 15.1.20.

Have a great weekend, hope to see you all soon

  • Monday 11th May (Mrs L Cochrane)

    Update:

The children will be recieving this information on an email tomorrow.  On the class page of the website there are two PDF documents.  One is called WC 11.5.20 and one is called WC 11.5.20 Parental Guidance.  If you click these documents there are some worksheet activities one for each day of the week for Maths and English. If you would like to do these you can.  You don't have to.  They are there for people who would rather do some worksheet type tasks.   I will update this document weekly.

On the daily email to children I will set mainly online learning rather than attachments (like today's poetry activity). If you are happy with what you are doing for home learning, just carry on.  Everyone will come back having done different things and that's fine.  Just do what works best for you and your child.  There is no right or wrong way.  If you can keep the basics going with bits of maths, spelling, reading and writing and maybe learn some new skills (baking, cleaning, sewing, drawing, gardening, DIY whatever you are into) this is more than enough.  We do not expect children to be doing a full length school day at home.  Enjoy time together and hopefully we will be back soon.

  • Thursday 7th May (Mrs L Cochrane)

Hi everyone yet another week has passed.  Lockdown is going on longer than I thought, writing the weekly blog seems to come round so quickly.  I really hope everybody is ok, there are parts of lockdown that I'm starting to find challenging and sure other people feel the same.  Please let me reiterate, please do get in touch if there's anything at all you need regarding support for children and family. I am happy to help with any problems with work that children may be encountering and we can certainly support you via school.  If you need to contact us please use the headteacher email on the website or your child's DB login.  The blog is a little early as this weekend is officially Bank Holiday.  I won't send the children a email tomorrow however there's plenty of work to the children can be getting onto if they wish to do so.

Firstly shoutouts from the online learning platforms well done to Ava, Katie, Louie, Colette, Amelia, Bella and Isla for earning bronze certificates on mathletics and well done to Bella and Isla who have gone and further to earn a silver certificates.   Brilliant to see the practise keeping going well done all of you.  As people are all tackling home learning differently please don't worry too much about achieving 1000 points each week if you're keeping other maths activities going that's perfect.  Moving on to Reading Eggspress which is my new favourite programme well done to Jack and Colette and Louie for all earning trophies this week.  Katie, Brooke, Bella and Finn are top of the leader board for time spent on the programme.  This is a really, really useful programme it gives children access to brilliant resources, fantastic reading materials and lots of extra spelling practice as well. If you haven't yet logged on do have to log on and have a look.  Any problems please do get in touch, I'm getting better at it now.  Finally TTRS I've set everybody to automatic on this programme, this should enable children to repeatedly practise particular multiplications that they find difficult this will improve accuracy and speed.

I'm aware there's a lot of different resources available please access what you feel is best for your child.  If you prefer for your child to work on paper and doing activities in books etc I have uploaded a range of activities on the class 5 blog page which you can download.  Just a reminder that I send the children a daily email with a selection of different activities that they may like to attempt that day. As a rule I tend to aim for one maths, one English and something creative.  In a homeschooling environment this is probably ample for the day.  As always, you know your children best so do feel free to adjust as you feel necessary.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend and the weather continues to shine.

    Best wishes, Mrs Cochrane

  • Friday 1st May (Mrs L Cochrane)

Hi everyone welcome to Fridays blog. I can't believe another week has passed, the weeks seem to be absolutely flying at the moment.  Maybe that's because the amount of time I spend a tidying up after my children at home!  We have been watching the Kirstie's Keep crafting and carry on programme which has got some great ideas. Bit of a health warning though, does make quite a lot of mess, candle making has been this week's project - I'm not sure my kitchen utensils have been able to take it.

I just want to start by saying huge well done to the following children for making excellent progress on the learning platforms.  Well done to Fin, Katie, Louie, Kelan, Freya and Isla who have all earned bronze trophies on the new reading Eggs programme.  It's been a brilliant week from mathletics with the following children all learning certificates Ethan, Ava, Katie, Amelia, Kelan, Freya, Soren, Bella and Isla who have earnt bronze certificates. Kelan has also achieved a silver and a gold certificates huge well done to you all.  These will be awarded on our return to school.

Each morning I've been sending the children a short email with some suggested activities for the day.  These are optional activities but might help to give you some ideas for your day.  However, if you are getting on with your own projects that's perfectly fine also.  I hope by now everybody has found the spelling lists on the class 5 blog page. These are at the top and saved as 'summer term group one or two or three'.  If you are unsure which group your child is in please encourage them to send me a quick email and DB primary and I'll be able to tell me easily.  Please encourage your child to let me know how they've got on when they've been tested on the week's spellings.

It goes without saying, if anybody needs anything please do get in touch either with me,via DB primary or you can use the headteacher's email address from the website. We are happy to help in any way that we can.  Look out for next week's whole school project on the website under the COVID home learning tab which is underneath the pictures of the headteachers on the main page.

Have a wonderful weekend, I hope the weather is sunny and we can all have some more barbeques.

    Take care, best wishes

    Mrs Cochrane

  • Friday 24th April (Mrs L Cochrane)

Happy Friday everyone, I can't believe we've reached the end of another week.  It seems like lockdown is going on longer than I'd  thought.

A huge well done to everyone who's accessing the learning platforms this week and has been keeping in touch via the DB email.  If you have any problem accessing any of the programs or with any of the tasks have been set please do get in touch via DB email.  Lots of you have been in touch showing me what you've been doing which is wonderful.  Some of you have been accessing the tasks set and others have been doing their own wonderfully creative things.  It's fabulous to see how imaginative people are being and the wonderful learning that's happening whilst we're away from school.  The daily emails that I'm sending give you an indication of activities that you may wish to access.  If you have your own ideas or want to go with your own child's interests please feel free to do this but please encourage themto keep in touch and let me know what they're up to.

I have uploaded the term's spellings onto the class 5 web page,  there are three different groups for spellings if your child is unsure which group there in please contact me via DB emails and I will be able to clarify this for you.  Children have remained in the same groups as they did last term.

As you know, Mrs Noble set English project this week linked to the book Until I met Dudley.  You have been designing different inventions be used during the Covid-19 outbreak.  Thank you so much for children have sent me examples of this work.  Next week the focus will be science. The project will be uploaded onto the website for you to access on Monday.  There are a selection of different activities you may wish to engage in with your family, along with some super sciencey websites.  I really hope you find them helpful.

Well done to Amelia ,Jacob, Chloe, Ethan, Katie and Jack who have all earned mathletics from certificates this week..these will be awarded when we are back at school Ethan has also earned his gold mathletics certificate a huge well done to you. I know you worked really hard towards it. It seems like lots of you enjoying you doing the new reading express programme that Mrs noble signed up for. As a class we had spent a staggering 29 hours on it this week that's a massive achievement so well done class 5.  Finn, Isla and Louie we're on top three on reading eggs - awarded on time spent on the programme.  Well done to you all.

Just by way of a reminder, your children have access to mathletics, Reading Express, times table rockstars and some children have a Nessy subscription.  There is new the weekly subject focus/whole school project which I mentioned earlier (this week's was Engish based and it ia science next week.  There is also a link on the school website to various different live Learning lessons. Steve Backshall is doing a wonderfull ive broadcast from YouTube each Wednesday morning this is really worth watching with your children.  The White Rose maths home learning link may be challenging for some children as we have not covered the content in class; if your child is struggling to keep up with these sessions please do just use mathletics and ttrockstars to spend time consolidating basic learning and existing understanding.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, enjoy the sunshine. I'm sure lots of us are having barbeques.  Hopefully will be back at school again soon, any questions please do get in touch or  use the headteacher email if you'd rather communicate with school on this way.

I just like to say again, how incredibly proud I am of all the children's amazing work, it's wonderful to see their creativity and resilience flourishing.

    Best Wishes

Mrs Cochrane and year 5 team

  • Friday 3rd April (Mrs L Cochrane)

    Hi everyone,

I hope you are all ok.  Just a quick update before the ‘holidays’.  I hope you are all managing the lockdown – it’s certainly taken a bit of getting used to and I have to admit I preferred sunny lockdown!  Fingers crossed we get the sunshine back again soon.

To remind you, I have been emailing the children via DB primary each day with tasks and challenges. I have had some lovely responses from members of the class.  There is work/tasks set for children on DB and Mathletics.  In the emails I have been sending links to kahoot online quizzes (which the children love doing in class) and I have also given link to some online home learning maths – this can be completed in the exercise book they brought home from school (they can work from the screen if that makes sense).  I have set poetry challenges, science research and many other (what I hope are) engaging tasks.

Over the ‘holidays’ I will not be setting daily work for the children and might be less available to the children via DB.  However, the children are most welcome to continue using the online learning platforms and working on projects/tasks they may have started.

This looks like a great link for science and geography if anyone wants to have a look at it.  It is a two- week programme running after the Easter break.

    https://encounteredu.com/live-lessons/fsc-fieldworklive-2020?ref=email&dm_i=65YE,VTJ,K4AF4,34LG,1

If you feel you need support from school in any way please do contact us through the headteacher email address (headteacher@allsaints-pri.stockport.sch.uk)  Mrs Morton or Mrs Gaynor will be monitoring this and will get back to you as soon as they are able.  Sending you Easter wishes and lots of love and prayers at this most unusual time.

Mrs Cochrane and the class five team

  • Friday 27th March (Mrs L Cochrane)

We have reached the end of what has been a most extraordinary week.  I hope everyone is managing ok.  The government's conditions are taking some getting used to.  If anyone is having any problems that school may be able to help with, do email the headteacher email address and information can be passed on accordingly.  We will aim to help as much as possible.  Children can email me via DB primary with questions and queries or just to say hi. I monitor this as regularly as possible.

I hope you are all being able to enjoy some quality time with your families, although the conditions are unusual to say the least.  With the challenges, we have also found positives.

Each day I have been sending the children an email via DB primary.  It explains the tasks set for the day and also has a quick check in with the children.  A lot of children have been attempting these so a huge well done.  I am trying to set a range of different challenges: some arty ones, some writing, some active ones etc.  To run alongside these there are spelling and maths activities on DB and also work set on mathletics.  Brilliant engagement from the whole class on matheletics this week, I was amazed when I saw some of the scores!  A massive well done to our top scorer, Amelia – with an incredible score of 44,000!!! Feel free to do activities yourselves at home too.  Things like cooking, sewing, DIY, painting, household chores etc all provide valuable learning experiences for children and are often things we don’t have time for.  For those of you that purchased the CGP books these are really brilliant resources a page or two of these daily, will be really helpful.  The children brought home their recent assessments so going through these would also be a worthwhile activity.  Any problems with logins etc contact via DB or let school know and we will do our best to resolve these.  We are more than aware of the stresses and strains on families during this time so be kind to yourselves, do what you can.

This week’s weather has definitely been a blessing and I hope you have all managed to get outside and enjoy the sunshine.  Please keep in touch.  Take care, stay safe,

Mrs Cochrane and class 5 team

  • Friday 20th March (Mrs L Cochrane)

This is a funny blog to write.  We have all found ourselves in most peculiar of positions.  Thank you so much to all families for their ongoing support with the ever changing situation.

As you know, from the end of the day today (Friday 20th March) All Saints school will be closed until further notice.  We are still a bit unsure of the finer details, all I can do to reassure you that school will do their upmost to keep you informed of any developments.

The children have been fabulous this week, in the face of total adversity they have managed amazingly and I am so proud of each and every one of them.

During the closure this blog will be updated weekly. In class we have worked on DB primary ‘mail’, ‘blog’ and ‘forum’.  These will be good ways to communicate together.  Children all have logins for this site via our school website (please note new website sent via ping and also stuck into reading records).  I will email children regularly with some suggestions of tasks to do.  Feel free to dip in and out of this as you feel appropriate. They can email back and let me know how they are getting on and ask questions.  I will try to answer these as promptly as possible but you may have to bear with me a bit as I get more familiar with the software and also work around my own family commitments.  Any spelling, reading and tables practise will always be beneficial.  So if you’re at a loose end they’d be a good go to!  I’ve sent common exception words home for children to practise and as time goes on I will update spellings accordingly.

Although the situation is truly adverse; I have spoken to children about the positives they can take from it. Enjoy time together as a family; make use of craft sets you never get round to using, learn a new skill, get outdoors and try to have some time to relax!  All our families will be ever in our thoughts and prayers and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.

  • Friday 28th February (Mrs L Cochrane)

Welcome back to school, I hope you all had a relaxing break, despite the horrific weather conditions.   We have welcomed Miss Cornah, who is a teaching student from Edge Hill university, to our class this week.  She will be with us next week and for six weeks after Easter.

We had our first swimming session this afternoon.  Don't forget forest school things for boys this Wednesday.  With the weather being so extreme please put on lots of layers.

In Maths this week we have been working on fractions, fractions and more fractions.  We started on Monday with some equivalent fraction relays and team games.  We have been looking at number sequences involving fractions, and also comparing fractions greater and less than one.  We have revised equivalent fractions and also improper and mixed numbers.  Next week we will be investigating adding and subtracting fractions – which is easier than it sounds!

In English we have started looking at writing diary entries.  We have read a couple of examples of diaries written in the fourteenth century during a different plague epidemic.  We have found good examples of words and phrases to include here.  Next week we are going to write our own entries in role as a character from our class book.

We have completed an experiment in science based on soluable and insoluable materials.  Can your child remember these terms and the difference between them?  Finn was our star writer this week; writing a particularly revolting plague cure.  A big well done Fin.  Mathletics certificates today for Isla, Ethan, Amelia and Soren all of whom have earnt over 1000 points.  The reading raffle was won by Chloe! SO many brilliant comments and lots of reading over the holidays too! Well done to everyone who is really committing to reading at home.   There are many incentives to read regularly at home, please try to do this as much as possible.  We are striving for 30 tickets in the raffle! Year six are nearly there!

Next week is assessment week, children will be completing the NFER tests in maths, grammar, spelling and reading.  These are nothing to be worried about and will be conducted in the ‘All Saints Way’.

    Homework is as follows

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday

    Have a great weekend

Mrs Cochrane and the year 5 team

  • Friday 14th February (Mrs L Cochrane)

Whoosh!  There was a half term!  Time is flying!  Thank you to the children for all their hard work this term so far.  Apologies for the brief blog.  Unfortunately, I have not been in school today so don’t have all the information to hand.

Well done to Amelia who was our star mathematican this week; lots of extra maths done at home and some excellent reasoning in class too.

Boys will have forest schools on 26th Feb and 4th March.  Please come in warm out door clothes including layers and waterproofs with uniform to change into afterwards.  Mrs Eva had an excellent session with them this week.  We will be swimming from the first week back (Friday 28th February).

As part of our young leaders award we will be holding a cake sale to raise money for our New Horizon’s project.  This will be on Tuesday 3rd March at playtimes and after school.  If you are able to donate any cakes that would be brilliant.  Additionally, the children have come up with a selection of ideas to improve our local community and we are trying to source the following:

    • Small plastic bottles (e.g. water bottles)
    • Large 2litre plastic bottles
    • Bird seed
    • Dog waste bags
    • Children’s books in good condition to sell
    • Plant pots, any size
    • Flower seeds
    • Compost

If you are able to help us with any of the above, we would, as ever, be most grateful.

Over the holidays keep reading, can anyone recommend a good book to a friend?

Have a great half term holiday and a great rest

Mrs Cochrane and the year 5 team

  • Friday 7th February (Mrs L Cochrane)

Thank you to those parents who joined us for this afternoon’s brass recital; we hope you enjoyed it as much as the children enjoyed performing it.  It was an exciting afternoon with the performance and the cricket session.  These cricket sessions are proving to be very popular with the children.   They are really engaging with the different drills and activities that are being provided.

The plague cottage drawings are complete and I have to admit I am extremely impressed with the quality of the work.  I will try to put some on the blog for you to see. Children worked so hard on creating perspective and tone.  Really, really great work.

We have worked on some utterly hideous plague cures this week; some revolting ingredients have been included but all in all the instructions are looking pretty good.  We have used the Kahoot quizzes to revise the features of an instructional text and class 5 are confident with what needs to be included.  We have also used these quizzes in science where we are starting to learn the new vocabulary for our materials topic.  This is a brilliant unit – my personal favourite -we will be doing lots of experiments and scientific thinking.

In maths we have started fractions.  This unit will run for about 6 weeks, so lots to learn.  We have started with equivalent fractions and improper fractions.  Not everyone has found this easy.  I have set some tasks on mathletics that should help to consolidate this.  Please encourage your child not to panic if they find it tricky, we have plenty of time.  Good knowledge of times tables is essential for understanding in this topic.  If you know your child is a little shaky on some tables please encourage them onto TTRS to practise.  I gave out some optional practise slips at home time.  There will be merits for any returned but this is not compulsory.

