Welcome to Year 6!
This milestone year blends key leadership responsibilities—such as buddying with our new Reception pupils—with an adventurous curriculum spanning historical reflections, hands-on design projects, and an unforgettable outdoor residential trip to Castleton. This is a year I adore… I’ve been in Year 6 for many years but things never stand still, always trying to improve and adapt…
We attempt to learn a new language this year as we move over to Spanish lessons. ¡Qué emocionante! – How exciting!
In Autumn we will lay down our expectations for the year ahead, the role models for the school!! We will explore class novels alongside World War themes, including Blitz, Star of Fear, Star of Hope, and Erika's Story.
Design & Technology: Practical textiles project creating waistcoats from scratch (what are we thinking??)
Science & RE: Units cover seeing light and classifying organisms, while Religious Education focuses on life journeys, pilgrimages, and Advent preparations.
History & Geography: Examines the impact of World War 1 and 2 on the people of Britain and investigates population changes. We will pause to remember and look at how wars have shaped our world. We will ponder the question, ‘Is there ever a winner in war?’
Nothing major or minor but for our music we have keyboard lessons where a specialist teacher comes in to deliver the musical lessons.
As we advance to Spring Term it is very much about Exploration & Scientific Discovery. For instance, Science & Geography: Focuses on evolution, inheritance, and changing circuits, paired with geography topics exploring global energy sources whilst Art & DT: Highlights Baroque painting and mixed media alongside constructing 3D structures.
Religious Education and World Views: Is a mature topic as we explore themes of loss, death, Christian hope, and the significance of Easter.
Summer Term: Fieldwork & Transitions
This is the term we take a splash with our swimming lessons and also attack our SATS!! English Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling (GPS): Two papers (Grammar/Punctuation questions and a short spelling test) An English Reading: One 60-minute comprehension paper and Mathematics: Three papers (Paper 1: Arithmetic, Papers 2 & 3: Reasoning). We also hope to visit Eyam to test out our mapping skills and also our historical enquiries and research in the historical plague village.
Transition & Celebrations: Preparing for high school and ensuring our pupils leave All Saints’ as legends—complete with a Year 6 production, our special leaver’s hoodies, a leavers' service, and plenty of memorable send-offs to mark the end of their primary school journey!