Lois was our star writer this week; writing a brilliant piece about her experiences at Young Voices.  A huge well done to Lois.  Mathletics certificates today for Isla, Katie, Amelia, Soren and Kieran P, all of whom have earnt over 1000 points.  The reading raffle was won by Fin!  Well done to everyone who is really committing to reading at home.   There are many incentives to read regularly at home, please try to do this as much as possible.  We are striving for 30 tickets in the raffle! Year six are nearly there!surprise

    Homework is as follows

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday

    Have a great weekend

Mrs Cochrane, Miss Daley and Mrs Clayton

  • Friday 31st January (Mrs L Cochrane)

It’s been an exciting week in school, mainly due to the excitement created by the Young Voices experience.  A huge thank you to all the children who participated.  They showed real dedication in the lead up.  Thank you also to parents – all your support is greatly appreciated.  Thank you to Lilly and Freya who represented the girls’ football team at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

We have been working hard in art this week; creating pencil drawings of the plague cottages in Eyam.  We have worked on shading techniques and also creating perspective.  I hoping these will be completed next week, they will be proudly displayed by our artists!

For those children who didn’t attend the Young Voices we had an afternoon of den building.  What a lot of mud!!! Really sorry for the washing.  It’s fair to say that the children thoroughly enjoyed this.  We had a go at writing some instructions about how to build these creative structures!

In maths we completed our multiplication and division four-week unit this week.  Children are mostly getting the hang of the formal methods in these areas.  We did a mini quiz this week and I will send them home next week so you can see how your child got on.  If you would like to practise the techniques the calculation policy on the website models the methods used.  I have set some tasks on mathletics linked to this work. Next week we will be looking at fractions.

In English we have been researching some weird and wonderful plague cures:  a human excrement paste was one of the more disgusting!!!  Next week we are going to create our own remedies and write instructions on how to make them

Lots of Mathletics certificates today: well done to Ava, Chloe, Isla, Freya, Lois, Bella, Soren, Amelia, Jacob, Louie, Ethan and Kelan, all of whom have earnt over 1000 points.  Amelia came second in the whole school competition earning over 13000 points!!!!! Amazing work.   The reading raffle was won by Ethan and Isla!  Well done to everyone who is really committing to reading at home.  There were 16 tickets in the draw today!  I have again spoken to the class about how important it is to read at home.  This is a whole class target on the ice cream challenge!

    Homework is as follows

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday

    Have a great weekend

Mrs Cochrane and the year 5 team

  • Friday 24th January (Mrs L Cochrane)

What a hard-working week we have had in year 5!  I am so so pleased with the class,;they are really growing into year five.

On Monday afternoon we went to the memorial park to do a litter pick as part of our YLA – sorry about the muddy shoes!  We were amazed at how much letter we found, especially glass alcohol bottles.  The children have discussed making signs to display in the park to try to encourage people to put litter in the bins provided.  We also sorted the litter we found in order than it can be recycled. A big thank you to the volunteer who helped us with this important task.

In maths we have continued with our multiplication journey!  We have built up to multiplying 4 digits by 2 digits and in the main children are really confident with the method we are using.  Next week we are going to look at division and division with remainders.   As normal, there are relevant tasks set on mathletics.  TTRS will support with learning in this area also.  The cut off for the mathletics competition is Sunday night so any extra work would really go towards helping our class win the trophy – I believe we have some individuals in contention for an individual prize also!

We have done some art work this week, creating images of the plague cottages in Eyam.  Next week we will be redrafting and improving.  We are going to experiment with shading pencils and charcoal.  Our newspaper articles are finished – Mrs Clayton is doing a wonderful job of a display for these.  We have focussed on reading challenges this week, trying to work out the feelings of characters and pick up on the clues left by authors.  Next week we will be looking at instruction texts – we are going to design some tudor plague cures and we may also make some sikh sweets (linked to our discovery topic: Are sikh stories relevant today?)

Erin was our star mathematician today in celebration assembly.  She has should real dedication to using the new method and is very confident.  Mathletics certificates for Isla, Ethan, Chloe, Katie and Kieran P and Amelia.   The reading raffle was won by Isla!  Well done to everyone who is really committing to reading at home.  There were 15 tickets in the draw today!  I know I spoke to you all at parents evening regarding this, just to remind you that reading five times a week and recording this in their reading record will be ‘the bowl’ target on this term’s ice cream target challenge.  Obviously there will be weeks when this is not always possible but please aspire to do this regularly.  The impact of reading regularly makes such a difference to children’s attainment.  Thank you for your support with this.

Cricket and brass have been a popular as ever lots of talent in year 5!

    Homework is as follows

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday

Have a wonderful weekend and a well-earned rest!

  • Friday 10th January (Mrs L Cochrane)

Happy New Year 2020!  Welcome back to the spring term of All Saints.  We hope you have all have a relaxing and fun-filled break.

We have been so impressed with the children’s amazing attitude on their return to school, we have hit the ground running and all the children have given 100%.  Everyone made it to the sunshine today, for all round excellence!

Our new whole school topic is ‘Long, long ago…’.  During this topic we will be doing a local history study about the plague village of Eyam in Derbyshire.  We started to develop some history skills this week we learnt the difference between primary and secondary sources and also revised what is meant by chronology and chronological order.

This week and for the next two weeks we will be focussing on multiplication and division in maths.  I have set a couple of relevant tasks on mathletics.  Of course, TTRS will support with learning in this area also.

On Monday, we started our Archbishop of York Young Leaders award– this is a leadership course that year 5 will be working on over the next two terms it focusses on being active citizens and positive members of our community.  The website is very informative if you wish to take a look.

Mathletics certificates for Amelia and Isla.  A big well done for putting in that time over the holidays.  The reading raffle was won by Lilly!  Well done to everyone who is really committing to reading at home.  Regarding this, I would like to let parents know that reading five times a week and recording this in their reading record will be ‘the bowl’ target on this term’s ice cream target challenge.  Obviously there will be weeks when this is not always possible but please aspire to do this regularly.  The impact of reading regularly makes such a difference to children’s attainment.

I look forward to seeing you all at parents evenings next week.  If you have any questions or queries in the mean-time don’t hesitate to get in touch

    Homework is as follows

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday

  • Friday 20th December (Mrs L Cochrane)

Firstly, I would like to say a huge congratulations to all of class five.  The transition from year four to year 5 is notoriously challenging as so much new material is introduced and the level of challenge is increased but the children have worked with real determination.  Please take the holidays as an opportunity to have a good relax with family and friends there is no expectation for homework over the break if your child wishes to continue with Mathletics that’s wonderful but please don’t feel obliged.  Please do encourage reading as much as possible!

In Spring term our new topic will be ‘…Long, long, ago…’ We will be doing a local history study on the Derbyshire Village – Eyam.  Our class text will be ‘Kiss of Death’ by Malcolm Rose.

Thank you so much for all the generous Christmas gifts you have sent in for the team we are incredibly touched by your kindness and generosity.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  We look forward to welcoming the children back on 6th January for our Spring term.

    Best Wishes

Mrs Cochrane, Miss Daley and Mrs Clayton

  • Friday 13th December (Mrs L Cochrane)

The festivities are beginning! This week we were lucky enough to watch the KS1 nativity on Thursday.  And today we have had our termly ice cream party; lots of ice cream and Christmas dancing!

We have worked on our balanced argument in English; we have been writing about whether or not animals should be kept in captivity.  We have just got to write our conclusions... there are a lot of animal rights activists in class five!  Mathematically, we have worked on perimeter.  We have worked on the differences between measuring perimeter and calculating a perimeter.

Animals including Humans has been our half termly topic for science and we have completed this today.  This topic has looked at the human timeline/lifecycle.  We have looked at all the stages in a human lifecycle from conception through to old age.  On Thursday we spent time looking at adolescence and what changes happen to the human body.  The children approached this sensibly and asked some sensible questions.

Class five have represented us well in the community this week, from football tournaments to carol singing.  Next week we have the whole school cinema trip on Tuesday the Christmas party of Tuesday afternoon (please could you send in items from the letter which were highlighted).  We also have the carol service on Thursday evening and Friday afternoon.  If you are available to help walk on Friday afternoon this help would be very gratefully received.

Mathletics certificates for Ethan, Finley Amelia, Kelan, Henry, Isla and Jacob.  Well done to you all, we are so pleased with your effort.  The reading raffle was won by Amelia again! So much reading practise every week.  Well done to everyone who is really committing to reading at home.  We will be giving this even more importance in the New Year

    Homework is as follows

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday

    Have a great ‘christmasey’ weekend!

  • Friday 6th December (Mrs L Cochrane)

Thank you to all the support that was given to the school fair.  I hope those of you who attended had a truly festive couple of hours.  Thank you for all your contributions also!

We have started planning our balanced arguments in English this week.  We are intending on writing a balanced argument about whether animals should be kept in captivity.  Maths has been prime numbers and composite numbers we have also taken this this opportunity to revise factors and multiples.  The last two days we have been checking our ice cream targets in anticipation of the ice cream party at the end of term.  Some children need to revise lines on a globe e.g. equator, tropic of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic circle and Northern and Southern Hemisphere.

On Tuesday we went to visit the Holy Spirit Catholic church in Marple.  We looked for representations of the Holy Trinity.  The parish priest spoke to us about the importance of this mystery in our lives today.  It was a very interesting experience and the children made lots of interesting observations..

Class 5 were lucky enough to have a mystery reader yesterday.  Mr Kenna came to visit us.  He read a lovely selection of Christmas poems and a really lovely version of the Christmas story!   A huge thank you to him.  If anyone would like to volunteer as a mystery reader, please do contact us!

Well done to Ethan for being star writer, he has written a brilliant piece of fictional writing linked to ‘The Black Hat’.  Lots of fabulous vocabulary and brilliant effort with handwriting too.  Well done to Amelia, Jacob, Isla, Soren, Ava and Ethan who all earnt mathletics certificate.  The reading raffle was won by Kelan – well done for all your hard work and commitment to reading.  Well done to everyone who is really committing to reading at home.  This will really improve your reading stamina!  Please could you help your child to remember to bring in reading records in daily, but especially on Thursday and Fridays!

    Homework is as follows

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday

This afternoon we have repeated Pokemon yoga for strength and relaxation which the children enjoyed.  I'm hoping we will get more confident in the routine.  Parents evening letters have been sent out and those that have been returned have been allocated appointments.  Please send these in at your earliest convenience if you have not done so already.  Have a great weekend, it’s starting to get very festive.

This week has been assessment week and the children have worked with real resilience.  A huge well done to them all.  We have done assessments in English, Grammar, Spelling and Maths (Arithmetic and Reasoning).  The content was a mixture of Year 4 and the beginnings of year 5 work.

We have been writing a piece of fictional writing linked to the film clip ‘The Black Hat’.  This is available online for anyone who would like to watch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoKavOfPkwo

Class five have been working on describing settings and characters.  There have been some beautiful pieces written so far.

In Science we have been looking at causal relationships in data!!! Basically, this means one thing causes something else to happen.  We have been investigating a causal relationship between an animal’s mass and its gestation period.  Very impressive indeed! See if your child can explain this link to you!  What do they know about the mass of an animal and its gestation period?  The children even managed to plot their results on a scattergraph!

Well done to Ava for being star mathematician, she has shown real maturity in her assessments and has also shown a huge amount of commitment to her homework also.  Well done to Louie, Ava, Isla, Jacob, Ethan, and Amelia who all achieved 1000 points in mathletics and recieved certificates today.  Congratulations to Amelia who won the reading raffle – It’s wonderful to see how much reading practise you are doing at home.  Well done to everyone who is really committing to reading at home.  This will really improve your reading stamina!  We try to check reading records every Thursday/Friday.  Please could you help your child to remember to bring in reading records in daily, but especially on these days!

    Have a great weekend,

Mrs Cochrane and the year 5 team

  • Friday 22nd November (Mrs L Cochrane)

In class 5 this week we have been working exceptionally hard.  We have been very industrious getting through plenty of key skills; lots of fractions in maths (supporting tasks have been set in mathletics) and a start of a new unit Called the black hat in English.  We will be doing some fictional writing based on this movie clip next week then I am hoping we can move onto some balanced arguments about keeping animals in captivity and circus’.

We also started out new Science topic which is Animals including humans.  This unit focusses on the human life cycle and the changes that occur from birth to old age.  If you have any questions about this content, please do contact me.

The Trashion fashion show was a great hit and children did a brilliant job modelling their newly upcycled clothing.  These should have come home for you to see.  Even those of us who were nervous about this had a great go, I was really proud of the whole class.

We started brass this afternoon, so look out for instruments coming home.  This will run until into the new year.

Well done to Chloe for being star writer, she has written some excellent pieces but I was especially impressed with her t-shirt evaluation in DT.  Ethan, Jacob, Kelan, Isla, Amelia, Soren, Ava, for achieving mathletics certificates today.  Brilliant work from Isla who won the reading raffle – five weekly reads and brilliant comments, well done Isla.  We try to check reading records every Thursday/Friday.  Please could you help your child to remember to bring in reading records in daily, but especially on these days!

    Homework is as follows

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday

Next week is assessment week.  Children will be completing the year 5 NFER assessments in reading, maths, SPaG.  A lot of the content is revision from previous year’s objectives.  There will not be any pressure we just want children to give it their best.  It gives us helpful information to take children forward with their learning.

    Have a great weekend,

Mrs Cochrane and the year 5 team

  • Friday 15th November (Mrs L Cochrane)

This week has been anti-bullying week and we have spent a lot of time talking about what bullying is and how was can prevent it.  We have talked about our well-being and how we can make sure we are looking after ourselves as well as others.

This afternoon we have finished our upcycling products.  I am so impressed with what the chidlren have produced.  Once they have modelled them in the 'Trashion Show' next Tuesday they will be sent home for you to truely appreciate!

In maths we have worked on improper fractions for example 6/4.  We have worked on representing these in diagram and numeric form.  We have linked it to our work on factor and division to convert them into mixed numbers e.g. 1 and 2/4.

We have been finishing our Until I met Dudley explanation texts and these should.  Next week we will move on to some fiction writing linked to some Global Neighbours film clips.

Well done to Ameilia who has been made it onto the school's topic five leader board in timestable rockstars.  Also well done to Isla, Louie, Ethan, Finley, Lois, Ava, Amelia, Katie. • Friday 1st November (Mrs L Cochrane)

Welcome back to the second half of our autumn half term!

In class five this week we have been learning about explanation texts we have looked at what an explanation text should contain and looked at some funny examples from the book ‘Until I met Dudley’.  We have used the internet to research how rubber is made (think links to our class novel where the main character lives on a rubber plantation in the Amazon rainforest). Next week we will be trying to write our own explanation texts.

Maths has been shape, shape, shape!  Polygon’s, 3D, 2D nets… all in all we’ve made some good progress in this area.  I have set some task on mathletics linked to next week’s work which will be multiplication, division and fractions.

Topic work has been DT based and this will continue next week.  We have been researching and designing clothing for our trashion fashion show.  If you haven’t already, please send in an old t-shirt or trousers that your child can upcycle. We will be upcycling our clothing from the start of next week.  This is proving to be a really popular project – we even managed some whole class sewing!

We had a very informative assembly about bees yesterday, Mr Buckley came in to speak to all of the school about his fascinating hobby.  He really illustrated to the children the massively important role that bees play in our world today.

    Homework is as follows

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday

What an end to a great half term!  A huge well done to the whole class for making a superb start to their year five journey. They have been an absolute pleasure. Well done to Finley who was our super star in assembly today, fabulous work throughout the whole half term.  Well Done Fin.

This week it has been Church Week; there have been some wonderful activities available to the children.  Bell ringing, arts, singing, many fun and thought provoking games to name just a few.  A huge thank you to All Saints Church for running such an inspiring week.  Well done to all of those who participated and spectated this afternoon’s colour run, what a start to the half term holidays!  Happy washing everyone!

This week we have worked incredibly hard on 3D shape, we have looked at properties of the shapes and revised terms like face, edge, vertices.  We have also learnt what is really meant by the term 3D.  Some of us have tried to find the link between the number of sides of the 2D face of a prism and the number of edges/faces.  Something to continue investigating…

Please could you send in an item of clothing for your child to upcycle after the holidays (during the first week back please) The Trashion Show is Tuesday 19th November.  For this project children will be upcycling existing clothing.  We plan to do some sewing, adorning and decorating.  Children will get chance to model their pieces in the whole school ‘Trashion Show’.  We can upcycle lots of items such as shoes; t-shirts; leggings; football kits: The possibilities are endless!

Have a good break over the holidays, children have worked very hard and deserve it!  If you wish to continue with homework it is as follows.

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday. (there will be a spelling test on 30th Oct)

Please encourage your child to read over the holidays, fluent speedy and accurate reading takes a great deal of practise.

PE is on Thursdays and Fridays this half term, please note the change of day

Please note: Year 5 Class Assembly is Friday 8th November

    Have a great half term!

  • Friday 4th October (Mrs L Cochrane)

Today we a head teacher from Titherington High to visit in assembly.  We had six mathletics certificate in class 5 today; a huge well done to Ava, Isla, Katie, Freya, Louie and Henry.  Freya earned a staggering 5050 points in just one week! On Times Tables Rockstars this week Brooke, and Kelan have held on to their spaces on the top five leaders board.  We have had a prestigious gold mathletics award in class five also, well done to Isla.  I know we also have another pupil who will be awarded theirs next week.  Earning a gold mathletics certificate requires a huge amount of commitment so a huge well done.

This week in maths we have looked at numbers with two decimal places.  We have worked on multiplying an dividing these numbers by 10 and 100 by sliding the digits and adding the appropriate number of zeros.  I have set some work on this on mathletics.

Ten children had training in becoming a restorative ambassador.  We did have a lot of children volunteering for this role.  We took names from a hat.  There will be other jobs coming up throughout the year for those who weren’t chosen for this.  Next Tuesday we will be having our votes for Pupil Parliament.  If your child would like to represent the class in this role they will need to prepare a short speech to the class explaining why children should vote for them and what they would like to do for the class/school/community.

We have started the geography focus of our Global Neighbours topic.  We have been looking at world maps and revising the continents and oceans.  We have learnt about the equator, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.  Also we have looked at the climate zones in that run in belts around the world.  We have talked about why climates appear from west to east rather than north to south.  This afternoon we made 3D papier mache globes.  Next week we will be using wool to mark of the important ‘lines’ on the world.

We have completed our research on Brazil and worked on notetaking skills.  Next week we will be working on how to change these notes into paragraphs for our own non-fiction books about Brazil.  We are making good progress with our class novel.  The main character Maia is eventually being able to explore the Amazon forest.

Reminder:  The Trashion Show is Tuesday 19th November. Please could you start to think about an item of clothing your child may be able to use.  This doesn’t need to be brought into school just let but I wanted to give you plenty of notice.

    Homework is as follows:

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday.

We took the reading raffle today well done to our winner, Lilly.  Please encourage your child to read five times per week and record this in their reading record book. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this.  Today children should have brought home a year 5 arithmetic test and a Science assessment to share with you.  Feel free to go through these with your child if you wish.

PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays this half term

    Have a great weekend,

  • Friday 27th September (Mrs L Cochrane)

Well done to Jacob, our newest member of the class, who was awarded star mathematician of the week; constant enthusiasm and hard work in all sessions.  Seven mathletics certificate in class 5 today; a huge well done to Ava, Finley, Louie, Leila, Amelia, Freya and Bella.  Another week on the top of the timetable Rockstars leader board for Brooke, Louie and Kelan.  Well done to you all.

This week in maths we have looked at addition and subtraction.  We have been revising using formal written methods (e.g. column addition/subtraction).  We have talked about quicker ways to calculate answers for example adding numbers to ten then working on from there, doubling, halving and adjusting can all be helpful too.

In Science we have finished our Living things and their habitats topic.  This afternoon we looked at our reproduction of plants experiment and learnt how plant can be reproduced in two different ways.  We also had a brief look at a bird’s lifecycle and the structure of chicken eggs.  Class five produced some accurate water colours of this structure.

Yesterday was language day, we worked on the country of Thailand.  We were visited by Mr Jantong, a parent from year 2.  He spoke to us about his beautiful country and taught us some basic Thai phrases too.  Children have each made a Thai flag, the have recorded some phases to practise at home!  We tried some coconut sticky rice which had a mixed response!

We have started to work on our next text type which will be report writing – more specifically non-fiction books.  We are planning to produce some information books about South America/Brazil/The Amazon linked to our class text.  If anyone has any reference books (atlases/animal books etc) about any of these areas and is able to send them in that would be very helpful.  Additionally, if you child would like to don’t some research at home and bring this in, that also, would be very helpful.

The Trashion Show is Tuesday 19th November.  For this project children will be upcycling existing clothing.  We plan to do some sewing, adorning and decorating.  Children will get chance to model their pieces in the whole school ‘Trashion Show’.  We can upcycle lots of items such as shoes,  t-shirts, leggings, football kits, the possibilities are endless!

Mathletics has some relevant tasks for children to attempt Well done to those children who are already actively using their reading records. We took the reading raffle today well done to our winner, Isla.  Please encourage your child to read five times per week and record this in their reading record book. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this.

I sent home a letter about a samba drumming workshop for Wednesday 13th November, quite a few children forgot their letters so if you don’t have one please let me know and I’ll send one home.

PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays this half term

    Have a great weekend,

    Mrs Cochrane

  • Friday 20th September (Mrs L Cochrane)

We are really getting into the swing of year 5!  Our second full week is completed.  It has been a busy week.  Firstly, to celebrate the successes in the class.  Well done to Louie and Kelan who were chosen as this weeks’ star mathematicians.  They had completed a challenging task of creating greater than/less than sentences using two digit by two digit multiplications.  Fantastically, we had eight mathletics certificate in class 5 today.  A huge well done to Isla, Leila, Amelia, Freya, Katie, Ava, Louie and Lois.  Another shout out to Brooke, Louie and Kelan for being on the top five leader board in Timestables Rockstars.  Finally, Louie earnt his Gold mathletics certificate; this is a massive achievement and we are so proud of you.

In maths we have continued our work on place value.   This week we have been looking at greater than and less than in six digit numbers.  We have also looked at how numbers change when we increase them 10,100 or 1000.  In English we have been completing our persuasive letters regarding plastic pollution.  These are, in the main, finished and ready to be posted.  We are going to address envelopes next week.  Talking to your child about how to do this would be helpful if you have time.

In Science we have looked at the lifecycle of different animals, today we looked at the lifecycle of a duck-billed platypus – a most unique creature.  Can your child tell you what type of animal it is and why it is an exception?

Next Thursday is language day, we have been asked to explore Thailand.  We have a visitor from Thailand coming to speak to us and we will be learning a bit about the culture, traditions and geography of this beautiful country.

Children have a year 5 arithmetic test in their bags that they completed today and also their spelling book so you can see how they got on in this week’s test.  Please, please return these books by next Wednesday.  One merit for everyone who remembers and an extra class playtime if everyone does!

    Homework is as follows:

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday.

Mathletics has some more place value tasks saved for children to attempt and also some on measures (which is always important to keep revisiting). Well done to those children who are already actively using their reading records. We took the reading raffle today well done to our winner, James.  Please encourage your child to read five times per week and record this in their reading record book. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this.

PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays this half term

  • Friday 13th September (Mrs L Cochrane)

Our first week is completed – well done to all the children, they have worked so hard and have made a fantastic start to year 5.  Well done to Soren who was our first star writer.  He wrote a very powerful paragraph to the government about their stance on plastic!

In maths we have been learning about place value.  In year five we look at numbers up to one million, so far we are up to hundred thousand!  We have also revised some Roman numerals.  We had a maths specialist teacher in school on Wednesday.  Mr Reddy did some hands on practical fractions which the children really seemed to enjoy!

In English we have been learning about how to write persuasive letters.  We are writing to large companies, local people and even Boris Johnson about the effect of plastic pollution.  The children were really knowledgeable about this important issue.

We have been looking at all things plant related in topic.  We have dissected a plant and found the specific parts, we have talked about the specific jobs each part does.  We have also tried to produce plants ‘asexually’ by taking cuttings of different parts in the hope we are able to reproduce the plant.  We had a fun dance lesson on Tuesday (this will continue weekly).  We will be learning some South American dancing linked to our Global Neighbours topic.  Carnival time in time for ‘Strictly’!

In year five homework is much the same as previous years.

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday.

I have updated tasks on mathletics linked to this week’s work. Well done to those children who are already actively using their reading records. We took the reading raffle today well done to our winner, Charlie. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this.

PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays this half term.

Enjoy the ‘Tour of Great Britain’ if you manage to spectate

    Best Wishes

Mrs Cochrane and year 5 team

  • Friday 6th September (Mrs L Cochrane)

A huge welcome to class 5!  What an excellent start the children have made.

The children have settled so quickly and have really shown me what a super bunch of hard workers they really are.

This week we have been getting to know each other and learning the routines in the classroom.  We have done some Maths and English key skills.  Our big project this week has been the class frieze that we are trying to produce for our RE books.  Children have been working in teams of four to make collages linked to a key word.  They are looking super.  We will display them in the windows for you to see, once they are completed.

We really enjoyed our scavenger hunt yesterday.  We used our maths skills to find different items of a variety of measures for example a twig that was exactly 20cm long (no rulers allowed!).  We also used our general knowledge to find trees and name them and our problem solving skills to locate things like ‘something that’s cannot have its height, width or length measured’.  Well done to Ava, Isla, Bella and Katie who were our winning team.

    Homework

In year five homework is much the same as previous years.

    • 10 mins of reading five times per week
    • 1000 points on Mathletics, weekly
    • Spelling practise for test each Wednesday.

I have set a few tasks on mathletics that I think will be a good starting point for the children.  Well done to those children who are already actively using their reading records. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this.

PE is on Thursday and Friday’s this half term.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. I will look forward to our first full week.  We will be investigating environmental issues in our community and starting to write letters to a selection of people in the hope we can make some positive changes.

    Best Wishes

    Mrs Cochrane

  • Friday 19th July (Mr McShane)

Hi everyone this is Archie and Archie.

This week has been full of surprises such as writing letters to our buddies then meeting them for the first time. Over the last two weeks with Mr Bailey we have been doing a course called CAP, which stands for Christians Against Poverty. We learnt about debt, income and expenditure. There were three teams competed for the most points over the space of two weeks and the prizes we chose were maths puzzles.

Also next week the leavers/young leaders church service starts at 1:45 PM on Wednesday 24th. We would be grateful if you could bring in some cans of food that could sit in a cupboard. All donations will go to connect centre thank you.

  • Friday 5th July (Mr McShane)

This week has been a little off our usual timetable but we have learnt so much along the way.

After designing our burgers we visited Asda to purchase all our ingredients - the children took the lead and did all the hunting up the aisles, working out the best deals. The shop assistants said how wonderfully polite they were which made me very proud.

The following day we learnt peeling, chopping, cutting (some tears due to the onions), mashing and combining skills as we put our individual burgers together (Yes, 31 different burger combinations!!)

The children were brilliantly creative and our veggie burgers went down a storm... mostly wink  Some had mashed sweet potato, mashed chick peas, kidney beans, garlic, chilli flakes, crumb coverings and many different ideas - some even hid cheese in the centre so it melted in the oven. Yummy!! All the toppings you could imagine accompanyed them and we costed the burgers at approx £1 each. We even had our own burger boxes with designer labels on them!!!

In maths we have concentrated on misisng angles and this site may be of help.https://www.mathsisfun.com/angle180.html
Today was just awesome with our circus skills, family picnic, a class game of rounders and our Summer fair.

Next week we have a special Money Course led by Mr. Bailey and our decorated plates are finally ready to come home, so look out for them.

Remember we have PE on Monday afternoon.

    Enjoy the weekend everyone.

  • Friday 21st June (Mr McShane)

This week has been a thrilling week.

We have been working towards making our very own veggie burgers! We have also just started our new novel called Aquila

We have also been working on our writing called Junk which has been really fun! In maths we have been working on the volume of a shape and we did our spellings and there were some really good scores this week and 8 people ( Isabelle, Rachel, Maddy,  Alex, Kieran, Zac, and Archie.M, Leona) went to a maths competion at Stockport Grammar and did extremely well. 2 other people ( Ben and Rory) went to meet the Veterans at Stockport Town Hall. And for our Young Leaders Award we are collecting tins for Connect in Marple, if you have any spare tins please bring them in.

    By Tia and Isabelle xx

make sure do practise your spellings and have a good weekend!

  • Friday 14th June (Mr McShane)

Well, it is report writing season and I am having fun putting together my thoughts and opinions on the children...coincidentally the behaviour and work rate has been great this week - how strange!! wink

We managed to complete our class novel today - an emotional end to a fabulous book. We look forward to starting our new one already.

In maths we have looked at 'Sometimes, Always, Never' and 'Find My Divisor'..both reasoning activities that have got us scratching our heads a little but the resilience has been strong.

We have made progress with our art (junk plates) and also our junk writing...that is the name of it, not the standard!

In ICT we have been trying to create a logo for our veggie burgers that we will soon be making.  This week has been the product testing stage - the response to a few taste tests have been mixed.

In discovery we went quite deep in thought this afternoon, asking 'are we making the planet a better place with our existence?'.  It got some really interesting debate going and we used the Lord's Prayer as a way of looking at what Christians believe our role should be.  We are trying to write a simpler version of this prayer for KS1.

    ................................................................

Next week I am displaying some Year 5 and 6 World War work at the Town Hall (Thursday 20th).  If any children still have any of their models, trenches or memorabilia they could bring in early next week I will be able to proudly display it.

You should have some blank data forms handed out.  It is vital that we keep up-to-date records of phone numbers, allergies, dietary requirements, medical needs and so forth.  Please can all forms be returned to school next week.

  • Friday 24th May (Mr McShane)

What an energetic way to end the half term.  Too much to mention but highlights included rounders, football skills (with Stockport County), Scoot fit, dance, rugby and our high intensity Sports Day...wow, I am shattered!! blush

In art we have been working on our porcelain plates - creating our junk art...it is a very tricky process but going well so far and in Science we managed to filter dirty water into clean which was very impressive.

I hope each and every one of you has a fantastic half term.yes Thank you for your continued support.

    Homework:

    Just keep on reading!! cool

  • Friday 10th May (Mr McShane)

Another jam-packed week in Year 5.

In Science this week the children designed their own investigation following on from our soluble or insoluble lesson last week.  Some decided to see if the temperature of the water changes the results or if rock salt, sea salt and table salt all act the same when mixed with water.  It was great to see the children plan and carry out their own investigations.

For swimming this week the children learned the importance of keeping warm if they ever find themselves in water difficulty, something really important when living in Marple with the lovely canals.  The children wore their pyjamas or T-shirts and had to keep moving in the water for a really long time!  They did ever so well.

It will be our last lesson next week (Friday 17th May).

As it has been assessment week we have managed to get through some of our papers but we still have a humble few to complete next week.  The attitude has been tremendous.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-catJZm_2TI  Here is a little video to support with our work on FANBOYS (coordinating conjunctions) and also a link to a website that will support our understanding of biomes which we have started to look at in Geography.https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/articles/zvsp92p

We are still collecting plastic bottles so we can create our own filtering systems and any food labels that show the country of origin would be really useful too!

    Homework:

I was really proud when leading the celebration assembly on Friday to see a bounteous amount of Year 5 pupils standing with their Mathletics or Spellodrome certificates, well done one and all. yes

Please keep reading and commentating in your reading records.  Your weekly spellings are following the able or ible rule  - work hard on them, trust me they are enjoyable to learn and you will become invincible!

Have a lovely weekend everyone....no bickering or gloating over City, Liverpool or United come Monday morning please!wink  Enjoy the Stockport County parade if you going to that too!!

  • Friday 3rd May (Mr McShane)

On Monday Year 5 visited New Horizons to plant-out the flowers we have been nurturing in class.  It was a lovely morning and our own small way to support a local charity.  We are hoping to visit again soon to see how well our plants are growing and maybe even go on the canal boat.

In Science this week we investigated what materials were soluble or insoluble.

One or two were tricky to decide on.

We have really enjoyed getting to know Bradley Chalkers this week - he is a character who brings lots of laughs but also pulls on our heart strings a little.

In maths we have focused on word problems; breaking them down into manageable chunks and making sure we understand what maths is involved.  Checking the answer seems sensible is something we have also been checking carefully!

I have been really impressed with the spelling recently - lots of extra effort going into learning the weekly words and rules.  Please continue this as it is so important that we remember these spelling rules not just for a one-off test.

Next week sees the start of our assessment week.  The school day will be as normal as possible.  Hopefully the children will do as they usually do and take it all in their stride.

We have two weeks of swimming lessons left.  Next Friday (10th May) we need to bring a light T-shirt and shorts or some light pyjamas. No clothing that will get heavy wet such as jeans or a Onesie! Children will still need their swimming costume underneath - we do not want any embarrassing situations. blush

Enjoy a long weekend everybody! smiley

    Homework:

Keep reading and recording those comments, try and get on Times Tables Rockstars and Mathletics (maybe Spag.com).

  • Friday 26th April (Mr McShane)

    Welcome back everybody!

A short blog this week as the termly curriculum letter has gone home today (also attached to our class page with plenty of information for you all Year 5 related).  New spellings have also gone home.cool

This week we have been making sandwiches in our French lesson, juicing a variety of fruit and vegetables and then sampling them and mixing them as part of our maths (ratio) and knowledge of food miles, whilst also generating some descriptive language such as sharp, bitter, sour, earthy and even ambrosial!

In PE today we started our Elvis inspired dance routines and have been deep into our new novel too.

Next week we plan to visit New Horizons to plant our flowers - please bring any in that you have been caring for or would like to donate.  Homework will be checked carefully so learn your spellings, read five times in a week and aim for your 1000 points (or equivalent) on Mathletics.  We also start swimming again on Friday.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

  • Friday 5th April (Mr McShane)

What a lovely way to end our term with that fabulous Easter Service. Who knew so many people played a part in the crucifixion of Jesus?!

This week has been a little hectic and even dramatic! A Viking raided our classroom on Tuesday   - trashing all in his way.  This helped us learn about the Lindisfarne raids on the Holy Island…very brutal.

We finished our video and corresponding writing on The Saga of Bjorn and really enjoyed seeing how Bjorn ended up in Heaven rather than Valhalla! It was a great, comedy twist.

In maths we looked at capacity, ensuring we know that there are 1000ml in a litre. No water was wasted as we used it to water our plants that are growing well for New Horizons (some seeds went home, lets see who can get them to grow healthy ready to plant at our local charity!).

If you could support our maths by asking children to check the labels on bottles and cartons, ask them to measure required amounts for your cooking, see if they can work out how much more will be needed to fill the container etc. it would be really beneficial.

Amongst all the bottles, PE kits and rogue jumpers we have sent home today you should find an unmarked version of our Roads End stories so you can enjoy the story without my scribbles and annotations! I hope you agree the language and ideas are really coming along nicely.  I am very proud of the class for working so unbelievably hard on this.   You will notice certain spelling or punctuation errors amongst the wonderful content but I am really pleased that the extended writing makes sense and is a joy to read.  We will work further on our grammar and punctuation in the summer terms.  I have set some SPAG.com tasks for possible use over the Easter holidays which may help.

This week also saw us enjoy our ice-cream and fruit challenge reward party and our Easter Eggstravaganza.

May I take this opportunity to say thank you for all your support this term, it really is appreciated. Have a happy and healthy Easter break.

  • Friday 29th March (Mr McShane)

One more week to go before we all have a well-deserved rest! I have been super impressed by how hard the children have been working recently.

Our classroom is becoming somewhat of an allotment as we grow lots of plants for New Horizons…we have re-potted our Sunflowers as they germinated really quickly and are starting to sprout up.

For numeracy this week we have continued with fractions; adding them; subtracting them; and converting from improper to mixed numbers.  We ended the week on some Viking problem solving.

Lots of Mathletics and Spellodrome certificates were awarded today which was very pleasing…keep them coming!!

https://www.mathsisfun.com/improper-fractions.html   Extra support can be found here.

As part of our ICT we have been using Adobe Spark to create presentations on Roads End and in Literacy we have been writing our own mini-versions of Bjorn’s Saga; a comical tale of a Viking struggling to get to Valhalla.

In Science we have researched and compared different birds; using a Venn diagram to look at similarities and differences of their life cycle.

In PE we played foxes and rabbits and discussed how this mirrored a balanced eco-system, using terms such as predator and prey.

It is our Easter Service on Friday and you are all welcome to attend (due to start at 1:45) Many of the children have lines to learn.  Due to this there is NO swimming.

    Homework:

Any Easter Eggstravaganza entries need to be in school by Tuesday 2nd of March yes

    Mathletics/Spellodrome/daily reading.

Rehearse any Ice-Cream challenge targets you may not have yet achieved if you plan on getting another scoop!

  • Friday 22nd March (Mr McShane)

This week we have continued to be independent and resilient learners.  Our maths work has been tricky: converting improper fractions into mixed numbers and vice versa; solving fraction related word problems; and adding/subtracting fractions too.  Mathletics work this week has been set with fractions to help you.

In Literacy we have focused on our silent letters in words such as: knight, lamb, island and even knickers!  It is vitally important children spend quality time learning their spellings at home regularly- not just the day before the test or retention of them may not be there.  Our novel (Viking Blood) continues to teach us much about the Vikings and

We had a team challenge this week involving some drain pipes and tennis balls – to very limited success.  Slow and steady wins the race was the message learnt!

In Discovery we have been delving deep into ‘Salvation’ and what it really means, looking at the lead up to the death of Jesus and asking who was responsible.  Some of us have words to learn for our Easter Service.

We were lucky today to have some special visitors in school.  So much to mention however, the assembly by Daniel, a young man who broke his neck and is now in a wheelchair was truly inspiring and unforgettable.    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-45169657  A link to his story can be found here.

We ended the week with another great session of swimming - the children really coming along well.

    Have a super weekend everyone.

    Homework:

Please continue to read everyday, collect 1000 Mathletics or Spellodrome points (please write your points in your reading record).  Try and find time for SPAG.com and remember to learn your words with silent letters.

  • Friday 15th March (Mr McShane)

I must start by saying how brilliant the children were on Monday at our Media City Philharmonic experience.  To travel by train and tram, through a busy Manchester Piccadilly station, is not easy but the children were an absolute credit to their families.  It was superb to see such a talented orchestra up close, open our ears to a new experience and have the music explained to us so well by the fantastic host.  So many tunes to mention but a favourite of many was by Edvard Greig about a boy being captured by trolls.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/1rpRf1Q7cK683F9LlwqTb5x/in-the-hall-of-the-mountain-king-by-edvard-grieg Hopefully this may inspire one or two to pick up an instrument as the BBC Philharmonic travel all over the world performing.  A huge thanks to Mrs. Gadd and Mrs. Monds who supported us on this excellent outing.angel

In class our descriptive writing really is coming along.  Here is a little video Archie and Kieran helped me with showcasing some new technology but also a sample of their fantastic writing. https://spark.adobe.com/video/b0D2BmGxouVWm

In Science we have been classifying using branching diagrams and looking at mammals including their gestation periods...fascinating!

Have a lovely weekend.  See you on Monday.

    Homework

Mathletics, Spellodrome, reading for pleasure, learning of spellings and if you fancy having a look at our new resource (Spag.com) then feel free!! yes

  • Friday 8th March (Mr McShane)

This week has gone by so quickly.  I must start with a huge congratulations for your world Book day costumes on Thursday.  So much creativity and effort, well done to you all.  We played a quiz involving lots of authors and famous story characters which was very competitive, largely due to the winners getting a week off homework!! (I must have been feeling very generous that day as this is very out of character!!surprise)

Our stories continue to develop; with Oliver M winning this weeks star writer award for his clever description, well done yes.  We have been trying to incorporate movement and a range of Alan Peat sentences.  Follow this link to find a whole range of new ways of constructing a sentence. http://childokeford.dorset.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/Alan-Peats-Sentences-Structures.pdf

On Monday a selection of us visited New Horizons to discover what we can do for them (as part of our Young Leaders Award) and we have lots of planting and growing to do so we can get their location into full bloom.  We can't wait to get started.  If any families would like to donate any compost, potting soil etc then next week is the ideal time, any donations greatly received.  To find out more about New Horizons please visit https://www.newhorizons.org.uk/

On Tuesday Rev Daniel Curry visited us to talk the class all about being a great leader and he also had some options of how we could help the community.  We can see we are going to be extremely busy!!angel

Maths has been all about angles this week, learning how to use an angle measurer well - not as easy as it looks.https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/78/itp-calcangles Try this link for support.

REMEMBER we are on a Trip on Monday to BBC Media City.  Please be in school at the usual time, wearing your full school uniform, a coat and a packed lunch (ideally in a small rucksack).  No need to worry about remembering your reading records on this particular day.

    Have a lovely weekend everyone.

  • Friday 1st March (Mr McShane)

This week has flown by! We ended it today with our first splash in the pool!

In Discovery we have been sequencing a range of art work linked to the days of Jesus' trial, Crucifixion and Resurrection. It was rather tricky in places however we had lots of prior knowledge to build upon.  This picture by Caravaggio, we think, shows Jesus being kissed on the cheek by Judas in the betrayal.  The guards then take him away to face trial.  We did our own freeze frames to represent various stages of the significant events.

Let loose with a pen and their imagination, the children have been creating some very exciting stories in Literacy, albeit a little mysterious in places.  We are hoping to work on them for another week or so we have something to be immensely proud of.  Our star writer this week was Aleah, well done you!!  yes  Please encourage your child to find ambitious language from books at home that they could incorporate into their story.

In other news, we have started our new novel,  which is so far quite exciting and full of information about the life of a viking.

For your homework I expect you to have a look at your Arithmetic paper from today (work on the questions you didn't quite manage) and also visit Spellodrome and Mathletics, read each day and work hard on your spelling rules.  Why not have a look at the following game to help you with 3d shapes?  https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?a=activity20

    Have a splendid weekend everybody.

  • Friday 8th February (Mr McShane)

A week to remember in Year 5.  I am beaming with pride with the afternoon we have just had.  Year 5 made the 20 min walk down to Arbour Court Care Home where they treated the residents to some brass and singing.  It was really rather touching and the children were so considerate and respectful. Bravo!yes

cryingOn Thursday we sadly said goodbye to Miss. Pollit as she prepares for her new school placement.  We are all so very grateful for her efforts with us and sent her with many well-wishes, gifts and memories.

This week has also been our assessment week.  We didn't quite pack them all in so we will complete one more next week (reading) but the effort, attitude and commitment cannot be faulted.  https://www.theschoolrun.com/sats-revision-KS2-english-helper This link might be helpful as you prepare.

In Science we have been looking at the life cycle of a plant and will now extend this to looking at the life cycle of an insect, mammal or bird.

A big improvement on reading records this week, well done to both Finn and Evan who won the raffle (it was definitely not a fix!!)

Only one more week to go everyone!! Enjoy your weekend.

    Homework:

Plenty of reading.  Time on Mathletics or Spellodrome and learn those weekly spellings please.

  • Friday 1st February (Mr McShane)

Year 5 have received some letters back this week, from from Rev Daniel Currie seeing how we can collaborate as part of our Young Leaders Award and also one from Eddie the Eagle himself answering the children's though-provoking questions! yes

The class have been improving their mental maths skills with our Mathletics competition, there have been some great scores this week, well done everyone and keep it up - it really does make a difference! Isabelle won our star writer this week with some very vivid descriptions 'Billows of smoke wrapped around them like a snake.  The smell of smoke and sulphur made Tiro and Naledi choke. In the crowded, claustrophobic city there were skyscrapers that nearly touch the sky; traffic lights changing from red to green and queues of traffic.'

In Science we have been looking at seed dispersal.  https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/clips/znvfb9q Many different seeds travel away from the parent plant to give a better chance of survival.  We sorted seeds into various categories and looked at examples such as poppy which have a 'pepper pot' effect of seed dispersal.

Next Thursday is sadly Miss. Pollit's last day with us at All Saints'.  She continues her training at a new school so she has a full range of experiences under her belt.  Miss. Pollit has been a tremendous help to have and it has been lovely to share the classroom with her.  The children have really benefited from her commitment, enthusiasm and love for teaching and will undoubtedly miss her.

Next week is assement week in school.  Absolutely nothing to worry about.  It is a chance for children to show off their knowledge and learning so far.  We will carry out our assessments in the All Saints' way and use any results to help inform our planning and support the children with what they need.

    Have a great weekend everyone...wrap up warm!!!surprise

    Homework:

Please continue to read a minimum of 5 times a week and record comments in your reading record.  Aim to score 1000 points on Mathletics or Spellodrome.

Why not try a Young Leaders Award home challenge such as: clear a neighbours path of snow, sweep some leaves for a relative or elderly neighbour, offer to do the washing up etc.

If you are able to get your hands on any bulbs or seeds we will aim to plant them in school next week.

  • Friday 25th January (Mr McShane)

A hectic but fruitful week in Year 5.  Firstly, thank you to all the parents and carers who made it for parents evening - it was lovely to share how well the children are doing with you and explain what they now need to focus on as they move forwards in Year 5.

We were excited to receive our first response from our letters into the community.  A beautiful, hand written letter was delivered this week from Rectory Court stating 'we all appreciate your kind and thoughtful intentions'  and 'you are obviously such thoughtful and versatile young people'.  We will discuss where we can support this group of residents in the coming weeks.

In writing this week the children have been focusing on diary writing linked to our novel Journey to Jo'Burg.  They have also been doing some tricky comprehension based around the opening chapters, looking to justify their opinions based on evidence from the text.

Martin Luther King was studied on Monday, he was a great leader who made a significant impact on the world.  The children are now starting to find the links between him, Mandela and their own Young Leaders Award.

In maths we have looked at a range of concepts including fractions and percentages but also played a game where we had to multiply or divide whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100, 1000 or even 20!   (how could you quickly multiply or divide by 40?)

In art we have started to look at proportion and are doing really well in creating realistic shapes and sizes.  I am excited to see what our finished results will look like!

Monopoly club started over lunch today and proved very popular...a fair fight for Mayfair property!! surprise

    Homework:

Reading and recording your comments in your reading record - please ensure you are challenging yourself with your texts and are spending enough time daily on a good read.

Spellings this week are tricky so again please spend the required time and effort on them so you learn them for life and not just the test!!

Finally, aim for 1000 Mathletics points or work in your booklets that were sent home (I have set some tasks...if you struggle please come and see me or use Homework club on a Wednesday morning for further support).

    Have a lovely weekend everyone.

  • Friday 18th January (Mr McShane)

This week we have been super busy finishing with an eclectic but excellent assembly showcasing much of our work.  The children did ever so well; performing to a packed audience.  It was lovely to see so many proud parents listen to you and see how you are growing and maturing.  Lots of clear lines were remembered and some super brass, singing and acting - well done!!

Earlier in the week, after finishing our letters to various community projects (such as Church, OAP home and Charity Shops) we went on a walk - to deliver them by hand - and decided to pick up litter en route to help improve the community.  We managed to fill two bin bags which is quite shocking really.

We also held a film night raising lots of money for Compassion...again the children did this as part of their Young Leaders Award.

In maths we have been focusing on fractions and calculating with time.  Please encourage your child to read the time at all intervals, asking questions such as 'when will this film finish if it lasts for two hours?' 'If the taxi takes half an hour what time will we arrive?' 'Why have I burnt the oven chips?!!' surprise

Phew, that's it for another week. yes  Enjoy your weekend everybody.  Keep on reading and revising on Mathletics or Times Tables Rock Stars.https://ttrockstars.com/  (Search by postcode to find our school...SK6 7BQ)

    * It might seem a long way off but Robin Wood information and letters have gone out today*

  • Friday 4th January (Mr McShane)

Welcome back everyone, I hope you have had a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year to you all. Here's to a great 2019 yes

Our first two days back and we have covered lots in maths already, we have been finding fractions of amounts and have even delved into equivalent fractions and percentages.

Divide by the bottom and times by the top is a good rule of thumb, so to find 3/5 of 30 you divide 30 by the bottom number or denominator (In this example it is 5).  So 30 divided by 5 = 6.  You now multiply by the top number of your fraction (numerator) in this case 3.

    So 6 x 3 = 18!

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/fractions-and-decimals  a link to some useful games to support you and I have set challenges on Mathletics too.

Ollie J won our mathematician of the week for his enquiry and aptitude and the whole class have shown plenty of enthusiasm.

During this short week we have started piecing together something for our class assembly.  It is on the18th January at 9:05 and you are all welcome to attend.

    Next week:

As part of our Young Leaders Award we plan to walk in the local community to see if we can contribute to making a difference.  We have started some sketch maps to help us.

On Monday please remember to dress as your significant person or at least write a speech about someone inspiring/tell us why you have chosen them.

Plenty of reading please (spellings will go home next week).

  • Friday 14th December (Mr McShane)

This week has been great for many reasons.  We have almost finished our World War trenches (they look awesome!) and we have been designing our own army barracks in maths using our knowledge of area and perimeter, including the area of a parallelogram.

https://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/parallelogram.html  yes This site may be useful.

In Discovery the class have been working hard on a modern telling of the Christmas story...involving hover boards and floating hotels!

We ended our week with our Christmas party.  Lots of fun, dancing, singing, a few games and plenty of party snacks! It was a lovely way to 'nearly' end a wonderful term in Year 5.

Next week will be another busy one as we have our carol service (X 2) our Ice-cream party and many other end of term bits and bobs.

Have a great weekend everyone.  Please keep reading and get on Mathletics this weekend if possible.  smiley

    Mr. Mcshane

  • Friday 7th December (Mr McShane)

Year 5 have had a very special visitor today in the form of Josh's Grandad.  It was really great to see how our topic this term has had an impact on a family.  Josh's grandad told us all about his grandad and his part in World War One- lots of the information was new to him and Josh had sparked the interest and research into his family past.  It was a great start to the school day, thank you. yes

In maths this week Year 5 have been working incredibly hard on area, perimeter and decimal numbers.  We used Google Earth to find then measure the area and perimeter of RAF runways and then worked out the perimeter for other buildings and formations such as The Pentagon and military formations.

For example, if this Military Square has a perimeter of 80.44m then what is one length in meters? frown

If one of The Pentagon's walls has a measurement of 121.5 meters what would the perimeter be?! cool Answers on a postcard...or an email.

Here is a video from our brass lesson (I was hiding at the back of the room with my earphones on!)

enlightenedOur star mathematician this week was Reagan - she has been helping her younger sister with her maths and trying really hard herself in class.

    Have a lovely weekend everyone.

    Next week:

You should have had a Christmas Party letter this week, we will have our party on Friday but we will STILL have brass!!

Please keep attempting the challenges on Mathletics - our early enthusiasm seems to be dwindling  sad.  I have set some tasks related to our current maths topic.

Young Leaders Award : Will you be able to complete a worthwhile challenge within the house or local community?

  • Friday 30th November (Mr McShane)

This week has been another hectic one.  We have been working hard in literacy on our descriptive war pieces linked to a short animation.  In particular we have tried fronted adverbials of place.

e.g: On a high branch, a great horned owl kept watch.

In the distance, beyond the valley, huge towers of rock rose into the air.

    Here is a tiny flavour...

Silence in the blood-red battlefield not a single bullet whizzed past my ear but then 'Pow, Pow, pow'....By Evan

The artillery shots were getting more and more intense by lights out...by Isabelle

"God protect me," I a,bled to the surface, readied my machine gun, loaded in the clip and waited on my Gernerals orders to open fire....by Zac.

I really didn't want to step onto the battlefield because I didn't know what was going to happen or if I was going to panic, or get killed..by Archie H.

Year 5 have shown a superb attitude with the assessments this week.  They were certainly not easy but the children did their best and showed great resilience. The biggest stumbling block appears to be getting through the paper in the required time so we will need to work on our stamina and speed.

As part of our Young Leaders' Award we looked at what great leadership needs.  We had to do a cup challenge without using our hands and clear communication, great listening and team work were of high importance.

On Friday it was nice to have such a busy classroom as parents joined us for some Christmas crafts.  We attempted some 3D pop up cards that incorporated measure and shape and a range of skills, we were very happy with the outcome.  Thank you for all the adult hands that supported us with this tricky task and I hope you agree that the class is a very hardworking and ever maturing one. yes

We had the radio in this week (High Peak Radio) who were going to record my beautiful singing voice but instead they recorded all the children singing Christmas Carols.  Get listening to the station and get voting as this is part of a competition!!

We ended the week with our brilliant brass lesson!!

    Homework: Perhaps something from your Young Leaders Award, plenty of reading, mathletics and your weekly spellings (there/their/they’re here/hear quite/quiet see/sea bare/bear one/won sun/son to/too/two be/bee blue/blew night/knight).

    Don't forget the Christmas fair!!!

    Have a lovely weekend.

  • Friday 23rd November (Mr McShane)

This week has gone in the blink of an eye! We have ended with a hooting last lesson of brass, our teacher was very impressed.

We have spent some time this week working on our model World War trenches. We used a range of cutting, gluing and strengthening techniques however they may take us a little time yet! It was great that we had some trainee teachers to help us who were very impressed with the creativity and ingenuity of Year 5. Now we know more of the reasons for the start of World War 1 and have knowledge of the trenches we will put it to good use and write some amazing detailed pieces as if we were there.  We had to crack loads of World War codes to get our knowledge, some were very tricky!! Can anyone decipher this one?  I will give you the key to the code first:

And now for the code itself:

In maths we have been calculating area and perimeter, this link will take you to some relevant games https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Search.aspx?q=area+and+perimeter yes

Next week is assessment week in school.  Nothing will radically change other than some of the lessons will have more formal work than usual so please no worrying etc. It will be done in the All Saints' Way as always.  It is a chance for the children to show off what they have learnt.

  • Friday 16th November (Mr McShane)

We visited the IMAX cinema this week to watch 'A Beautiful Planet' as part of the IntoFilm Festival.  The children were wonderfully behaved and even though the film was 'educational' the special effects more than made up for it!  It was like we were on board the International Space Station.  We have been working hard to review the film.  (We will try and upload some of the finished reviews next week)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJpLjXbGIkQ

I hope many of you enjoyed visiting and seeing our art work displayed in the school hall on Wednesday, we were very proud of the results.

We had a visit from two police officers on Friday to talk to us about bullying, in particular cyber and also stranger danger.  We know we need to be very careful with what information we share with people online and also to go make sure we are with a friend or family member when we go to places such as the park.

We ended our hectic week with a game of Monopoly; this was good for our team work (turn taking, following instructions etc) but also for our maths, particularly money!  Who knew we would be worrying about mortgages at such a young age!!!

Have a safe and happy weekend everyone.

    Next week:

*Forest School starts on Wednesday for Group Two.

*All children need an apron in school if possible - an old shirt will do fine - for our Design Technology work.  We are hoping to recreate some trenches using a variety of cutting, joining and strengthening methods.  Feel free to research from home and bring in any materials you feel will help your model come to life.  (Lollipop sticks are particularly useful for trench floorboards).

*Brass lessons start on Friday - letters have gone home.

*Homework Museum: Optional long term project deadline is Tuesday next week.yes

*Please ensure you learn your spellings (available, average, awkward, bargain, bruise, category, cemetery, committee, communicate, community and bonus non-negotiables of table, apple, bottle).

*Please revise your three times tables and division facts if you struggled with them this week.

  • Friday 9th November (Mr McShane)

    By HARRISON.C AND KIERAN.D :)

This week we have been very busy, from maths to writing newspapers.

We were visited especially by some very special WW2 veterans that are sadly nearly all gone! They spoke to us as we asked lots of questions to them and some of us even got autographs from some of them and they all told us interesting stories about their tough lives. We had to take lot's of notes because the next day we had to write newspapers about their visit. We learnt about lot's of different sentence types like the some;others and the noun,who/which/where.

Next maths, we did the inverse to check lot's of answers hard column addition questions like 3768 +7960.

Soon enough we had another Assembly on Diwali. We learnt things like, Diwali is a celebration for Hindus and other religions and the celebrate it on November.(usually sometimes October)

Today (9.11.18) we did 2 minutes silence and we did some other things like when WW1 ended and started, we did this instead of celebration Assembly .

Thank you for listening to HARRISON.C AND KIERAN.D

Cinema next week on Wednesday so no forest schools

    BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

  • Friday 2nd of November (Mr McShane)

We started the week with a 'WHOOSH' as we launched the rockets we have been building in D & T.  Some went to great heights whilst other launches needed to be aborted! It was great fun and demonstrated the need for secure attaching of the fins and nose cones, a well weighted and balanced rocket with a streamlined design.  We pressurized the bottle by filling with air and thrust is generated when the water is expelled from the rocket.

On Thursday, Ben’s Grandad paid us a visit to talk about his father (Ben’s great grandfather) and the role he played in World War 2. He is the man in the middle of the attached picture.

It was really interesting to hear the stories. He was a doctor in the Polish army (who were fighting on the side of Britain, Canada, USA and France) and was involved in huge battles, including one at Mont Ormel (known as Hill 262) where they defeated the Germans in a significant battle.

Children asked some well-considered questions and this was a great way to start our topic within a topic.  Next week we will continue this theme and are looking forward to a visit from some Stockport Normandy Veterans.

    .........................

    No Forest School next week.

Cinema trip letters have gone out this week, please check book bags and pockets!

Currently airing on BBC 2 is a programme called 100 Days to Victory, telling the extraordinary story of how the Allies turned the tide in the final months of 1918 to win the First World War.  Some may find this of interest  https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bpvyb1

  • Friday 12th October (Mr McShane)

Not our average week due to Bike Ability training where the majority of the class had two days of intensive bike training; learning to keep safe and ride in the correct gear.  Hopefully the children can continue to get some bike time before the early, dark nights draw in.

Our novel (Airman) has gripped us this week as the wicked twists and turns continue! We have explored some ambitious language to help us describe Hugo Bonvilian, the most dishonest, unpalatable, loathsome and obnoxious brute there ever was!

Mrs. Parry made torches with the class and we have won loads of Mathletics and Spellodome certificates so HUGE well done and keep it up!!

We held Pupil Parliament ballots after candidates did their presentations.  I have to say I was impressed with the confidence, the effort and some of the great manifesto ideas that were shared.  Winners do know who they are but we will formally announce in assembly next week! yes

Next week is Church week (so no Forest School).  I am sure we will have a wonderful and thought provoking time.

    Have a super, safe weekend.

Please can reading books and records be in school every day next week and start bringing in your empty 2l plastic bottles for Rocket making.

  • Friday 5th October (Mr McShane)

Hey there, it's Archie and Nicola here! We have learnt about tracked planes (looking at their speed, latitude and longitude) and we have done spellings which was brilliant. We have been reading the Airman book which has been spectacular, we have also been doing rounding in maths. We have been doing google earth this afternoon it was very exellent.  On google earth ...we found the Saltee Islands (the location of our novel!!)  In class we have learning with Miss Pollit about this robot jibo. We made hoop gliders and Mr Mcshane said mine was pretty good because mine went the furthest! (If you did not know it is Nicola talking)

No Forest School next week due to Bikeability! Bring bikes, comfortable own clothing (including waterproofs) and a helmet on TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY!. Wheel bikes onto KS2 playground.

Star writers this week were Archie M and Harrison for comedy genious persuasive writing! yes

Homework: mathletics, spelling and reading ever day!

  • Friday 28th September (Mr McShane)

A very busy week in which Year 5 have been writing some amazing descriptive pieces using their senses and expanded noun phrases, have had a fun packed French morning involving croissants and hot chocolate (Big thank you Mrs. Parry) and using Digimaps in Geography for our 8 compass point work.

https://www.bbc.com/teach/class-clips-video/using-a-compass-and-reading-maps/z77tf4j   This might be of use to look at.

In maths we have worked on problem solving involving rounding or x 10,100,1000 and even looked at greater than, less than, equal to with a new song from Blazer Fresh!!

In Science we have been using force meters to measure mass and weight - we will use this knowledge as we begin to investigate flight (please start collecting 2L empty plastic bottles).

Some of us have had an amazing Forest Schools experience (same teams next week).

Our star writer this week went to Caitlyn, well done for your amazing description that now sits proudly on the Star Writers display.

    Have a lovely weekend everyone.

    Homework:

Spellings have gone home today and I will attach to the blog - learn as many as you can for each week ready to be tested on the Wednesday.

New reading books and records have gone home - the expectation is they come in daily with comments written from children or adults.

Big push on Mathletics this week please!!!  yes

Remember to get your bikes checked and dig those helmets out.

  • Friday 21st September (Mr McShane)

Another week gone and time is flying - just like our novel! Airman is really starting to excite us and has inspired some excellent descriptive writing.  We are fascinated by the Saltee Islands now and can’t wait to find out more!

Zack became our star writer this week, 'A symphony of joyous birdsong echoed around the island, colonies of birds levitated up to the baby-blue sky and soared off to the horizon.'  Well done you yes

It was lovely to meet so many parents at the recent parents evening- for those that could not attend please get in touch and find out all about Year 5 this year.

We have explored Hinduism in Discovery this week and learnt loads about their commitment and devotion, including Puja, their form of worship.

In maths we have been trying to round a range of numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 or even beyond into the hundreds of thousands.

e.g: Can you round 23, 406 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000?  (Answers at the end of this blog!)

Mrs. Parry and Mrs. Pratt taught French this week...
‘Pouvez vous parler plus lentement, s’il vous plait!’

In Science we have started to look at the Earths gravitational force and used force meters in our practical investigation.
    ...................
    Bikeability consent forms:
    Needed by Monday please!

Children know who need their kit next Wednesday.

    Answers: 23, 406 =

    23, 410 nearest 10.

    23, 400 nearest 100

    23,000 nearest 1000

    20,000 nearest 10,000

    Thursday 13th September (Mr McShane)

What a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious start to life in Year 5!  It has been lovely getting to know the children this first week or so and if this momentum can continue we are in for a cracking year.  I am genuinely excited to see what can be achieved.  Myself, Mrs. Parry and Mrs. Adshead have been extremely impressed by the attitude of all the children and their relationships with one another.   Strengthening our team further, I would like to introduce Miss. Pollit to you, our student teacher who has settled really well into All Saints'.  She will be working alongside me for some of the school week (when she is not at University) and also delivering particular lessons herself, please do come and say hello!

It was a real pleasure to take Year 5 on the whole school hike this week.  Although a real challenge, hiking from 10am until 3pm, the children were a credit.  Surrounded by beautiful scenery we had giggles, songs and a rewarding ice-cream...and I didn't hear any moaning! What a great way to get to know each other a little more whilst sucking up the fresh air!

We have started writing our detailed recounts of this strenuous event, have been looking at 6 figure grid references in Geography, have made bold predictions about our first class novel (Airman) checked our place value knowledge in maths and have been arty and crafty whilst setting up our classroom for the year - considering our hopes and also contemplating what 'The All Saints' Way' means to us.

Exciting things are heading our way:

Meet the teacher event: 3:30pm and repeated at 6pm next Monday (17th of September).

Forest Schools starts next week with Mrs. Eva, our resident bush tucker guru! (full kits on Wednesday 19th please for everyone).

The final blog of the year!  A huge well done to everyone on a wonderful year 5!

This week has been all about celebration, celebrating our achievements, successes and ourselves.  There were many certificates given out for behaviour, attendance, homework.  Children have so much to celebrate.  We've really enjoyed watching year six's production and already the children have been talking about what they would like to do themselves, next year.  The children showed their video of the Werneth Dance festival to the whole school during this assembly and it was really well recieved.  There is a letter about the rescheduling of the plaza event (Tuesday 25th September) in the children's bags tonight.

Next term's topic is going to be a whole school topic entitled 'Land, Sea and Sky'.  In year six we will be approaching this through a theme of the world wars'.  We have lots of brilliant things planned - with lots of ideas from the children.  If you would like a project over the holidays: any child who creates a 3D model of a mode of transport from either world war will be rewarded!  These will help to make our new classroom atmospheric!

Please have a good rest over the holidays, the children have worked hard all year and truly deserve it.  However, I can't stress enough the importance of keeping reading, please keep practising little and often, this is the best way to keep the reading stamina children will need in year six.  Children have a laminated card with their mathletics/spellodrome login in their bags tonight, using this regularly will be a great support also.

Thank you so much for all the incredibly thoughtful gifts we have recieved, it is so kind and so greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful summer break and we look forward to see you all again in September.

    Best Wishes

Mrs Cochrane and the year 5 team.

  • Friday 13th July (Mrs L Cochrane)

What a lovely week we have had this week!

The chidren have really stepped up to what will be their new responsibilities, we've had great fun making cards and presents to the new reception children who will be our buddies.  Some of the comments children wrote in their cards were so kind and thougtful.  Most of year five met their buddies today, for those who didn't there will be plenty of time next year to really befriend our new school starters.  We have also been working on gifts and presentations for the year 6 service next week - children please look at the poem we are reading and try to memorise your parts.

We have been working on hydrallics in DT making brides, the children have worked brilliantly in these and the bridges are looking fantastic, they will get to bring these home at the end of term.

This morning the children completed a child's first aid course with Millie's trust, they co-operated brilliantly and learnt such a lot of practical tips.  Great participation class five!

The children have completed and published their horror stories this week, there are some really scary front covers and excellent plots, so well done children.

Homework:  Practise your reading for year six service, Mathletics, spelling and reading.

Hope the sunshine returns, have a lovely weekend

    Mrs Cochrane

  • Friday 6th July (Mrs L Cochrane)

What a beautiful week of weather we have been lucky to have.  Children have been great in the hot weather, it's not easy and they havent complained.  Glad we have a fun swim this afternoon to cool off!

There have been lots of exciting things happening this week.  On Tuesday we watched a very powerful performance about women getting the vote, it was based on women from this area and their history.  It is linked to a current exibition at Marple Library and the incredible tales of these influential women in history, the chidlren were quite engaged and may like to go and explore the exibition if you are at a loose end over the weekend.

Thursday was our trasition to year six morning, we moved next door and had a morning of Robinwood team building activities.  Mrs Pratt told us all what to expect from Robinwood and was able to answer the children's many exciting questions.  We also used the opportunity as an end of year five celebration and enjoyed some pizzas and pop!

We have been rehearsing our imfamous dance routine for the plaza (Performance is next Wednesday eve, please arrive at plaza for 5.15pm so that we can have a quick practise on the stage!)  If you have not returned your slip, please do so as soon as possible.  Children will bring their costumes home that day and will need to come in these ready to perform.  PLease could girls have their hair tied up in a bun, I will have ribbon for their hair and will put it in for them before the performance.

Children will be going to a science challenge at Marple Hall next Tuesday with Mrs Morton, please ensure chidlren are at school for 8.30am.  Lunch arrangements remain the same as normal and children do not need anything additional for the morning.

Please keep going with mathletics; it's so helpful for the children to keep practising, its easy to score 1000points each gane can earn 100 and only takes a few minutes.  Please feel free to earn 1000 points as homework and ask children to record this in their homework book.

Enjoy the fair tonight and the sunshine this weekend.

    See you next week

What a beautiful week of weather we have been lucky to have.  Children have been great in the hot weather, it's not easy and they havent complained.  Glad we have a fun swim this afternoon to cool off!

A huge congratulations on surviving the full week in this scorching weather, the children have done so well.

Well done to Evie B, Matthew, Charlie, Keane, Nathan, Imogen, James, Amy, Harvey who have received their bronze certificates for mathletics.  An extra special well done to Keane and Amy who have earnt two bronze certificates for earning 1000 points each week.  I hope everyone has managed to logon and have an explore? It’s a really exciting and useful learning tool.  If you have any questions about the programme, please feel free to ask and I will try to help!

Four children were invited to a maths challenge event at Cheadle Hulme school on Tuesday: Heather, Amy, Charlie and Keane put up an incredible performance and came joint second place overall. Well done on this amazing achievement and for really representing All Saints in the true All Saints Way.

We had two visitors from the Oldknow Legacy organisation, Natasha and Lisa worked with the children to make clay roundels of images linked to Mellor Mill, the Lime Kilns and the Marple Aqueduct.  These are going to be made into 3D plaques to be displayed at all three sites; they are designed to last from 10-20 years – a legacy from their time in year five.

We have been working a lot on problem solving and reasoning again, we’ve particularly worked on the strategy of using known facts to help us this is a really useful strategy but does take a bit of getting used to, the children have given it a really good go. We have finished reading Room 13 and have made a start on writing our own horror stories, we have worked on settings and characters and linked these to our fabulous Whitby Abbey art work.  In science we looked again at the stages of a human life cycle and looked more specifically at the process of puberty.  We looked at changes that happen to boys and girls and changes that are specific to either boys or girls.  As a bit of stand-alone challenge we also tried to write news reports linked to the Saddleworth moor fire, we’ll try and video these next week as they were shaping up well.

Homework is sometime on the grid, handwriting spelling and reading.  As with last week if you would prefer to give Mathletics a good blast feel free to count this as homework (just make a note that you have done this in your homework book – children should be aiming for 1000points per week). Let’s try to get everyone a certificate by next week

    Enjoy the beautiful weather.

The end of another week is here, what an exciting one it has been.  Firstly, I would like to say how delighted I am to be moving up to year six with this amazing class.  To be able to support them and share their final All Saints year will be a privilege.  Please find new class team information in school bags/homework books.

I’m really excited to share mathletics.com with you.  Children all have a login for this maths website (it should be stuck into reading record books or homework books), it is something we have had in school previously; it is now revamped and better than ever.  There are lots of interactive games to explore; plenty of chances to work on the skills children need in years five and six.  I’ve set the children a target of 1000 points a week – this is very attainable and will engage the children in around ten different games – but please feel free to do more!  There are certificates and prizes available and an opportunity to play against children all over the world; huge recognition to anyone who can get onto the world’s top hundred leader board! Well done to Evie B, Matthew, Charlie, Keane, Nathan, Imogen, James, and Amy who have already earned 1000 points.  If you have any questions about the programme, please feel free to ask and I will try to help!

The Great Science Share at Whitworth Hall at Manchester University was a fantastic event, I felt very lucky to have been involved, there were so many fantastic scientific ideas to experience, Thank you to the eight children who attended:  Sadie, Imogen, Rosie, Mia T, Charlie, Oliver, George and Peter, they were a credit to our school, yourselves and most importantly, themselves.  They were able to confidently explain and engage other pupils the experiment we had taken.  Additionally, they showed such interest in the experiments of other schools.

Like I said it has been a busy week, thanks to Keane, Matthew, Nathan and Ashton for representing All Saints in a dodgeball tournament – they were placed 3rd and participated in the true All Saints Way.

Now to what we have been learning this week…We have been working a lot on mental maths skills this week, we have been talking through calculation strategies and sharing our working out.  We are always trying to find the most efficient way of working out a calculation.  We have also been working on problem solving and reasoning; this is something that children need to be very confident with as they progress to year six.  Children have completed a problem solving test and will be bring that home next week.  We have been writing diary entries linked to our work on Room 13, we have been trying to get writers voice into our writing – sometimes this can be achieved through including accent and dialect into writing – it’s tricky, but the children have really embraced the challenge.  We will do more work on this text next week.  We have linked our architect and designers topic to the world cup and have spent some time learning about the architecture behind the world cup stadiums.  Just for fun we have had a world cup sweepstake – good luck everyone!

Homework is sometime on the grid, handwriting spelling and reading.  If you would prefer to give Mathletics a good blast feel free to count this as homework (just make a note that you have done this in your homework book).  I’ll be looking for top scorers next week.

Have a fabulous and restful weekend in the sunshine, see you next week.

Welcome back to the final half term of year five, how quickly the time has passed.  The children have their final homework grids, spellings, and class newsletter in their bags tonight.  A few children did not return their books before the holidays, so have a plastic wallet with the information in.

This week we have worked hard on revising some grammar, namely relative clauses!  The children are getting more confident with this and their next steps is going to be consciously include it in their writing.  This is an expectation for year five and six.  We have begun our new science topic - Animals and humans and the children had a fabulous first lesson learning about the stages of the human life cycle.  We also completed an experiment about the best substances to make a lava lamp.  This experiment was inspired by Sadie's question last half term - Can you make oil sink?  Eight children have been asked to attend the science share at Manchester University next Tuesday.  This is the experiment we are going to take.  In maths we have been revising addition and subtraction of decimals.  We have also worked on place value.  The children are getting really confident with this.  On Thursday we had a brilliant music assembly run by 'Front Row Music' who provide the school's ukulele and guitar lessons.  Children have been offered letters about starting tutition. We also had our class photographs onThursday - look out for these in the coming weeks.

Today is our last proper swimming session, I'm hoping that our fun swim can be slotted in before the end of the term (Friday 6th July) - apologies for the confusion with swimming it has been difficult to re-organsie after Marple's closure.

The summer fair is scheduled for Friday 6th July, Year 5 have been allocated the 'Angry Bird Catapult Game'.  We need parents to help run the stall, if you are able to help for about half an hour please let me know.  The chidlren have a letter about this in their bags.

    Have a great weekend

  • Saturday 26th May (Mrs L Cochrane)

What a fantastic week to end our half term, the children and I have thoroughly enjoyed active week!  It has been wonderful to be able to try out new sports and experiences.  Year five have embraced all the challenges in the true All Saints way, and have truly demonstrated the 5Rs - which we spent a lot of time talking about last week.

This week the children have done archery, football, cookery (smoothie making), clubbercise, street dance, mile a day run, wake up shake up, made and tasted Maya hot chocolate, Life cycle treasure hunt, participated in Sports Day where they supported each other and encouraged their team members from different year groups and have completed our active week with swimming (there will be 2 more sessions after the holidays – please send in clothes for life saving on the 15th June e.g. shorts and t-shirts).

A massive thank you to our sports ambassadors: Nathan, Matthew, Keane, Harvey, Evi H Sadie, Amy, and Mia W.  You have done an excellent job this week in helping staff this week and been a wonderful example to the younger children.

We have all presented Maya talks for the class, thank you to parents for all your support with this, the children did brilliantly and we found this to be a really beneficial experience and something that we’ll aim to repeat!

Have a lovely, restful holiday, ready to take on the last half term of Year 5.

This morning we had a Growth Mindset assembly, well done to Keane our class’s winner. Mrs Noble reminded us all about the 5Rs and how they underpin everything we do.  In class five we have spoken a lot about these qualities and what they look like for us.  We have had a mini show off week  this week and have tackled a number of assessments, the children have approached this very maturely.  In active week next week we will aspire to demonstrate these incredibly important qualities.

As I have mentioned, next week is active week, there are loads of super opportunities for children to get active and have fun together, children can wear sports clothing all week.  Please ensure they have suitable footwear – trainners.  We will be doing a short run each day to get us motivated!

We managed to make some excellent movie trailers, based on our Mayan Myth’s.  The children created an excellent range of art work and photography to produce these, adding really appropriate and dramatic music and captions.  Well done to Evelyn for being this weeks star writer she wrote a incredible mayan myth!

Our work on Jane Goodall continued this week, children have looked at conservation and fundraising and put together their own advertisements to seek support for this important work.  Some children chose to make posters, others radio broadcasts and some TV adverts.  These looked super and really showed the children’s clear understanding.

Homework: please remember to complete handwriting (if your child has an expert pen license they do not need to do this, but please write this next to the handwriting task).   Homework is something from the grid, spellings, handwriting and reading. Please note:  all children will be doing an oral presentation about the Maya next week your child needs to be confident in their presentation.  If you need further advice on this, please ask. If you would like specific homework on areas you feel your child needs to work on please feel free to ask me.

Looking forward to a brilliant week next week!

Not off to swimming again…unfortunately there was a mix up with the coach this afternoon and we weren’t able to get to the pool, the children handled this disappointment really well; instead we have made Maya jewellery from clay and had a whole class game of catch the flag! Children will need swimwear, towels and swimming hats (girls only) each Friday until further notice.

Instead of growth mindset assembly today, we had a special visitor who taught us all about the religion of Isalm, she spoke to us about Ramadam and the festival of Eid. The children listened so well and asked some really impressive questions.

In English this week have been working on our Maya creation myths, these are sounding super!  The children have produced some excellent pieces.  Hopefully next week we will be able to use some filming techniques in order to make a movie trailer.

Most children have now returned Pobble permission slips: if you haven’t had chance to complete this yet, please could you return these as soon as possible.  So far Matthew, Nathan and Charlie have become published authors.

In science we have been looking at the fascinating work of Jane Goodall, we have learnt about her as a scientist and the incredibly important work she has done for chimpanzees; next week we will follow up with what affect her work has had worldwide.

We have worked on decimals this week in maths and have again revised multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000.  This is a key year five objective and we cover it regularly, I pleased to say we’ve nearly all got the hang of it now!

Next week we will be doing some tests to keep year six company!  These are just for our information and to enable children to show off what they have learnt.  Look out for marked tests in school bags so you can see how your child has got on.  If you would like to talk to me about any of these tests, I am available in the mornings and at the end of the day.

Homework: please remember to complete handwriting (if your child has an expert pen license they do not need to do this, but please write this next to the handwriting task).   Homework is something from the grid, spellings, handwriting and reading. Please note:  all children will be doing an oral presentation about the Maya in the final week, your child needs to be confident in their presentation.  If you need further advice on this, please ask. If you would like specific homework on areas you feel your child needs to work on please feel free to ask me,

I’m not sure the weather promises to be as beautiful as last weekend but I hope you have fun with your families and friends, I’ll see you on Monday.

Off to swimming again!  Well done everyone for remembering kits!  Children will need swimwear, towels and swimming hats (girls only) each Friday until further notice.

Well done to Matthew for this week’s star writer.  Well done to Mia W for being this week’s superstar, we’re so proud of you both! In English this week we started work on making mythical movie trailers – a first for me!  We have read a Mayan Myth of creation.  We are going to write our own version of these stories, and then we’re hoping to learn some filming techniques in order to make a movie trailer, children have been talking about the types of props they may need and may possibly request some items from home (only things that they have already – we will be able to source things in school too).

Most children have now returned Pobble permission slips: if you haven’t had chance to complete this yet, please could you return these as soon as possible.  So far Matthew, Nathan and Charlie have become published authors.

We have been researching Maya jewellery this week in preparation for our clay projects.

In science we have been looking at reproduction of mammals and we have learnt the three different types of mammals: placental, monotreme and marsupial.  Can you child remember the difference?  We have drawn and described life cycles of different mammals.

We have worked on fractions in maths, learning how to multiply proper fractions by whole numbers. Most children have got the hang of this method, it’s not as challenging as it initially sounds and the children have shown real perseverance - particularly when converting improper fraction to mixed numbers!

If you would like specific homework on areas you feel your child needs to work on please feel free to ask me.

Another super week from year five, I look forward to hearing all about your bank holiday adventures!  Have fun with your families and friends and I’ll see you on Tuesday.

Hi we’re on our way to our first swimming session at Grand Central Stockport!  Well done to all those who have remembered their kits.  Children will need swimwear, towels and swimming hats (girls only) each Friday until further notice.  The chidlren really represented our school well and showed real dedication to their swimming session!

In English this week we have been writing narrative poems in the style of Michael Rosen. We have created our own entitled ‘Bean to Bar’.  After learning all about how chocolate is made.  The class have been working hard to create poems that have style and play with words.  Some super pieces.  Well done to Nathan for this week’s star writer.

Apologies for delay in the Pobble letter, children who still require permission have a letter in their bags tonight.  Please send back permission as soon as you are able.  Hopefully we will be able to publish our children’s work next week.

We have been askng questions about the Maya, and trying to find the answers using secondary sources.  I’m so proud of the children’s topic books, they are looking brilliant already.

In science we have been looking at reproduction of plants and have attempted to create our own new plants, ask your children about this process and see what they can recall.  Next week we will be looking at reproduction of mammals.

We have worked on percentages in maths and have linked these to decimals and fractions, the children are generally starting to get the hang of this and some and very confident.  It can be a difficult concept to master, if anyone would like any extra practise please feel free to ask me.

Lots of children have taken challenge sheets as homework today, please remember to complete handwriting (if your child has an expert pen license they do not need to do this, but please write this next to the handwriting task).   Homework is something from the grid, spellings, handwriting and reading.

Children are all working so hard and should be very proud of their efforts, as we embark on the summer term we can really see how the children are developing and how readily they will be able to embrace year six. Have a lovely weekend, make sure you all have a good rest and plenty of time for fun with your friends and families.

Welcome back to the summer term!  I can't believe how quickly time is flying.  The class have had such a positive start to the term.  Well done class five.

We have started our new topic - The Maya.  We have been writing non-chronological reports based on our own research.  The children have used 'pobble' our new online writing tool to analysise the writing of other year five children accross the world.  We are going to publish some of the class's best reports onto pobble for a worldwide audience.  If you have not recieved an email regarding pobble, please check your child's bag for a letter and permission slip.  We are really lucky to be part of the trial of this exceptional resource.

In maths we have been working on area and perimeter, we have made a part using protractors today but children have found these quite tricky, we will practise again but if you get chance try to have a practise at home (I have plenty spare protractors if you need to borrow one).

Homework grids, newsletters, spelling lists are in the children's bags today.  Any children who have misplaced books have had them replaced - please try to keep these safe and return them with completed homework each Wednesday.  Please note that there is a compulsary piece of homweork on the grid that all children need to complete. I have spoken to the chidlren in depth today about this, but do feel free to ask me any questions.

We have two more dance performances coming up and I am still missing a couple of costumes.  Please return these on Monday.  I need to ensure these costumes are ready for the next performance, please could you send in a coat hanger -Image result for coat hangerslike this one so we can hang the costumes in the classroom.

Swimming is due to start again next week.  We will be swimming at Grand Central due to the current closure of Marple.  Please remember goggles are not permitted and girls need swimming hats.

Thank you to all those who have applied to be librarians in our fabulous new library, I'm sure they will keep it look pristine!

Have a wonderful weekend - I hope the good weather lasts!

    See you next week

CONGRATULATIONS YEAR 5, a fabulous performance at Werneth Dance festival last  night, I think you'll agree the class performed their dramatic dance spectacularly!  I was so proud of them all, for the wonderful commitmemt they have shown to this project.  Please could you wash and return costumes as soon as possible so that we can keep them safe for the plaza performance in the summer!

This week we have completed our recounts about our fabulous school trip.  We are looking forward to sharing more of our trip with you at the class assembly on Wednesday 28th March (9am start, parents welcome). We have put a lot of work into our topic this week: sketching  and reseaching landmarks, creating story boards of significant people in the village, creating bar graphs using the death register document, writing up tradition plague remedies and designing stainned glass windows.

Next week is a busy end of term week, we have an Easter experience at All Saints Church on Tuesday, additionally we have our KS2 Easter service (again at All Saints Church) which parents are invited to.  We have our spelling bee and ice cream party on Thursday afternoon, so use this weekend to make sure you have an extra practise so you know as many as possible!

We have been working on measures in maths this week and using our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000 to convert between measures.  Children have struggled with these calculations within problems so I have given each child a measures problem sheet for homework - this would can be completed as a task from the grid but is not compularsy.

Huge well done to Evelyn, Charlie and James for earning their expert pen license, I know Mrs Noble is desperate to give out some more so keep practising children - all that handwriting practise will really pay off!

Homework:Measures sheet OR something from the grid, handwriting, spellings, and lots of reading!

    Happy weekend everyone

  • Friday 16th March (Mrs L Cochrane)

The end of another action packed week at All Saints.

This week has been an exciting one, with lots of extra curricular experiences for the class.  Our trip on Tuesday was a roaring success and the children were so well behaved really showing off our school!  The children listened so well to the talk in the church and asked so very insightful questions.  There wasnt too much complaining about the extreamly wet and muddy hike to the boundary stone, and I think I'm right in saying, that the children were quite amazed by seeing the actual 'artefacts' that we had been learning about.  We also had a visit from Stockport road saftey team in which we learnt about how to stay safe in a car, we learnt about importance of things like seat belts and headrests and additionally we made our own model cars and investigated how they would stand up to a road accidient.  This was a great morning for us all, in which we all learnt so much.

Our Eyam science lesson was great fun and the chidlren were able to separate a range of mixed materials successfully.  We have completed a range of topic based tasks this week and are fully immersed in Eyam in the seventeenth century.  Again we have had a huge push on writing and year five have written some excellent recounts about our trip - lots of year five writing skills have been displayed so well done again children.  Thank you to those parents who attended the world book day afternoon your chidlren were thrilled to have you in class, its always lovely to be able to share some of our work with you.

Reminder that next week is the dance performance at Werneth High School (which all children are involved in) please return any outstanding forms as soon as possible as next week is another busy one.  We really hope you are able to attend and watch the children's performance I personally think its rather impressive!

Wednesday 28th March will be our year five class assembly, (9am start)

Homework:  Reading, spelling, handwriting and something from the grid.

    Have a relaxing weekend

    Mrs Cochrane

  • Friday 9th March (Mrs L Cochrane)

Apologies for the late blog, our new swimming session has changed my routine!  Firstly, I was so proud of the children at swimming today, they conducted themselves with such maturity, getting to and from the baths, changing quickly and sensibly and listening really well during their first assessment lesson.

Our work this week has been focussed on our new class text the Kiss of Death, the chidlren have written some beautiful love messages between the characters Emmott and Rowland, so sensitive and heart felt - I was almost welling up!  The children's writing skills are really beginning to develop too, try to practise some parenthesis children, this will really help.

We have looked at some of the geographical features of Eyam and we will investigate further on our trip on Tuesday.  Science has seen a variety of dissolving experiments including some (accidental) fizzy water erruptions and ribena explosions - but we can safely say we know what variables effect dissolving!  Next week I have a special Eyam based science problem for the children to solve, I'm quite looking forward to it myself!

PE update, due to swimming the children's outdoor PE session has been moved to Tuesday afternoon, additionally, in preparation for our dance competition (Thursday 22nd March - please return slips asap) we will be practising our 'Crime and Punishment dance on Thursday's - PE kits will be needed here too.

The children have recieved a second letter regarding the Eyam trip today, please note non school uniform and late return time.

Times tables rock stars is up and running - we are still experiencing a couple of teething problems (please let us know if there are any issues), I can not stress highly enough the importance of good times tables knowledge, please use this wonderful resource as regularly as possible!  The children have their logins in their reading record books.  The quickest way to search for our school (the top box asked for organisation name) is to type Cheshire and then select All Saints.

Homework: reading, spellings, handwriting and something from the grid.

Have a super weekend and I look forward to our adventures next week!

  • Friday 2nd March (Mrs L Cochrane)

Well, what an eventful week it has been!  I hope you are all managing to enjoy the snow a bit - although, that said, it is rather treacherous and unpleasant.  Keep warm and enjoy some time together.

I am uploading this half terms homework grid, spellings and newsletter.  If you have a Nessy login you will need to following spelling list B.  Homework will be due in next Wednesday as normal.  CHidlren all have time tables rockstars logins - these should be in the front of their reading records.

If you wish to complete anything extra today, or over the weekend, in light of the two snow days, please do some revision on parenthesis and write approximatley half a page diary entry about what you have done during the snow days - include sentences with parenthesis.  You could do some research into the plague story at Eyam and write some chronologically ordered notes on the events which occured from 1665-1666 and consider what difference did the weather make during this time?

Hopefully we will be back to normal next week.  In the meantime, here are some dates for your diary:

Friday 9th March 2018 - Year 5 are starting their swimming sessions at Marple pool, we need an extra adult to walk with us, Is anyone able to help at all?

Tuesday 13th March - Year 5 and 6 trip to Eyam village - letter to follow (but until then here is some extra information: warm weather suitable clothing will be needed including waterproofs and sturdy waterproof shoes; children will need packed lunches and drinks for the day in a small rucksack; we will be late back to school approx 4.30pm).

Thursday 22nd March - Year 5 dance performance at Werneth Dance festival, please could you arrange to collect your child from Werneth school at 5.45.  We will take the children from school on a coach with costumes etc.  I will fine out if it is possible for you to come and watch and send more details next week.

Wrap up warm and enjoy the long weekend

I am writing to you half way through the school year, I can’t believe how quickly time is passing.  The children are well underway with the year 5 curriculum and are starting to really make good progress.  This week children have been taking various assessments and have worked especially hard.  They have brought the majority of these home to share with you, please feel free to look at these with your child over the holidays if you wish.  I am happy to answer any questions you may have.  They certainly deserve a good rest this holiday!

This week, whilst being assessment led, has also included many other exciting events for the children.  Many thanks to those parents who attended the African drumming performance on Wednesday following the class’ workshop, this was great fun and our drumming teacher was very impressed with the children’s musical knowledge and talents.  The e-safety meeting – held on Monday – was very informative, if you were not able to attend you are able to access materials via the school website.  To those of you who attended we hope you found the evening helpful. Thank you to Sadie and Maia for representing year 5 at Marple Hall’s tri-golf event, I’m glad you enjoyed it.

On Thursday Mrs O’Shea – a drama teacher from Marple Hall came into class to deliver a drama workshop which was really interesting, we worked using a poem enjoyed by Nelson Mandela, called ‘Invictus’.  Your child may want to look this up – many of the class were quite intrigued by this.

Children have access to a new online maths programme ‘Times Tables Rock Stars’ this works in the same way as Sumdog children have their logins to try out over the holidays if you wish.  We will be changing from Sumdog to Mathletics soon in case anyone has issues logging into Sumdog (we have not renewed our subscription).

Our next topic is ‘What would you do?  Eyam: A local area study’ in case anyone wants to have a look into this fascinating story.  Have a wonderful holiday and a well-earned rest, you all deserve it! No homework keep reading if you wish to do some homework, attempt the suggestions in this blog and/or practise your year 5/6 spellings (lists are in reading record books).

I can't believe we've almost finished another half term; where are the weeks going?  This week has been such an exciting week with so many extra opportunities for the children.

Thank you to Matthew, Keane, Harvey, Harrison, Nathan, Oliver, Peter and George who represented All Saints at the boys sports event at the Armitage centre on Thursday, we know how much you enjoyed it.  Mr McShane and myself ran an e-saftey assembly on Thursday morning and the children really engaged well with this, they demonstrated such good understanding of the huge advantages of the internet but also understood the risks associated with it.  Please talk to your child about this assembly and try to keep lines of communication open regarding this subject.  Thank you to those parents who attended the Nessy parental information evening.  Thank you to Mia D and Connie for volunteering to help with the community litter picking on Thursday.  Today we have had a water saftey assembly and also performed our brass piece for the school. Phew!

We have worked on multiples and factors in maths and also long multiplication including decimals, the children have handled this well, it's important that chlidren can use and understand this mathemetical vocabularly see if they can use it confidently with you at home.  In English we have finished our stories from other cultures and also attempted writing some South African haikus  (a form a poetry from Japan).  In science we have worked on investigating the electrical resistance of different materials to find the most suitable material with which to make football floodlights - children were interested in the results.  In class 5 we are working very hard on working scientificially - predicting, recording results, reaching and explaining conclusions.  Children can you recall why the bulbs were brighter in some circuits than others?

The highlight of my week has been working with Mrs Hogg, a sports teacher from Marple Hall, on our class dance performance again. The teachers keep teasing me as I've said how proud I am of the children's work so many times.  We have been working on the dance on and off since October, there are so many talented perfomers in the class that we have been ask to perform the piece on THREE occasions (date to follow).  The first performance is at Werneth Dance Festival.  Additionally we have been asked to perform at Marple Hall dance festival and even The Plaza in Stockport.  School will be purchasing costumes for all the children to make us look as professional as possible!  Watch this space for more information.  A huge thank you and well done to all the children for their enthuiasm towards this project - it's not my area of expertise and I will say it again, they have made me so proud!

    Upcoming dates for year 5:

Tonight:  Valentine's Disco - Marple Cricket Club 6.30-8pm

Wednesday 14th February - African Drumming workshop (No charge)

Tuesday 13th March - Year 5 and 6 school trip to Eyam

Thursday 22nd March - Werneth School Dance festival.

Please remember homework needs to be completed for Wednesdays: something from the grid, handwriting and spellings, and try to keep reading, it's very important to be in good habits for year 6 and for when your child moves to secondary school.

Hopefully see some of you at the disco tonight to help us raise more money for the new library!

    Have a super weekend

It's that time of the week again and the end of another busy week.

It has been lovely to meet so many of you at parents evening this and share your child's successes.  Thank you for your feedback and for the lovely notes that you left for your child/ren to discover - they were thrilled to read them!

This week children have been writing a lot!  We have started and nearly completed our own stories from another culture based on our class novel Journey to Jo'burg (which, incidently, we have finished reading too, the children begged me to read the final chapters in one go!)  We have completed some lovely follow up discovery work based on the traditional sikh story 'Guru Nank and the milk and the jasmine flower'.  In science we have begun a new investigation into the best material for insulating a lunchbox, we will be drawing our conclusions soon!  Watch this space!

In maths we have been challenging ourselves with decimals, lots of investigations and challenges.  We have been working as architects to enlarge the school building by a variety of amounts and also worked on increasing measurements by a given percentage!

Much better homework this week, thank you so much for all your support, if your child has not had chance to complete their homework there is the option to attend homework club on Wednesday lunchtimes (please remind them to go and they sometimes can forget!)  I will remind them also.  Handwriting is optional for those with an expert pen license, however, I would always recommend completing it as it helps to improve speed and fluency.  CHildren regularly bring homw mental maths tests in their bags, please keep an eye out for these so you can see how your child is getting on.  Sumdog club runs on a Wednesday morning from 8.15 for anyone who fanices doing some extra practise!  Ask me for a letter.

I am running a parents information evening for parents of children with a Nessy login on Thursday evening, after school, at 3.30pm, let me know if you wish to attend.

I think we're ready for some sunshine soon, get well soon to those of you who have been off, hopefully see you back fighting fit next week, have a restful weekend.  Well done year five for showing such perseverence with your work again!

    Happy Friday to you all!

We have had a lovely week in class five with so many wonderful achievements to celebrate.

Year five have begun a new class novel this week - Journey to Jo'burg by Beverley Naidoo, all of our English has been based on this, we have looked at what life would have been like for black children in South Africa at this time.  We have tried to complete pieces of writing in which we wrote in role, we have looked at the positives and negatives of living in Johannesburg during apartheid.  In maths we have been working on subtraction.  As the children are very confident with written methods, we have worked on reasoning tasks and mental calculations using decimals, letting your child use money is a really good way to reinforce practical decimals.

In our science topic - properties of materials we have completed a full investigation into the properties of a variety of materials, the children have designed their own experiments really focusing on making the tests fair.  They have written predictions and conclusions, drawn results tables and diagrams, I was really impressed with the quality of the work, it was wonderful to see how excited the children were to find out the results, well done class five.  We have had a fun morning this morning making clay pinch pots linked to the Sikh story of the 'Milk and the Jasmine flower',  we talked about what else we could make room for in our busy world, can you child recall their suggestion?

We are really having a whole school and year group push on presentation - (me included!) and we're really trying to ensure that we always present work to the highest standard we are able, please enourage your child to continue this into their homework tasks.  As I mentioned last week please do keep completing handwriting homework.  There were a number of children without homework this week, homework books have been sent home before the zoo trip, homework grids, handwriting, spellings are all included in these.

On Wednesday 14th February year five and six will be having an African drumming workshop to enhance our music curriculum.  This is being paid for by school, there is no cost to you.  You are invited to attend a short presentation at 3 o'clock on that day to watch what the children have learnt, I hope you are able to make it.

Lots of the class are feeling a bit under the weather with colds and coughs, please take time this weekend to rest an recover, it can be a very exhuasting time of year!

    Have a great weekend

A huge thank you to all children for your fabulous behaviour at the zoo on Friday of last week. This was a truely fantastic trip for us all,  it was worth all the effort for such a wonderful day.  The children were really engaged in so many of the animals and really learnt a lot, thanks to Mr Gerrard for his excellent guided tour!  I think we pretty much covered the whole zoo!

We have had a lot of visitors in assemblies this week - Stockport County on Monday, an assembly on compassion and today's Growth Mindset - well done to Evie B who was nominated as our classes winner.

We have worked so hard on our biographies of Nelson Mandela this week, the children should be so proud of their work, they have been really engaged in this topic and have been very keen in their research.  The volume of writing expected in year five from the children is ever increasing and a side of A4+ is regularly required; some children are struggling a little with the pace of handwriting, please do keep up handwriting practise, here is a link to some hand strengthening activities that may also be useful.https://theinspiredtreehouse.com/hand-strength-35-fun-activities-for-kids/

In Maths we have begun work on decimals; some children have taken to this easily and others are finding it more challenging, encouraging children to work with money is a really good way to support this:  (Working on £1 being equal to 1 and 10p being 0.1 - therefore 1.1 =£1.10).  We have talked about tenths and hundreths and how to compare one and two decimal place numbers e.g. 0.7 and 0.78 (again we have compared this to money).  Please don't worry if your child is struggling to start with this is a topic that we revist often.  Next week is subtraction - something they are all super at!

There has been a slight change to the curriculum coverage in science we were hoping to look at animals and their habitats but a lot of the tasks lend themselves to the warmer weather, instead in science we will be learning about 'Materials and their Properties'.

We have a fabulous new selection of library books in the classroom that all chidlren are welcome to read - year five are turning into real bookworms, keep going children it is so important and so helpful!  Reading in bed before going to sleep is a great way for children to relax and unwind and should be encouraged as much as possible.  The class are so consciencious and always give their best, the children know how proud I am of their work.  They really must give themselves a pat on the back and mustn't put themselves under pressure.

Another super week year five - well done.

Homework:  Something from the grid, handwriting, spelling and reading.

Most importantly have a good rest, some fun and family time.  See you all on Monday.

An early blog this week!  What a week it's been!

Firstly, thank you so much to those families who attended the All Saints Book Awards on Tuesday evening, it was spectatular evening that I think we all agreed was thoroughly entertaining, Congratulations to our five winners:  Charlie, Millie, Harrison, Rosie, and Mia W.  We also enjoyed our poetry workshop with Craig Bradley on Tuesday.

We have really embraced our new topic and have begun our research for our Nelson Mandela biography.  Our Maths has been place value including decimals and we have also revised greater than, less than (and learnt the new sign greater than and equal to, and less than and equal to).  Additionally, we have covered negative numbers and problem solving linked to these topics.  We used four quadrant grids to plot the coordinates of the South African flag, again using negative numbers.

Don't forget the early start tomorrow for Chester Zoo, please arrive from 8am, letters have been sent home with details today.  Many thanks to all parents and children for your support today.

Homework books have been sent home today with new grids, spellings and the half termly newsletter.

Homework:  Something from the grid, spellings.  NO HANDWRITING THIS WEEK.

    Have a lovely weekend

A very warm welcome back to school for our Spring Term, and a happy new year from us all.  Firstly, many thanks for the many gifts we all recieved from you at the end of term, we have been touched by your generosity.

This week has been a wow week based on the 'All Saints Book Awards', the whole school have been reading the following books:  Nibbles the Book Monster, Danny McGee Drinks the Sea, Super Stan, The Koala who Can and A Dog Called Bear.  These books are available on the wesite under the useful informaton icon if you wish to read them at home. All of our work during the last three days has been based on these super texts.  In year five we have written book reviews and watched clips of these.  The children have designed their own 'Superhero Sibling' based on Super Stan, we have worked together on making this characters look as lifelike as possible and paid particular attention to show movement in their heroes.  We praticised oil pastel techniques to colour these, as this medium provides such vibrant results.  The final activity we did was to make our own comic strip of this story telling the tale of our adventures with our Superhero Sibling.  I especially liked 'Ultra Boy' and 'Flame Boy'.

On Tuesday evening All Saints have their own book Awards at New Mills theatre, this is similar to an 'oscars type' ceremony, there are awards to be given out to children in each class these are as follows: most enthusiastic reader, best book review, best art work, best reading record, most improved reader.  It would be great to see as many of you there as possible.  The evening will be compared by a hilarious poet - plenty of fun for all the family - dress to impress!

Our topic this half term is 'Mandela - A Rainbow Nation'. You will recieve the class newletter about what I am planning to cover next week, there is a wonderful biography abridged by Chris Van Wyk called 'Nelson Mandela Long Walk to Freedom' if you are able to get hold of a copy to read with your child this would be very helpful.  Lots of our work this term will be based around this.  I have never taught this topic before but have found it fasinating to research, I am really looking forward to sharing this topic with the class.

Next Friday is a whole school trip to Chester Zoo which promises to be fabulous, look out for communication next week for final details on arrival times, packed lunches, clothing etc.  Children have brought home parents evening slips tonight, please return these as soon as possible with your prefered times indicated, if you have more than one child in school please send back one slip with both/all your children's names, stating the time slot you would like for your children, and we will do our best to accomadate this.

Homework and spellings will be out next week, in the meantime, keep reading and if you have some spare time maybe start finding out about Nelson Mandela.

Have a lovely weekend, and again welcome back, your children have been a credit to you this week, they have really settled back into our routines quickly and are working so hard already!

  • Friday 15th December (Mrs L Cochrane)

I can't believe we've nearly finished our first term together in year five already!  The children amaze me everyday with their fantastic attitude and commitment to their learning - I have thoroughly enjoyed my first term at All Saints!  This week has been great fun, in class we have been completing a design technology project and have worked on reseaching, designing, making and evaluating our own Roman pasta salads - I believe some of these were quite tasty!

We have also worked hard on preparing our presentation of 'T'was the night before Christmas' for our concert on Tuesday - don't forget your festive headware for this children: hats, tinsel, headbands, antlers...whatever you have!

Again well done to our wonderful singers who went into the community to spread christmas cheer, you represented the school wonderfully.

Monday is our christmas party dont forget to bring in your food donations and your party clothes in a carrier bag to change into.  No homework or spellings this week but try to keep reading!

  • Friday 8th December (Mrs L Cochrane)

Year 5 have really been getting into the festive spirit this week!  Well done and thank you to all the fabulous singers who have been representing our school this week and spreading such christmas cheer!  We have also embarked on our Roman Christmas card project - thanks to Mr Bailey who has been in to help us with these.

Our English work has been topic based - writing explanation texts for all things Roman!  These pieces of work have been really well written and presented, well done children.  Children have been solving various word problems in maths using all of the calculation functions, All Saints have been entered into a Sumdog competition - Good Luck class 5, try to login and play as often as possible - what can we achieve together?  Also - any child who has a 'Nessy' login please do try to play as regularly as possible - little and often will really help improve spellings!

On the subject of spellings we had the All Saints Spelling Bee on Thursday afternoon also side our ice cream party (in which children receive different flavours of ice cream, fruits, sauces etc for various spellings that they have learnt during the term) A HUGE congratulations to Sadie who was the year 5 winner!  We are so proud of you!

I really enjoyed the christmas drop in session this afternoon, it was lovely to catch up with some of you during this informal festival occasion.  I hope you found it enjoyable and helpful.

Homework:  Spellings, handwriting, reading and something off the grid.

Have a relaxing weekend, prepare for a week of fun and festivities - see you at the Christmas lunch on Thursday!

  • Friday 1st December (Mrs L Cochrane)

Firstly, well done on spellings everyone, much better scores this week so the practise has paid off, next week we will be having our termly ice cream party - lots of children have realised most, if not all of their targets.  I'm looking forward to joining the children in this celebration and I'm hoping year 5 will be championing the spelling bee!  Look out for a lucky mascot on the day children.

We have carried on our Roman topic with gusto, this week we have been looking at the features of an explanation text in the book 'Until I met Dudley'.  Next week we will be thoroughly researching how Roman's kept their houses warm and creating our own explanation texts in the style of the book.  Children really enjoyed the team quiz on this on Thursday, very close scores but with 'Harvey and the specs' just taking the prize!

In maths we have been looking at improper frations- some children finding this very easy and some finding it challenging - we do repeat topics throughout the year so if your child isnt entirely confident yet, don't worry.  There are lots of reseources available online and I have a selection that I can share too - just let me know if you neecd any.

The highlight of my week was yesterday's science lesson in which we investiagted the difference between heliocentric and geocentric solar systems models.  The children took on the roles of different scientists throughout history and presented their findings to the class.  We have recorded this as a movie!

Christmas is upon us now and things are getting festive - do feel free to pop in next Friday afternoon for a mince pie and cup of tea (1.30-3pm) I will be available for informal chat to answer any questions you may have before parents evenings in January.

Homework:  Spellings, Handwriting (please make sure this are completed) something from the grid and reading.

    Enjoy the weekend.

  • Friday 24th November (Mrs L Cochrane)

Another week into our school year and more and more wonderful achievements happening everyday!  SO much has happened this week, our trip seems like a distant memory - I hope you enjoy looking at the snaps from the day which we have uploaded for you!  It was a wonderful trip and the children really performed their role's well in the ampitheatre!  We followed up this learning by reseaching the different equipment used by Roman Soldiers - we tried to learn the latin terms for these too.  Along the Roman theme, we have even begun preparing some Roman inspired christmas cards-look forward to a masterpiece!

Our english work this week has been completing, redrafting and publishing our Pompeii adventure stories - most children have managed to make and illusrate their own books, children have worked so hard on this many opted to stay in over one of their breaktimes to get this completed!  We will look forward to sharing the finished versions with others in school!  I, for one, have really enjoyed maths this week - we have been gathering a selection of data ranging from pulse rates per minute to temperatures around school - we have worked on how to record these on line graphs and bar charts - we have learnt the terms mode and range!  Year 5 have a really good grasp of this and have produced some very efficent looking graphs.  Can your child find the 'range' of a selction of data (information) maybe a shopping receipt?

Homework:  Something off the grid, handwriting, spellings and reading.

Just a reminder about spellings - the year 5 and 6 spelling list is incredibly challenging and contains words not often used by 9-11 year olds, this makes it even more difficult, as the words don't become embedded.   Quite a few children were disappointed with their scores on Wednesday; however I entirely appreciate that family life if very busy and we don't want to spend all our spare time learning spellings, there is a great document on the website under resources that has lots of fun ways that really can help, just try to make any practise you do really count! Your support with this is much appreciated!

Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions you may have, year five is a new curriculum for the children and it can be hard to adjust to initially!  Have a lovely weekend and I will hopefully see many of you at the fair for a game of splat the rat and an early mince pie!  If anyone is willing to spare half an hour supervising a game, please find me on the day, extra voluteers are always helpful!

  • Friday 17th November (Miss Daley)

This week we have been doing fun activities about anti-bullying as it is national anti-bullying week .

In maths we have been translating shapes on a graph we were bit unsure about it at first but now we get it .

Thank you year 5 for a great week, we are really making progress through the curriciulum and have got so many systems up and running now.

We have used the film Pompeii as a stimulus for our writing and are planning some super adventure stories, the children have written some great short pieces using similies, metaphores and our senses.  We have used the descriptosaurus to add some fantastic vocabularly and phases.  These reference books have really helped to inspire our writing.

Maths this week has been division revision and also plenty of mental maths practice.  Get ready for next weeks shape work - we'll be looking at triangles especially (equilateral, isosceles, scalene and right angled).  Expect lots of new vocabuluarly - for extra merits on monday and if anyone fancies a mini challenge what do these words mean - bisect, intersect, perpendicular, acute, obtuse and reflex angle?

We managed a full run through of our crime and punishment dance with Mrs Hogg on Thursday, the children have created some inspired individual, group an duet pieces for this performance - we are hoping to perform it later in the school year so watch this space!  In Science the children participated in 'planet speed dating', discussing the similiarities and differences between the planets in our solar system, they also created some super rhymes to help remember what order the planets are in.  Can you child recall their's to teach you?

Homework books are in bags with new grids, spellings and handwriting, children need to complete all threee things (except handwriting if they have an expert pen license) Extra merits for all handwriting this week though!  We have spoken in class about the high standard that is expected for homework, there are plenty of sheets available in the challenge tray that are all linked to our work this half term.

Help needed:  We need some help with two games at the school fair on 25th November 11-1pm if you could spare half an hour please let me know your help would be much appreciated!

Have a great weekend, if anyone needs any extra explantion of the homework etc please do feel free to ask.

    Welcome Back Class 5!

We hope everyone has had a wonderful rest and is ready for lots of exciting things that are happening this half term.

During Maths this week we have been focusing on division we were learning all about the process of long division we now find it so much easier.  Class 5 have recently found out about their new topic 'The Rotten Romans' we are looking forward to the trip to Chester this half term.

We have continued our class novel 'Far from home' which is the sequel to the 'Street Child' both novels link to last terms topic 'Crime and Punishment'. To help us improve our mental maths further we have been playing a game called around the world which tests our muliplication skills and helps to improve our recalling skills. The Poppy appeal has been agreat success and we appreciate all of the kind donations which goes towards a great cause. Thank you

On Wednesday night we had a football match we did really well but got beat on penaltys. It was 2-2 at the end of the game and 3-1 on penalties. Well done All Saints'.

What a week to finish the half term, and what a half term it has been!

The children have been true superstars during our 2017 church week, they have participated in many interesting tasks ranging from learning about national flowers, treasure hunts, learning about the migration of various animals and of course plenty of singing and action!  They have worked in the All Saints Way throughout being polite and respectful towards the many volunteers who make Church week possible!  The children were a credit to you, and to our school during our SIAMs inspection this week, really showing our visitors how incredible our school and children are!  A huge well done.

Also this week the children have worked hard on completing some end of half term assessments, alongside writing some beautiful highwayman poems of their own!  Our next topic is Rotten Romans and I'm really looking forward to our Chester Trip, if you havent already, please logon to ParentPay and make your payment, I will then be able to confirm the days arrangements.

Children, enjoy the holidays, have a well earned rest, no homework but do try to keep reading!  Rewards for anyone who gets their reading record signed four times or more!

We have enjoyed our role as eldest in the school this week, with year six out at Robinwood.

The children had a surprise visitor of our own Highwayman, who was filled with tales of expoloit and robberies!  Or as he would have us believe misunderstandings!  The children have begun to study this poem and have created some excellent narrative poem openings!  Maths has been multiplication, both mental and written strategies -  keep practising timestables, as quick recall of these is so beneficial to the children.

The class got rather competetive over the results of the class boat race, well done to Mia T, Mia W, Sadie and Evi HH for their fabulously designed and streamlined vessels!  The class were all able to describe the features of the streamlined shape and how their boats could be altered to improve their performance!  Excellent science children.

Hope to see many of you at the disco later, enjoy the weekend children have fun and relax.  Next week is church week which I can't wait to experience with you all!

Well done Rosie for Growth Mindset winner - always showing the 5Rs and being a fantastic member of our class!

    Homework

Spellings (please work on these they are challenging!) reading, handwriting and something from the grid!

  • Friday 6th October (Mrs L Cochrane)

This week we have finished our class novel Street Child and the children are begging for the sequel - which I have promised to start next week!  This novel has produced some excellent work from all the children: from fabulously shaded portraits to gripping newpaper reports!  I am thrilled with the work produced.  Our maths this week has been subtraction - with a huge emphasis on mental strategies!  These seem to have worked as all children have either equalled or beaten their score from their last mental maths test!  Brilliant news year five!  Keep going.

I loved to see the children's enthusiasm in Science this week as they set about constructing their own boats - the children had to use their knowledge of air and water resistance to create the quickest boat possible - there were some excellent designs - unfortunately some are so majestic I'm a little stuck as to how we are going to race them as I doubt they will fit in the water tray!  Any ideas are welcome!

Class 5 were wonderful ambassadors for All Saints' on Monday at the Marple Hall netball morning; working well as a team and persevering with the new skills being taught!  Well done Harley - you really stood out as a great sportsman!

We are receiving some wonderful homework from the class so please keep this up; in year five children still need some support with tasks but also need to begin to work on completing challenges independently to a high standard - please do encourage your child to produce their best work as this has real benefits to the children's learning and self esteem!

Enjoy the weekend children - have fun and relax and I look forward to starting The Highway Man work with you next week...you may be in for a surprise!  Well done Harvey this week's class superstar!

Don't forget next Friday's (13th October) school disco all monies raised towards the new library!  Tickets are available from the office at £3!

Homework:  Handwriting, spelling, reading something from the grid!

What a busy week we have had in year 5!  The children have all worked exceptionally hard and earned themselves some free time this afternoon, even during this time, the children worked in the All Saints Way, always being mindful of their classmates, working together and making it a lovely experience for all.

This week children have been working on addition and subtraction strategies (both written amd mental), we have also worked on a selection of the reasoning type problems that I shared at Wednesday's meeting which they seemed to have enjoyed.  In English we have continued with our class novel and worked on writing similes and metaphors!  Can your child recall the difference?  Excitingly, we had a top secret deliver from 'Jamie Bond' himself - the children had to help him decide the best surface on which to chase the badies!  A fabulous friction investigation!  Well done year 5!

We'll meet you at Marple Hall on Monday morning at approximately 9.15, unless you have indicated that your child will be dropped at school/breakfast club in which case we will walk them to Marple Hall.  The netball morning sounds great fun - dont forget to come in your PE kit and trainers with your uniform to change into on return to school!  PLEASE SEND COATS!

Next week in science we're hoping to make boats to investigate water resistance so please send any boxes, tubs, tubes etc that you may have spare (junk modelling).

Homework is spelling (ible - the children decided on the rhyme I buy little elephants to help them to remember the pattern), handwriting, and something off the grid!

Have a restful weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week.

  • Friday 22nd September (Mrs L Cochrane)

This week in English, the children have been working really hard on writing in role.  We have really got into our class text - Street Child and the class have produced some excellent pieces.  They managed to ask some excellent questions in our drama session too.  Maths has been multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 - ask your child if they can remember the rule and also what NOT to do!

Year 5 really impressed me in their dance lesson with Mrs Hogg on Thursday in which they were creating a sequence of freeze frames linked to Crime and Punishment - I was amazed at how many of the strange Roman punishments they could recall.  Can your child remember what the crime was that resulted in the crimal being sewn into a sack with a rooster, monkey, snake and dog?  It was an enlightening lesson!

I loved our science lesson this week when we investigated the effects of size, shape and weight in relation to air resistance!  Charlie had some very scientific thoughts to share with the class!  Well done!  The chidlren were all really good at drawing conclusions and explaining why their prediction was/was not right!

I'll look forward to seeing many of you on Wednesday at the parents meeting.  Also apologies sumdog club is Wednesday only.  Please return your child's slip if they would like to attend!

It's been another great week in year five that I have thoroughly enjoyed, thanks for all your hard work children, enjoy the weekend.

Homework is spelling, handwriting (optional if you have your expert pen license) and something from the grid!

I just hope we have have as much of a good time in year 6 as much as we have in year 5. As we have had a transition day all our fears hve been put to rest for year 6 and we feel it is time to pass year 5 on but we still have the memories. BUT ITS THE LAST DAY OF THE YEAR YAY .

    Hello,

For some additional grammar revision please do have a look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/english/spelling_grammar/word_types/read/1/

This is a good place to revise the terminology which Year 5 children need to be familiar with and is a challenge for our class as the grammar expectations have increased so substantially.  If you would like any additional grammar practise ideas for the summer break, please do get in touch.

    Many thanks,

    Mrs Sargeant

  • Sunday 2nd July (hsargeant.allsaints-pri.stockport)

Huge thanks to Year 5 children and parents for supporting the school fair on Friday evening - what a brilliant event!  Matthew and Mrs Sargeant enjoyed watching everyone get gooey in the Year 5 Bushtucker Trial.

Congratulations to our joint growth mindsets who were Archie and Scarlett for excellent relationships.  Raph and Jess made an excellent start on their Junior Athletes Healthy Menu so were our Star Writers.  We have really enjoyed Active Week including running, crazy golf and Forest Schools. Year 6 also planned a challenging obstacle course for us to take a risk and have a go at!

We look forward to more excitement this week as we continue with our designers topic.

    Mrs Sargeant

  • Monday 26th June (hsargeant.allsaints-pri.stockport)

What a few fantastic weeks we have coming up in Year 5!

This week huge congratulations goes to Azura for being our Star Writer for her excellent presentation in her Martin Luther King timeline - this was linked to our half termly Christian value of Peace.  Also congratulations to Charlie and Scarlett who are our Growth Mindsets of the week for great relationships and resilience in their learning.  Well done!  We have also started looking at famous architects and artists, starting with the amazing Antoni Gaudi.

During this week coming we have all sorts of activities planned for Active Week.  A little reminder that the children will be wearing sports clothing all week.  We will be ending the week with our school fair on Friday after school.  We hope you have a fantastic week.

    Mrs Sargeant and Mrs Eva

  • Friday 16th June (hsargeant.allsaints-pri.stockport)

Welcome back to the last half term of Year 5!

Many congratulations to our star writers this week: Lily, Harriet, Abi and Alfie - you really deserve your expert pens!  And also a big well done to Dylan for being our Star Artist.  This week we received our clay masks back from the kiln at Ladybrook Primary (very kindly they fired our masks) and the masks and the glazes look amazing!  Mrs Sargeant is truly impressed!!!

This week we have started on our architects and designers topic and we have a wonderful trip planned in a few weeks time too - the letter will be out on Monday.

Homework grids and the newsletter have been sent home today and you can also find them online.  Db homework will be online from this weekend too.

Many congratulations from the whole class to Scarlett for being our Growth Mindset of the week!

  • Friday 19th May (hsargeant.allsaints-pri.stockport)

This week we have had a great week.  We had an amazing visit from Bishop Cranmer and his wife, Hope, from Uganda.  Bishop Cranmer visited all the classes.  In our maths we have been learning about prime factors and investigating them.  Also during the week we went out side to  find some snails for our work on adaptation and evolution. Dylan was our growth mindset this week for resourcefulness and star writer was Edywn for great handwriting and desciption in his draft for our big write.

    Congratulations!

    Dylan and Andy

PS. Next Monday is set to be a very exciting day with a Stone Age workshop in the morning and some Stone Age forest schools in the afternoon.  Please remember your forest schools' clothing and footwear.

  • Friday 12th May (hsargeant.allsaints-pri.stockport)

This week in maths we have been learning about angles and shapes. We found out about right angles, acute angles, obtuse angles and reflex angles. And we learnt how to draw 3-shapes as nets. In topic we have been reading a book about Stone Age Boy. It is about a boy who falls into a pit and turns out to be in the stone age and he meets a girl called om. And we did a stone age timeline to show different events and we made our own cave paintings. We also got letters for a stone age workshop in school.  We also had a go at cracking our own clay and plaster of paris fossils to see how the shapes were imprinted.

The Growth Mindset of the week was Alexander and Azura was the Star Writer.

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

    Raph and Alexander

This week we have been learning about our topic the Stone Age amd have been following the story Stig of the DUmp.  We also have been starting to look at the book Stone Age Boy.  Earlier in the week, we began to look at angles such as: acute, obtuse, right angle and reflex.  As well as learning about converting fractions to decimals.  We began to draft and make our versions of cave paintings and we have made, decorated a funky Stone Age timeline.  We made Stone Age dictionaries of words that were used during the Stone Age.

Congratulations to Olivia and Harriet for jointly being growth mindset of the week and to Lily, our star writer.  Many thanks to Archie for making us something very tasty to eat on Friday!

  • Wednesday 3rd May (hsargeant.allsaints-pri.stockport)

Apologies for the delay in our class blog - we had a few difficulties accessing db during the first week back after Easter.  We hope you all received paper copies of the newsletter and the homework grid for the new half term.

Last week we had Mrs Morton's leaving assembly for her maternity leave.  Year 5 finished our swimming by having a Water Safety session.  We had to wear top and trousers and used woggles to be like life jackets so we could see what it would be like if we had to swim in a river or canal.  For our Stone Age topic we made fossils - using clay which was my favourite thing.

I was Growth Mindset of the week but we didn't have a Star Writer.
